A Coolify server can start on a surprisingly small VPS, but the documented floor is not the same as a comfortable host for real applications. Coolify’s official baseline is deliberately modest; Docker image builds, databases, volumes and backups determine how much headroom you actually need. Use the baseline for a single test deployment, then size for the workloads you intend to run and verify the live documentation before ordering a server.
Official Coolify VPS requirements
The official requirements describe the resources needed to install and run Coolify itself. They do not guarantee that a busy build, database or group of applications will perform well on the same machine.

The 2-core, 2-GB and 10-GB figures are Coolify’s stated minimums. Treat them as an installation target for a very small environment, not as a production sizing promise.
How much VPS capacity to choose by workload
There is no single “Coolify VPS” size because the platform orchestrates whatever you deploy. The following planning ranges combine the official floor with commonly cited, non-official sizing guidance. They are starting points, not performance guarantees.

The ranges above come from third-party guides rather than Coolify’s official specification. A provider may advertise four “vCPUs” that share physical CPU time, while another may offer dedicated cores; compare that detail rather than relying on the number alone.
Why builds need more CPU and RAM than an idle app
Image builds are usually the largest short-lived resource spike. Compiling dependencies, unpacking layers and running build tools can consume several cores and substantially more memory than the finished container. A server that looks comfortable while serving a small site can become unresponsive during a concurrent build.

CPU pressure during builds
A single-CPU host is specifically described as a build bottleneck in Coolify’s v3 requirements material. With only one core, compilation and other services compete for the same scheduling time. Two cores are a practical starting point; four provide room for a build while the proxy, dashboard and applications remain responsive.

Memory pressure during builds
Build systems can briefly use more RAM than the resulting service. If the kernel runs out of memory, it may terminate a build or an application. Leave unused memory for the operating system and Docker rather than allocating every megabyte to containers.
Scheduling builds safely
- Build one image at a time on a small VPS instead of launching several builds concurrently.
- Use a remote build worker or a larger temporary builder when compilation is unusually heavy.
- Watch memory and CPU during a real build, not only while the application is idle.
- Increase vCPU or RAM before adding more services if builds regularly queue or fail.
Disk planning: why 10 GB is rarely enough
Ten gigabytes of free space is the official minimum to run Coolify, but Docker storage grows in several independent places. Images retain layers from previous deployments, volumes hold application and database data, and backups can accumulate until a disk is full.
Coolify’s older v3 requirements page calls for “30+ GB of storage for the images,” and the macOS Colima setup uses a 30-GB virtual-machine disk. Those figures explain the practical recommendation to begin with at least 30 GB, even when the current installation consumes less.

What consumes the disk
- Image layers: each deployment can download or build new layers; unused layers may remain until cleaned.
- Persistent volumes: databases, uploads and caches survive container replacement and can grow independently of image size.
- Build caches: cached package managers and intermediate layers speed later builds but occupy space.
- Backups: local snapshots and exported archives require capacity in addition to the live data.
- Logs: verbose or unrotated logs can silently consume the remaining free space.
Choosing a disk size
Use roughly 30 GB as a practical minimum for a small single-app VPS. Move toward 60 GB when several applications share the host, and 80 GB or more when production databases and backups live there. Prefer SSD storage for image extraction, builds and database latency. If backups are stored on the same VPS, size for the live data plus the retention window; otherwise a full disk can stop both the application and its backup job.
RAM requirements, swap and the 1-GB edge case
Coolify documents 2 GB RAM as the minimum. A third-party test reported that a 1-vCPU, 1-GB machine worked only after enabling swap. That makes 1 GB an emergency or low-cost experiment, not a sensible target for a server hosting real applications.
When swap helps
Swap can absorb a brief memory spike and prevent an immediate out-of-memory kill, but it uses disk and is far slower than RAM. It cannot turn a 1-GB VPS into a 2-GB machine for sustained load. If the system swaps during normal traffic or builds, add RAM rather than continually increasing swap.

What to monitor
- Available memory before and during deployments.
- Swap-in and swap-out activity, which indicates the system is under memory pressure.
- Container restarts caused by out-of-memory events.
- Database cache usage and connection count as applications are added.
CPU architecture and operating-system considerations
Coolify supports both amd64 and arm64. Confirm that every image you plan to deploy publishes a compatible architecture; an arm64 VPS cannot run an amd64-only image without emulation or a rebuilt image. Raspberry Pi OS installations specifically require ARM64 hardware and operating-system support.
Architecture is separate from capacity. An 8-GB ARM machine may have more memory than a 2-GB amd64 machine, but an application with native binary dependencies still needs an image built for the selected architecture. Check your base images, language runtimes and database images before committing to an ARM server.

The documentation notes that Coolify can run on an example machine with one CPU core, 512 MB RAM and 4 GB disk, but does not recommend that configuration. It also suggests starting with one CPU core and 1 GB RAM when cost is the overriding concern. These configurations leave little room for applications, image caches or upgrades and should be treated as temporary experiments.

For anything reachable by users, the official 2-GB memory floor is the safer baseline. If you must start below it, deploy one lightweight service, enable monitoring and plan a resize before adding a database or build workload.
A practical sizing procedure before you order a VPS
- List the services. Count the proxy, Coolify dashboard, application containers, workers, queues, databases and monitoring tools.
- Identify build behavior. Record whether images compile code, how often deployments occur and whether multiple builds can overlap.
- Estimate persistent data. Add current database and upload size, expected monthly growth and the amount retained in backups.
- Select a starting tier. Use the small-app range for one light service, the several-app range for a shared host, and the production range when databases and backups are on the same machine.
- Verify architecture. Choose amd64 or arm64 only after confirming that all required images support it.
- Reserve headroom. Keep memory and disk free for updates, temporary build layers and traffic peaks instead of sizing to today’s idle usage.
- Measure after deployment. Observe a real build, a normal traffic period and a backup cycle before deciding that the server is adequately sized.
Signs that the VPS is undersized

Capacity checks to perform after installation
- Confirm that free disk remains comfortably above the amount needed for the next image build and backup.
- Deploy a representative application and record peak CPU and RAM, not just averages.
- Run a backup and verify that its destination has enough capacity for the retention period.
- Test a rollback so old image layers and volumes are accounted for in disk planning.
- Set alerts for low disk space, high memory use and repeated container restarts.
Cloud VPS plans can generally be resized, but a resize may require a reboot or a migration depending on the provider. Plan maintenance before the server reaches a failure state; resizing a full disk or an out-of-memory host is more disruptive than doing it proactively.

The available material does not establish a change to Coolify’s official minimums in 2026. Documentation and installation requirements can change, and provider plans differ in how CPU, storage performance and architecture are presented. Check the current Coolify documentation and the exact VPS specification immediately before purchase, especially if you are relying on ARM64, local backups or a low-memory plan.
