Start with Alan Wake 2 if you want the closest follow-up to Control’s reality-bending storytelling and Remedy atmosphere. Choose Alan Wake Remastered to explore the earlier paranatural story, Quantum Break for time powers and cinematic action, or Max Payne for Remedy’s character-driven third-person shooting without the same supernatural exploration.

None of these games reproduces Control exactly. The useful comparison is about what you want to preserve: uncanny fiction, supernatural combat, horror, exploratory spaces, or Remedy’s particular way of delivering a story.

Why Control is a difficult game to replace

Control is a supernatural third-person action-adventure built around Jesse Faden, the newly appointed Director of the Federal Bureau of Control. Her workplace is the Oldest House, a concrete New York skyscraper whose interior shifts, hides secrets and contains dangerous phenomena. The setting is not just scenery: changing rooms, altered architecture and unexplained objects make the building itself part of the mystery.

Jesse fights with a shape-shifting Service Weapon, telekinetic abilities and modifiable loadouts. She can use the environment as a weapon, respond to reactive spaces, pursue side missions and confront bosses while trying to understand what happened inside the Bureau. The result is a particular combination of forceful third-person action, investigation and institutional weirdness.

CONTROL Ultimate Edition - PlayStation 5
  • Uncover the mysteries - Can you handle the bureau’s dark secrets? Unfold an epic supernatural struggle, filled with unexpected characters and bizarre events, as you search for your missing brother, and discover the truth that has brought you here.
  • Everything is your weapon - Unleash destruction through transforming weaponry and telekinetic powers. Discover new ways to annihilate your enemies as you harness powerful abilities to turn everything around you into a lethal weapon.
  • Explore a hidden world - Delve deep into the ominous expanses of a secretive government agency. Explore the Bureau’s shifting environments only to discover that there is always more than meets the eye…
  • Fight for control - Battle a relentless enemy through exciting missions and challenging boss fights to earn powerful upgrades that maximize abilities and customize your weaponry.

A critic’s description of the game as Lynchian and The X-Files-like is a useful way to communicate its mood, but it is interpretation rather than an official genre label. What is concrete is the combination of supernatural powers, a mutable building, investigative storytelling and combat that encourages improvisation.

Quick comparison: which game should you choose?

Game Choose it when you want What it shares with Control Main difference to expect
Alan Wake 2 The closest Remedy follow-up for surreal narrative and atmosphere Reality-bending fiction, paranormal threats and a strong sense of place It is described as narrative-driven horror rather than supernatural action-adventure, so the mood is more frightening and the combat/exploration loop is different
Alan Wake Remastered An earlier story in the same broad paranatural territory A writer, altered reality and a threat that changes the world around the characters Its Bright Falls story and light-based combat are not established as mechanically close to Control
Quantum Break Time powers, action and a highly cinematic presentation Reality distortion, a Remedy-led story and supernatural-style abilities Its narrative includes live-action television episodes, a substantial presentation change from Control
Max Payne Cinematic third-person shooting and character-focused drama Remedy’s action storytelling and a reality-fraying sensibility It is a weaker match for paranormal setting, shifting-space exploration and supernatural powers

Alan Wake 2: the best first choice for surreal Remedy storytelling

Why it is the closest thematic follow-up

Alan Wake 2 is the strongest recommendation when the part of Control you miss most is the unsettling fiction rather than the exact gunplay. It is a narrative-driven horror game that moves between two realities. Saga Anderson investigates ritualistic murders while Alan Wake attempts to escape the Dark Place. Those parallel threads let the game treat reality as unstable and subjective, which makes it a natural next step for a player drawn to the Oldest House’s mysteries.

The connection is therefore about tone, ideas and storytelling ambition. Both games ask you to interpret strange events while the world refuses to behave normally. Both place the player inside a carefully authored supernatural situation rather than a conventional military or fantasy adventure.

What changes from Control

Do not buy Alan Wake 2 expecting Jesse’s telekinetic combat, the Service Weapon or the Oldest House’s exploratory structure. The available description characterizes it as horror, while Control is characterized as supernatural action-adventure. That distinction affects pacing, tension and the way you approach encounters. Alan Wake 2 is the pick for stronger horror emphasis and narrative investigation, not a one-for-one mechanical sequel.

The two-reality structure also changes how the story is presented. You follow Saga and Alan as separate protagonists with different situations and goals, rather than a single director moving through one institutional complex. If you prefer mysteries that unfold through character viewpoints and atmosphere, that is an advantage. If you mainly want free-form combat and environmental improvisation, the fit is less direct.

