Copilot in Word can show references to material in your document when it answers a question, and you can ask it to draft content with citations to referenced sources. To use those references responsibly, ask a focused question or identify the source file, open the cited passage, and confirm it supports the claim before you keep or share the result.
What Copilot’s citations in Word show
Microsoft says that after Copilot answers a prompt about your Word document, you can view citations pointing to where it pulled information from in that document. The references are a way to trace an answer back to source material—not a guarantee that the answer is complete or correct. Microsoft’s Word chat guidance describes viewing these references.
You can also ask Copilot to create new content with citations to referenced sources. In supported experiences, you may be able to type / and select a specific file as source material. Microsoft’s drafting guidance explains this workflow. The cited material may be in the open document or a file you specify, depending on the task and available features.

How to ask Copilot for cited content
1. Check that Copilot is available
Open a document in Word and look for the Copilot control or chat pane. Availability can depend on your Microsoft 365 subscription or Copilot license, organization settings, app version, platform, and feature rollout. If the control is missing, check your account and ask your organization’s Microsoft 365 administrator whether Copilot is enabled. The exact experience may differ across Word for Windows, Mac, the web, and iPad.
2. Ask a focused question or identify a source
For information in the open document, ask Copilot a direct question in the chat pane. For a new draft, state the purpose, audience, format, tone, and any constraints, then identify the source material. Where file selection is available, type / and choose the relevant file. Microsoft’s prompt guidance for Word offers further advice on making requests specific.

For example, you could ask: “Using the referenced project brief, draft a short summary for the leadership team. Add citations to the source material for each key claim, and flag anything the source does not support.” This is an example prompt, not a guaranteed command or promise that every claim will receive a citation.

After Copilot responds, look for citations or reference links in the response. Their placement can vary by interface. Follow a link to the relevant part of the document and read the cited passage in context. Microsoft’s reference-finding tutorial describes asking for specific information and following the link to the relevant section.

4. Verify the content before using it
- Confirm that the cited passage directly supports the sentence Copilot wrote.
- Read the surrounding text to make sure a qualification or exception has not been lost.
- Check that the source is the right document and version for your purpose.
- Verify facts, numbers, names, citations, policy statements, and sensitive details independently when accuracy matters.
- Edit or remove unsupported content before sharing the document.
Microsoft advises users to review Copilot-generated content and verify details before sharing. A citation makes checking easier; it does not transfer responsibility for the final document.
Copilot references are different from Word’s citation manager
Copilot’s references point to material it used in an answer or draft. Word’s traditional citation tools, found on the References tab, are a separate workflow: you enter source details and use them to create formatted citations and bibliographies. If you need formal academic references, do not assume Copilot’s links replace those formatted citations. You may need to verify the source and enter it through Word’s citation tools.

Why citation reporting may not show Word activity
Microsoft’s SharePoint page about Copilot citation insights says its reporting covers activity from specified Copilot Chat surfaces and excludes citations from in-app Copilot experiences in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. That is a limit on the reporting scope, not evidence that Word’s in-app references are unavailable. See Microsoft’s explanation of Copilot citations for that distinction.
