To convert a PNG file to JPG on Windows 11 without installing anything, open it in Paint, choose File > Save as > JPEG picture, then save a new copy. For most existing image files, Paint is the simplest option. The other methods below are for specific cases: a transparent image that needs a background, a graphic inside an Office document, a screenshot, or editing in Paint.NET.

Save the result as a separate file. JPEG cannot retain PNG transparency, and a different filename extension alone does not convert the image data.

Which PNG-to-JPG method should you use?

Method Best for New install? What it does
Paint An existing PNG image file No Saves a JPEG copy using Paint’s format choice.
Paint with a background A transparent PNG that should have a solid background in the JPG No Lets you prepare the appearance before saving a JPEG copy.
Office: Save as Picture A graphic embedded in Word, PowerPoint, or Excel No, if Office is already installed Exports the selected embedded graphic as JPEG.
Snipping Tool and Paint Visible on-screen content or a screenshot No Captures what is displayed, then saves the capture as JPEG in Paint.
Paint.NET People who already use it or need additional image editing Yes, unless already installed Supports opening PNG and saving JPEG.

These are five workflows, not five separate Windows-native converters. Paint is the general-purpose built-in option; the others apply to particular situations.

1. Convert an existing PNG with Paint

  1. Open the PNG in Paint. You can right-click the file in File Explorer, select Open with, then choose Paint.
  2. In Paint, select File > Save as > JPEG picture. The precise menu wording can vary as Paint is updated.
  3. Choose a folder and enter a new filename. Keep the .jpg extension that Paint supplies for the JPEG format.
  4. Select Save. Open the new file to confirm it looks as expected, and keep the original PNG if you may need it.

Microsoft says Paint can save work in formats including JPEG and PNG. Selecting JPEG in the save-format menu is what changes the file format; renaming image.png to image.jpg does not. See Microsoft’s Paint guidance.

2. Convert a transparent PNG after choosing its background

PNG can contain transparent areas, while JPEG is commonly used for photographs and does not preserve transparency. If a logo, icon, or other graphic has a transparent background, the JPEG needs visible pixels in those areas instead. Decide what background you want before saving the JPEG; do not assume the conversion will preserve transparent pixels or use a particular default color.

  1. Open the PNG in Paint and inspect the transparent areas.
  2. If they need a specific solid color behind the graphic, add or choose that background in Paint before saving. Check the canvas visually to ensure the result is right.
  3. Use File > Save as > JPEG picture, then save under a new name.

Keep the PNG if you need a transparent version for future use. Microsoft’s format guidance describes PNG as supporting transparent areas and JPEG as suited to pictures with many colors: Microsoft’s overview of image formats.

3. Export an image embedded in an Office document

Use this method when the picture is inside a Word, PowerPoint, or Excel document and you want a separate image file. It exports the selected embedded graphic; it is not a general converter for any PNG already saved on your PC.

  1. Right-click the graphic in the Office document.
  2. Select Save as Picture.
  3. Choose JPEG as the file type, select a destination, and save.

Microsoft documents this procedure for saving an illustration from Office and lists JPEG and PNG among the available formats. Menu details may differ by Office app or version. See Microsoft’s instructions for saving a graphic as a separate file.

4. Save a screenshot as JPG with Snipping Tool and Paint

Choose this workflow when you need a picture of what is currently visible on screen, rather than a format conversion that preserves the original PNG’s pixels. A screenshot captures displayed content, so it may not match the source file’s exact dimensions or image data.

  1. Open Snipping Tool from the Windows Start menu.
  2. Start a snip and select the area to capture.
  3. Use Snipping Tool’s option to open or edit the capture in Paint.
  4. In Paint, choose File > Save as > JPEG picture, then save to the desired folder.

Microsoft describes saving a snip and opening it in Paint in its Snipping Tool guidance. Paint’s save-format menu provides the JPEG choice.

5. Use Paint.NET if you already need an image editor

Paint.NET is a third-party desktop editor whose documentation lists PNG and JPEG support and compatibility with Windows 10 and Windows 11. It can be useful if you already use it for editing, but you do not need to install it for a basic PNG-to-JPG conversion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the PNG in Paint.NET.
  2. Choose its save or export command and select JPEG as the format.
  3. Choose a destination and filename, then save the JPEG copy.

For current format and system details, see the Paint.NET supported file types documentation. The exact interface steps and licensing terms can change; consult the version you install.

Check the JPG and avoid common mistakes

  • Confirm the format in the save dialog. A filename ending in .jpg is not proof of conversion; select JPEG in the application’s format option.
  • Look at transparent areas. They cannot remain transparent in a JPEG, so make sure the resulting background is acceptable.
  • Keep a PNG copy when its qualities matter. PNG may preserve transparency and lossless image data that you do not want to discard.
  • Do not treat Photos as a confirmed export route. Microsoft documents Photos support for JPEG and PNG, but that alone does not establish a workflow for exporting an arbitrary PNG as a chosen JPEG format.
  • Be cautious with online converters. A web service would require uploading the image, and its privacy or handling practices depend on that specific service. The local Paint workflow avoids that upload.
