Control and Inception both make impossible spaces feel coherent by giving them recognizable rules, but they start from opposite directions. Control begins with the familiar order of a government office and lets a paranormal force corrupt it. Inception begins with spaces deliberately designed inside dreams, using architecture to express memory, perception and the mind’s creative power. Their buildings look similarly uncanny at times, yet one is about institutional reality being invaded while the other is about reality becoming impossible to verify.
The essential difference
| Question | Control | Inception |
|---|---|---|
| What is the starting point? | A bureaucratic institution with recognizable offices, corridors and routines. | A dream environment constructed by characters for a specific mental operation. |
| What destabilizes space? | The Hiss, an otherworldly force that travels between dimensions and corrupts matter unpredictably. | The choices, memories and perceptions of people who build or inhabit dreams. |
| What does architecture represent? | The fragility of rational institutions when an external, incomprehensible force enters them. | The mind’s ability to invent, distort and emotionally charge the world it experiences. |
| How is reality treated? | The Oldest House is a physical institutional setting whose order is disrupted by the paranormal. | The film deliberately withholds a final guarantee that its ending is either a dream or reality. |
This is not a comparison of equivalent fictional systems. The Oldest House and the dream levels do not obey the same metaphysics, and neither work is presented as sharing a universe with the other. The useful comparison is formal: both make spatial rules carry story meaning.
Control starts with bureaucratic familiarity
The Oldest House as an office before it becomes a nightmare
Control places its impossible events inside the Federal Bureau of Control’s headquarters, the Oldest House. Its visual direction was explicitly informed by brutalist architecture, according to game director Mikael Kasurinen and narrative designer Brooke Maggs in a 2019 interview. Brutalism gives the building heavy masses, severe geometry, exposed structural logic and a sense of institutional permanence.
That design is important because the building does not begin as a fantasy castle. It resembles the kind of government workplace a player can recognize: reception areas, desk clusters, meeting rooms, archives, laboratories and long corridors organized for routine. The familiarity establishes a stable expectation before the game breaks it.

Reported architectural references
A 2019 architectural analysis by Game Developer identifies reported references in the Oldest House, including Kevin Roche’s interiors at the John Deere headquarters and Marcel Breuer’s Met Breuer. These are best understood as influences identified by the analysis, not as a complete official bibliography of the game’s production design.
The references help explain why the Oldest House feels both real and displaced. Its spaces draw on actual twentieth-century institutional architecture, but the game rearranges those qualities into a building whose interior scale and continuity cannot be trusted. Repeated desks and regimented rooms suggest a system designed to make work predictable. The same repetition becomes disturbing when rooms reconfigure, corridors extend beyond expectation or a familiar department no longer leads where it should.
Why routine makes the impossible more frightening
The unsettling effect comes from violation rather than from total unfamiliarity. A completely alien landscape has no ordinary standard to break. In the Oldest House, the player first reads walls, doors, signage and furniture as evidence of an intelligible workplace. When those cues stop agreeing with one another, the building appears to be betraying a known system.

This makes the architecture an active source of tension. The question is not simply “What monster is here?” but “Why does a place built for administration behave like a living, hostile thing?” Bureaucratic order becomes the baseline against which every spatial impossibility is measured.
The Hiss turns institutional order into unstable matter
An external force, not a clever architectural trick
Remedy’s official Control material describes the Hiss through senior concept artist Oliver Ödmark as “an unknown otherworldly entity” and “a bodiless force beyond human comprehension” that travels between dimensions through resonance. Ödmark says it consumes what it encounters, corrupts matter unpredictably, takes hold of humans and uses them as tools. He also says that people cannot withstand the intrusion for long without protection.
That description establishes the Hiss as the agent behind the setting’s physical and human instability. The altered rooms are not merely visual puzzles arranged for the player’s amusement. They are symptoms of an intrusion that reaches across dimensions and changes the material world. Because the force is described as beyond human comprehension, the building’s transformations do not resolve into a fully explainable architectural system.