Who should start here?

  • Players who want the most surreal, story-led follow-up in this group.
  • Players comfortable with a more explicit horror identity than Control has.
  • Readers interested in Remedy’s connected paranatural storytelling space.

Alan Wake Remastered: the earlier paranatural story

What it offers

Alan Wake Remastered follows a writer caught in a paranatural event in Bright Falls. His writing affects reality, and he uses light against a spreading Dark Presence. That premise makes it a sensible choice when you want to understand the earlier story world associated with Remedy’s supernatural fiction, particularly if you plan to play Alan Wake 2 afterward.

The appeal is chronological and thematic rather than mechanical. You get a preceding story about authorship, reality and a hostile force, with a setting that becomes increasingly unreliable. It can also work after Alan Wake 2 if you prefer to revisit the earlier chapter once you know where the larger narrative goes.

Control Ultimate Edition - PlayStation 4
  • Control Ultimate Edition contains the main game and all previously released expansions ("The Foundation" and "Awe") in one great value package
  • Can you handle The Bureau's dark secrets? Unfold an epic supernatural struggle, filled with unexpected characters and bizarre events, as you search for your missing brother, and discover the truth that has brought you here.
  • Unleash destruction through transforming weaponry and telekinetic powers. Discover new ways to annihilate your enemies as you harness powerful abilities to turn everything around you into a lethal weapon
  • Delve deep into the ominous expanses of a secretive government agency. Explore The Bureau's shifting environments only to discover that there is always more than meets the eye
  • Battle a relentless enemy through exciting missions and challenging boss fights to earn powerful upgrades that maximize abilities and customize your weaponry

How close is the gameplay?

The documented descriptions do not establish that Alan Wake Remastered plays like Control. Its defining combat idea is using light against the Dark Presence, not Jesse’s combination of telekinesis, a transforming weapon and environmental objects. Bright Falls is also a different kind of setting from the Oldest House. Expect a preceding Remedy story with paranormal action, not the same exploration loop.

When it is the right choice

  • You want an earlier entry before committing to the newer story.
  • You are more interested in the writer-and-reality premise than in ability-heavy combat.
  • You want a bridge into the broader Alan Wake narrative rather than a direct Control substitute.

Quantum Break: choose time powers and cinematic action

The central hook

Quantum Break takes place in a world where time is fracturing. Its protagonist, Jack Joyce, uses time-warping powers while navigating an action story built around that breakdown. If the most satisfying part of Control was having an extraordinary ability set and watching reality become unreliable, this is the alternative that most directly replaces paranormal powers with a different kind of physics-defying power.

The game is also notably cinematic. Its narrative integrates a live-action television show with the interactive sections. That format is not a minor bonus feature; it changes how the story is delivered and how you move between gameplay and filmed episodes.

What it shares and what it does not

Both games come from Remedy and place a capable protagonist inside a reality crisis. Both use extraordinary abilities as a central part of action. The similarity ends sooner than it does with the atmosphere of Alan Wake 2: time fracture is a science-fiction premise, and the live-action structure gives the experience a different rhythm from Jesse’s exploration of an impossible office building.

There is no basis to assume that Quantum Break has the same shifting-space exploration or side-quest structure as Control. Select it for powers, action and presentation, not because it reproduces the Oldest House.

Who will enjoy it most?

  • Players who value powers and set-piece action over sustained horror.
  • Players curious about a hybrid game-and-television narrative.
  • Players who want reality distortion presented through time rather than occult phenomena.

Max Payne: the shooting-focused option

Why it belongs in the comparison

Max Payne is the oldest and least direct match here, but it remains relevant if what you want is Remedy’s cinematic third-person shooting and character-driven storytelling. Its action has a reality-fraying sensibility, yet its setting is not built around the paranormal institution, shifting architecture and supernatural abilities that define Control.

This makes it a useful recommendation for a different reason: it isolates the studio’s action-storytelling identity from the supernatural exploration. You can choose it when gunplay, dramatic presentation and a troubled protagonist matter more than investigating impossible phenomena.

Why it is a weaker fit for Control fans

The available characterization does not support calling Max Payne a supernatural exploration game. It is therefore the wrong choice if your favorite memories are throwing objects with telekinesis, opening hidden areas in the Oldest House or piecing together Bureau documents and altered-world events.

Choose it as a Remedy action lineage pick, not as the next chapter of Control’s paranormal setting.

