You can convert VHS tapes to DVD at home either with a VCR/DVD recorder or by capturing the tape on a computer and authoring a disc. The recorder route is simpler; the computer route takes more setup but gives you an editable digital file as well as a DVD. Both methods play the tape in real time, so a two-hour tape takes about two hours to transfer, before editing or disc creation.

What you need before you start

For either method, you need a working VCR and a tape that can be played safely. Check the tape and equipment first. Stop if the cassette is visibly damaged or playback seems unsafe; valuable or damaged material may need a higher-quality workflow or professional help. VHS tape has a finite life, and playback equipment is becoming harder to maintain, so consider making a separate digital preservation copy if the footage matters.

  • Direct recording: a VCR/DVD recorder that can play VHS and record to compatible blank discs.
  • Computer capture: a VCR, a compatible analog video capture device, a computer and capture software, plus DVD-authoring software and a way to burn the disc. Check device ports and current compatibility with your computer and software before buying; older product guides do not establish what works with today’s operating systems.

Which method should you choose?

Factor VCR/DVD recorder Computer capture
Setup Simpler if you already own a working recorder. More steps: connect, capture, author and burn.
Editing and file storage Limited; the Canadian Conservation Institute describes this route as difficult to edit. More flexible: you can choose storage and editing options and retain a digital file.
Cost and complexity Simple and low cost when suitable equipment is already available. More complex and may require additional hardware and software.
Best fit A straightforward DVD copy. A DVD plus a separate digital copy, or more control over the result.

The best choice depends on the equipment you have and what you want to do with the footage. For a preservation copy, the U.S. National Archives recommends high resolution, high bitrate, little or no compression, and open or non-proprietary formats; a DVD is more useful as an access copy than as the only copy to keep. See NARA’s video playback and digitization guidance.

Method 1: Copy with a VCR/DVD recorder

  1. Connect the recorder to a television or monitor so you can see its menus and check the transfer.
  2. Insert a compatible blank recordable DVD and set the recorder’s recording mode.
  3. Put the VHS tape in the VCR and cue it to the point where you want recording to begin.
  4. Start copying using the steps for your specific recorder. Panasonic’s copying instructions describe starting from the tape’s current position; menus and finalization behavior differ by model.
  5. Finalize the disc if required for playback in other compatible DVD players. Check the recorder manual: some recorders finalize automatically, while others offer a copy option that does not. Once finalized, a disc cannot accept more content.

Choose a recording mode

Longer modes fit more footage but trade away quality. In the Panasonic recorder example cited by the Canadian Conservation Institute, XP/HQ records about one hour per DVD-R, SP about two hours and LP about four hours. These are example-recorder figures, not a guarantee for every model. The CCI recommends XP for maximum quality and notes that SP trades quality for capacity. See the CCI’s VHS digitization bulletin.

Method 2: Capture the tape on a computer, then burn a DVD

  1. Check the VCR’s video and audio outputs and choose a capture device that accepts them and works with your computer and software.
  2. Connect the VCR’s video and audio outputs to the capture device, then connect the device to the computer. Use S-Video rather than composite video if both the VCR and capture device support it; otherwise, use a compatible composite connection. The actual ports determine which cables or adapters you need.
  3. Open the capture software, set the recording options, and start capturing as you play the tape. Watch the capture so you can catch connection or playback problems.
  4. After capture, edit if needed, then author and burn the video to a compatible DVD using DVD-authoring software and a disc burner. Keep the captured file separately if you want a digital copy.
  5. Finalize the disc if your burner or authoring workflow requires it for playback in other devices, and check the disc in a compatible player.

Capturing happens while the tape plays: a two-hour cassette therefore takes roughly two hours to record, before editing and disc authoring. The Roxio Easy VHS to DVD 3 guide documents the general USB capture and connection concepts, but it is a legacy guide, not proof of compatibility with current computers or software.

How to keep the transfer useful

  • Match the connections: confirm the capture device accepts the VCR’s video and audio outputs; S-Video can be used when both devices support it.
  • Watch the transfer: monitor playback and recording rather than leaving a long capture unchecked.
  • Keep two copies for important footage: retain a suitable digital preservation file in addition to the DVD access copy. NARA says a preservation copy should last “for years or decades”—guidance about planning for future copying, not a guaranteed lifespan for any disc or file.
  • Check playback: test the finished DVD in the kind of player where you expect to use it, and confirm finalization requirements in the recorder or authoring instructions.
