To use Voice Control in iOS 26, turn it on at Settings > Accessibility > Voice Control, complete the one-time download, then speak commands to navigate, select controls, and enter text. Once that download is complete, Voice Control works without an internet connection.
Set up Voice Control on iPhone
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Voice Control.
- Tap Set Up Voice Control, then tap Continue to start the download. Apple recommends using Wi-Fi for this first-time setup.
- When setup is complete, look for the Voice Control status icon. You can then use spoken commands, including while offline.
Voice Control is an iPhone accessibility feature; no additional product is required. Its settings include language, commands, vocabulary, visual confirmation, sound, hints, overlays, and—on Face ID iPhones—Attention Aware. Custom vocabulary is not supported in every Voice Control language. Apple’s iOS 26 Voice Control guide describes the available settings.
Navigate and activate controls with spoken commands
Speak a command to operate the phone. Examples include “Open Control Center,” “Go home,” “Tap item name,” and “Turn up volume.” To see commands that apply to the current screen or task, say “Show commands.” You can also browse the list at Settings > Accessibility > Voice Control > Commands; available commands can vary by app and task.

When Voice Control cannot identify a control
- Say “Show names” to display item labels, then speak the label you want.
- Say “Show numbers” to number onscreen targets, then speak the number for the target.
- Say “Show grid” and speak a grid number to target a location. If you need greater precision, speak a cell number to zoom into a smaller grid.
Dismiss an overlay by saying “Hide names,” “Hide numbers,” or “Hide grid,” as appropriate.

Pause Voice Control and turn it on quickly
Say “Stop listening” to pause voice input, and “Start listening” to resume it. For quicker access after setup, add Voice Control to Control Center or configure it as an Accessibility Shortcut. You can also ask Siri to turn Voice Control on.
Choose the right mode to enter text
In a text field, Voice Control provides distinct modes for speaking text, spelling characters, or issuing commands. Dictation mode is on by default.

- Dictation mode: Speak words that you want entered as text.
- Spelling mode: Enter characters individually. This can help with passwords and web addresses, but it is not available in every supported Voice Control language.
- Command mode: Voice Control responds to commands only, so other speech is not entered as text.
While Voice Control is on, it handles text dictation; standard iOS Dictation is unavailable. If your goal is ordinary dictation rather than hands-free control of the phone, distinguish that feature from Voice Control.

In the Voice Control command settings, you can review commands and enable or disable them. Apple also documents options to require confirmation for individual actions and to create custom commands. A custom command can insert text, perform a custom gesture, run a Shortcut, or play back a recorded series of commands. You can make it available in any app or limit it to selected apps. Menu wording can differ across Apple’s support directions: its iOS 26 guide uses Commands, while older directions use Customise Commands. Follow the labels displayed on your iOS 26 device.
Check language and region availability
Voice Control is not available in every language or region. Apple’s current feature-availability page is labeled for iOS 27, so its full list should not be treated as a confirmed iOS 26 list. Check the current availability information for your system language and region before relying on the feature.

Do you need a headset?
No. A headset is optional; you can use Voice Control without buying additional hardware. If you choose AirPods or a third-party headset, Apple warns that headset use affects audio quality and can affect features such as Siri announcements and Share Audio with AirPods.
