A convertible tablet PC is a touchscreen computer designed to work as both a laptop and a tablet. In the narrower, common sense of “convertible,” the screen folds or rotates while remaining attached to the keyboard; a detachable 2-in-1 instead lets you remove the screen and use it separately.
What “convertible tablet PC” means
The phrase describes a portable personal computer with laptop and tablet uses. Microsoft’s Windows hardware documentation places both attached convertibles and detachable designs under the broader 2-in-1 category, describing them as notebook-style devices that can change to tablet use. Microsoft Learn’s 2-in-1 definition was last updated on August 24, 2021, so it is useful for the basic form-factor distinction rather than current buying guidance.
In everyday product descriptions, however, “convertible” often means the attached-screen design specifically. Lenovo describes that distinction in its convertible laptop explanation. Because manufacturers do not use “convertible,” “hybrid,” and “2-in-1” perfectly consistently, check how the screen and keyboard physically connect rather than relying on the label alone.
Convertible vs. detachable 2-in-1

What you can do with one
Tablet mode can suit tasks that benefit from touch or a screen you can hold, such as reading, browsing, note-taking, sketching, marking up PDFs, and using the device in meetings. For Windows device uses, see Microsoft’s desktop, laptop, and tablet overview.
For long typing sessions, heavy multitasking, or a preference for more ports, a conventional laptop form factor may be a better fit. The trade-off between an attached hinge and a removable screen also affects how the device feels as a tablet: an attached design keeps its keyboard with it, while a detachable can be used without that keyboard.

What to check before choosing one
- Screen mechanism: Confirm whether the screen folds on a hinge or detaches from the keyboard.
- Tablet handling: Consider whether you want the keyboard to remain attached while holding or using the device as a tablet.
- Keyboard and trackpad: Check what is available in laptop mode and whether a detachable model’s keyboard is included or sold separately.
- Touch and pen support: Do not assume every model supports a stylus or the same pen features. Check the exact device specifications and pen compatibility.
- Tablet-mode behavior: Windows device behavior and support can vary by model and software configuration. Microsoft’s tablet-mode guidance explains the Windows setting, but does not establish identical behavior for every convertible.
- Bundle contents: Verify whether a compatible pen or detachable keyboard comes with the device or must be purchased separately.
