To convert a video reliably, first identify its video and audio streams, then check what the destination accepts. Change only the container when the existing streams are compatible; otherwise transcode to suitable codecs and settings. The file extension alone cannot tell you whether a video will play.
What does “video format” mean?
A video file has a container and encoded streams. The container is the wrapper that organizes video and audio tracks and may also carry chapters or subtitles. The codecs determine how those audio and video streams are encoded or decoded. So MP4 describes a container, not a video codec: two MP4 files can contain video encoded in different ways.
HandBrake’s documentation describes MP4, MKV, and WebM as containers whose features and playback compatibility differ. A filename ending in .mp4, .mkv, or .webm does not, by itself, identify the codecs inside or guarantee support in a particular player. HandBrake: Container formats

Rewrapping versus transcoding
- Rewrapping, or remuxing: changes the container without encoding the audio or video streams again. It can be useful when the destination supports the existing streams but not their current wrapper.
- Transcoding: decodes and encodes one or more streams into a different format or with different settings. Use it when the destination does not support a source codec or another stream property must change. Re-encoding can affect quality and takes time.
Changing a filename extension is neither operation. It does not alter the container or the streams.

How do I convert a video to MP4?
First check the receiving device, app, or website’s current requirements. “MP4” alone is not a complete compatibility specification: the destination may also require a particular video codec, audio codec, resolution, frame rate, profile, or subtitle format. Adobe’s export guidance frames these choices around the intended playback platform. Adobe Premiere Pro: Export video
- Inspect the source. Note its container, video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, audio tracks, subtitles, and whether the frame rate is variable. Do not infer these details from the extension.
- Check the destination’s requirements. Use the device or service’s current guidance, including any limits on codecs, profiles, resolution, frame rate, audio, and subtitles.
- Choose the least disruptive change. If the existing streams are accepted and only the container is unsuitable, try a rewrap. If a stream or setting is incompatible, transcode to the required format.
- Set output properties deliberately. Retain the source resolution and frame rate unless the destination requires a change. Select compatible audio and subtitle options as well as the video settings.
- Check the finished file on the intended target. Confirm playback, audio-track selection, subtitle behavior, synchronization, and color.
MP4 is one common choice: HandBrake uses it for its general presets and recommends AAC audio for broader player compatibility. Container and preset behavior still matter, particularly for subtitles and additional audio tracks. HandBrake: Container formats and HandBrake: Official presets
Can I change MKV to MP4 without re-encoding?
Sometimes. If the video and audio streams inside the MKV are supported by the destination and can be carried in the intended MP4 file, rewrapping may change the container without another encoding generation. It will not fix an unsupported codec, incompatible profile, or other stream-level problem. Check the output rather than assuming the new extension makes it compatible.

Editing workflows can impose stricter requirements. Adobe says Premiere smart rendering can copy matching source data without recompression only when the source codec, frame size, frame rate, and bit rate exactly match the export settings. That requirement is specific to the documented smart-rendering workflow; it is not a general rule that every container change needs those exact matches. Adobe Premiere Pro: Smart rendering
How do I change a video format without losing quality?
There is no universal promise that conversion preserves quality. Rewrapping avoids re-encoding the streams, so it can avoid an additional generation of compression when the streams are already suitable. Transcoding creates encoded streams again and can change picture or sound quality. A smaller output generally involves a quality trade-off; a preset name is not proof that quality will be unchanged.
Before transcoding, check what the preset actually changes. HandBrake’s documented 720p30 preset, for example, can downscale a 1080p, 60 fps source to 720p and limit output to 30 fps. Some presets also encode stereo or omit discrete surround tracks, while others may pass through surround audio when possible. Settings worth checking
- Resolution and frame rate: Keep the source values unless the destination calls for a different size or rate.
- Video codec and profile: Match the target’s stated support rather than choosing by extension alone.
- Audio tracks: Decide whether to retain multiple tracks or surround audio, and check whether the preset changes them.
- Subtitles and chapters: Check that the chosen container and application preserve the features you need.
- Quality and file size: A smaller transcode is not automatically lossless. Choose settings for the goal, then inspect the output.
Why is my video not playing in this app?
Compatibility can fail even when the file has a familiar extension. The app may reject the container, a video or audio codec, a profile, resolution, frame rate, subtitle format, or a particular track. Compare the file’s actual properties with the app’s current requirements, then change only the property that is incompatible.

A practical diagnosis is to inspect the source, identify the exact target, and check whether a rewrap is sufficient before transcoding. After conversion, test the result in the actual app and verify audio, subtitles, synchronization, and color; a file opening successfully does not establish that every track or feature was retained.

Choose an encoding intended for a smaller file, but treat the result as a quality-and-size decision rather than a lossless reduction. A preset may reduce resolution or frame rate, alter audio, or balance encoding speed against picture quality and file size. Check those effects before starting, especially if the original has high resolution, a high frame rate, surround audio, multiple tracks, or subtitles.

Hardware encoding may be available for supported formats and systems, but it is not guaranteed. Adobe says Premiere’s hardware-encoding behavior depends on system configuration and can switch to software encoding when settings are unsupported. HandBrake’s hardware presets rely on dedicated media engines and may be unavailable when the required hardware or current drivers are not detected. Which converter should I use?
Format support depends on the specific application, version, build, platform, and encoding path. HandBrake says it uses FFmpeg’s libavformat and libavcodec and can generally open what FFmpeg can, in addition to disc sources. Its supported-source documentation also describes limitations, including some playlist and copy-protected disc cases. HandBrake: Supported source formats
FFmpeg’s reference distinguishes formats and codecs that can be encoded from those that can be decoded, and some support depends on external libraries. A long format list therefore does not mean every build can encode or decode every listed format. Check the documentation for the actual tool and build you plan to use. FFmpeg: General documentation
For a graphical workflow, a preset can reduce setup but still needs inspection. For more configurable workflows, FFmpeg’s documentation describes a broad range of formats and codecs, but the available paths depend on the build. For export as part of editing, follow the editor’s requirements and distinguish a delivery file from an editing-friendly intermediate; those serve different purposes.
What if the source is an analog tape?
A video format converter works on digital files; it does not capture an analog tape by itself. First digitize the tape with computer-based recording hardware and software, then convert the resulting digital file if its format needs to change. HandBrake gives Blackmagic Design Intensity as an example of capture hardware. This capture step applies to analog sources, not to ordinary digital video files. HandBrake: Supported source formats