Space as evidence of contamination
In this framework, the Oldest House remains an institution even while it is being corrupted. Its departments, protocols and office layouts continue to matter because they show what the Hiss is disrupting. A floating employee, a hostile resonance event or a corridor that refuses ordinary geometry carries more weight when it appears inside a recognizable workplace.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe result is a particular kind of surrealism: the ordinary is not replaced but contaminated. Architecture records the conflict between an organization that depends on classification and a force that makes classification unreliable.
Inception treats architecture as dream construction
Spaces are designed by people inside the story
In Inception, architecture does not primarily begin as an inherited institution. Dreamers and architects deliberately construct environments for a job. Christopher Nolan told WIRED in 2010 that he wanted the dreams to reflect “the infinite potential of the human mind.” He also said, “I think there’s a narrative component to architecture that’s kind of fascinating.”
Those comments describe a different relationship between space and story from the one in Control. The dream environment is an expression of mental activity. Its streets, hotels, elevators and fortresses can be tactical arrangements, emotional landscapes or traps produced by a character’s memories. The fact that someone designed the space does not make it safe; it makes the space psychologically legible in a way the Oldest House often is not.
Mazes make perception part of the plot
The maze is the clearest architectural form in the film. An architect must create a path that can be navigated by the team but remains difficult for the dream’s projections to detect. The maze therefore performs several jobs at once: it is a practical security device, a visual demonstration of constructed space and a metaphor for a mind trying to contain itself.

Architecture carries emotional information
Dream levels externalize private material. A location can be assembled for a mission yet remain shaped by grief, guilt or obsession. The architecture tells the audience that physical distance and psychological distance are linked: moving through a building can mean moving deeper into a person’s memories or defenses.
Because the characters intentionally create these environments, their imperfections matter. A dream may contain details that reveal its maker, and an intruder can exploit those details. The environment is thus both a stage and a record of mental experience.
How each work makes surreal space feel real
1. Establish a readable baseline
Control uses office routines, institutional signage and brutalist massing. Inception uses recognizable cities, hotels, roads and domestic interiors before bending their rules. In both cases, the audience receives enough ordinary information to build a mental map.

The Oldest House violates expectations about a building’s continuity, scale and material stability. Dream levels violate expectations about gravity, time, spatial distance and the boundary between memory and environment. The worlds remain comprehensible because the violations occur against a previously established norm.
3. Give the impossible consequences
In Control, altered matter and possessed people create immediate danger; the Hiss is not an abstract visual effect. In Inception, a change in one dream layer affects timing, balance or events in another layer. Surreal architecture feels real when characters must make decisions under its rules and suffer consequences when they misread them.
4. Tie spatial change to a source of agency
The Hiss supplies the destabilizing agency in Control. Its intrusion is hostile and not fully knowable. In Inception, agency is distributed among architects, dreamers, projections and memories. The first world is invaded; the second is authored, defended and revised from within.

Reality means different things in the two works
Control: a physical world under paranormal pressure
The Oldest House is presented as a place that exists within the game’s institutional reality. Its abnormality does not depend on a late revelation that the entire setting is imaginary. The uncertainty concerns what the building can become and how far the Hiss has penetrated it.
That distinction lets the game preserve investigative momentum. Players can document events, secure areas and restore parts of the institution even though its architecture remains unstable. Reality is damaged but still treated as something that can be entered, measured and defended.
Inception: uncertainty as the final condition
Inception makes the status of reality itself the unresolved question. Nolan told WIRED, “The film does not specify one way or the other” when discussing whether the ending is a dream or reality. He also said he had his own answer but declined to disclose it in that interview.
Therefore, the ending should not be described as creator-confirmed proof of either interpretation. The ambiguity is part of the film’s design. The spinning top, the characters’ behavior and the architecture of the final scene invite competing readings, but none is established as Nolan’s official solution by that statement.