Compare the games by the feature you miss

Combat and abilities

Control combines a shape-shifting Service Weapon, telekinetic powers, environmental attacks and customizable loadouts. That mix lets Jesse change tactics during a fight instead of relying on one fixed weapon type.

Quantum Break is the clearest alternative if powers are your priority, but its abilities manipulate time rather than objects. Alan Wake Remastered centers its paranormal combat on light. Alan Wake 2 is documented primarily as narrative-driven horror, so its attraction is not an equivalent combat sandbox. Max Payne is the straightforward choice for cinematic shooting without the same supernatural toolset.

Horror and tension

Alan Wake 2 is the only title in this group explicitly characterized as narrative-driven horror, making it the recommendation for readers who want a more intense fear response and a darker investigative mood.

Control is framed as supernatural action-adventure. It can be unsettling because of the Oldest House and its phenomena, but its core promise is powered action and discovery. Alan Wake Remastered also uses a threatening paranatural force, while Quantum Break emphasizes a time crisis and Max Payne emphasizes cinematic crime-action drama.

Exploration and spaces

The Oldest House is the baseline: a concrete skyscraper whose interior shifts and conceals secrets. Its architecture, side missions and reactive environments are central to the experience.

Control (Ultimate Edition)
  • Discover the secrets
  • Utilize your surroundings as weapons
  • Venture into a concealed realm
  • Strive for dominance

None of the supplied descriptions establishes that the other games reproduce this structure. Bright Falls, the two realities of Alan Wake 2, the time-fractured world of Quantum Break and the setting of Max Payne should be treated as distinct spaces. If your deciding feature is wandering through an impossible building and uncovering its rules, no alternative here is a documented replacement for that exact design.

Narrative delivery

Control delivers its mystery through Jesse’s investigation, Bureau material, missions and encounters in the Oldest House. Alan Wake 2 alternates between Saga Anderson and Alan Wake in two realities. Alan Wake Remastered follows a writer whose fiction affects reality. Quantum Break interleaves interactive play with live-action television episodes. Max Payne is the most conventional presentation in this set, with its emphasis on cinematic action and character-driven storytelling.

Pick based on the format you prefer, not only the setting. A player who dislikes live-action interruptions should know that Quantum Break’s structure is a major difference. A player who enjoys switching viewpoints may find Alan Wake 2 especially appealing.

Which version of Control should you play first?

If you have not played Control, the official game site describes Control Ultimate Edition as containing the full game and both released expansions: The Foundation and AWE. That is the complete package to look for when you want the main story plus its additional chapters.

The same official listing covers PC storefronts, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch. Storefront catalogs, editions, formats, regional availability and prices can change, so check the live listing for your specific system and country before purchasing. Do not assume that a version shown on one platform is offered under identical terms elsewhere.

How to plan your play order

If you want the strongest atmospheric progression

  1. Play Control, including the main campaign and the expansions in Ultimate Edition if available for your system.
  2. Continue with Alan Wake 2 for a more explicit horror story that explores related reality-bending ideas.
  3. Play Alan Wake Remastered when you want the earlier Bright Falls chapter or additional context for Alan’s story.

If you want to test the studio’s other action ideas

  1. Play Control for supernatural abilities and environmental combat.
  2. Move to Quantum Break for time powers and the live-action format.
  3. Try Max Payne for the cinematic shooting lineage without paranormal exploration.

These orders are preference-based rather than required. The important distinction is whether you are following a story thread or sampling different forms of Remedy action.

Common expectations that lead to disappointment

  • Expecting identical combat: only Control is documented here with the specific combination of telekinesis, a transforming Service Weapon, environmental use and modifiable loadouts.
  • Expecting every game to be horror: Alan Wake 2 is explicitly described as horror; Control is described as supernatural action-adventure, while Quantum Break and Max Payne have different priorities.
  • Expecting the same exploration structure: the Oldest House’s shifting architecture is a defining feature of Control, and no supplied description confirms that another title duplicates it.
  • Ignoring presentation differences: Quantum Break includes live-action television episodes, and Alan Wake 2 alternates between two realities and protagonists.
  • Assuming platform availability: check the current store listing for your hardware and region because catalogs and formats can change.

The bottom line

Alan Wake 2 is the best first recommendation for most players asking what to play after Control, provided they want stronger horror and a narrative-led experience rather than the same combat loop. Alan Wake Remastered is the earlier-story choice, Quantum Break is the time-power and cinematic-action choice, and Max Payne is the shooting-focused choice. Start by identifying which part of Control you want to keep; the right follow-up depends on that answer.