What the Oldest House says about institutions
The Oldest House turns the language of administration into horror. Ordered rooms imply that knowledge can be filed, personnel can be managed and unusual events can be contained by procedure. The Hiss demonstrates the limits of those assumptions. A force that crosses dimensions and corrupts matter cannot be made ordinary simply by assigning it a department or a form.
The building’s brutalist appearance reinforces that tension. Heavy concrete-like forms suggest durability, yet the interior’s instability shows that institutional permanence is an aspiration rather than a guarantee.

What dream architecture says about consciousness
Inception treats architecture as an extension of thought. A constructed street can conceal an intention; a maze can represent defensive intelligence; a collapsing structure can expose the failure of control. The film’s spaces are meaningful because they are made by minds, carry memories and respond to attention.
That is why the film’s reality question cannot be solved only by looking for visual glitches. The deeper issue is whether a world’s emotional and perceptual consequences are enough to make it real to the person experiencing it.
A sequel comparison: Control Resonant’s “Strange York”
Control Resonant offers a later example of Remedy’s continued use of ordinary environments as a baseline, but it should not be treated as evidence about the original game’s specific level design or about Inception. In a September 2026 PlayStation.Blog interview, Remedy art team member Elmeri Raitanen said that the Federal Bureau of Control “at face value, looks like a believable office space” and that establishing this baseline makes an otherworldly event feel impactful.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The same interview quotes a Remedy developer identified as Sergey describing the sequel’s New York as “not meant to be a one to one representation of real life” but rather “what we call ‘Strange York,’ an iconic movie-like retro version.” The developers also discussed a gravity-warped apartment environment. These comments show a design continuity—recognizable reality first, paranormal distortion second—without making the sequel’s fictionalized New York interchangeable with the Oldest House or with the dream cities of Inception.
Which work uses architecture more directly?
The answer depends on what “use” means. Inception makes architecture an explicit subject: characters design spaces, explain their construction and use mazes as operational tools. Nolan’s comments directly frame architecture as narratively meaningful. If the question is about architecture as a conscious act of creation, Inception is more direct.
Control uses architecture more as an atmosphere and an antagonist’s footprint. The game’s office layouts, brutalist references and repeated institutional forms establish a system whose corruption can be felt before it is understood. If the question is about how buildings can make the familiar uncanny, Control is more forceful.
Neither approach is simply more realistic. Control makes an impossible building credible by embedding it in bureaucratic material culture. Inception makes impossible buildings credible by giving them designers, purposes and psychological stakes.

A practical way to analyze a scene from either work
- Identify the baseline. List the ordinary architectural cues: offices, desks, streets, hotel rooms, stairways, signage or domestic furniture.
- Name the broken rule. Decide whether the scene changes scale, gravity, continuity, time, material behavior or the boundary between memory and place.
- Find the source of the change. In Control, ask how the Hiss or another paranormal event is affecting matter and people. In Inception, ask which character’s design, memory or projection is shaping the environment.
- Track the consequence. Note what characters can no longer assume and what practical danger follows from the spatial distortion.
- Read the building thematically. A corrupted office may point to institutional limits; a maze or collapsing dream may reveal mental conflict, control or uncertainty.
- Separate evidence from interpretation. Treat reported architectural influences and creator statements as support for a reading, not as proof that every visual detail has one official meaning.
Final comparison
Control and Inception both understand that surrealism works best when it has an order the audience can recognize before that order fails. Control makes the failure institutional: a brutalist office complex becomes the visible site of an interdimensional contamination. Inception makes the order intentional and mental: architects build dream spaces whose geometry carries tactical and emotional information.
Their architecture therefore answers different questions. Control asks what happens when a rational organization confronts a force outside its categories. Inception asks whether a world designed by the mind can be separated cleanly from reality once perception, memory and feeling have made it convincing.
