Control Resonant continues the story of the Faden siblings, but changes both its lead character and its setting: Dylan is playable, Jesse is missing, and a paranatural crisis is warping Manhattan. The first Control game’s Oldest House story explains how the siblings reached this point. Remedy also officially places Control and Alan Wake in the same connected universe, though that does not make every crossover theory canon or every game required preparation.

How is Control Resonant connected to Control?

Control Resonant is a continuation of Control through the story of Jesse and Dylan Faden. The first game establishes their family history and the crisis at the Federal Bureau of Control (FBC) headquarters, the Oldest House. In the sequel, Dylan becomes the sole playable character, wakes from a coma years after that crisis, and sets out in a Manhattan distorted by paranatural forces. Jesse is missing, but remains central to the siblings’ shared story.

That is the clearest bridge between the games: the Oldest House explains Dylan’s past, while the sequel follows what happens after he wakes. The setting changes from the FBC’s shifting headquarters to a transformed city, but the story carries forward familiar threats, characters, and echoes of earlier events.

What happened to Dylan in the Oldest House?

Control begins with Jesse entering the Oldest House to find her brother. The FBC had taken Dylan as a child and raised him in an institution. During the Hiss crisis at headquarters, the Hiss took control of him. Jesse stopped him and cleansed him, but Dylan then fell into a coma.

Wield the Aberrant in its many deadly forms. Deliver bone-crunching blows with a two-handed hammer and flow seamlessly into the swift precision of dual-wielded blades as this paranatural weapon morphs on demand to meet each new challenge.
  • SHARED LEGACY. NEW THREAT: FBC Director Jesse Faden's lockdown is no longer holding. A paranatural catastrophe has spilled beyond the Oldest House and onto the streets of Manhattan, and the Bureau's grip on containment is failing. Jesse Faden walked into the Oldest House to confront the threat within. Now Dylan must walk out of it to contain the threat beyond.

Remedy’s account of the sequel’s premise picks up years later: Dylan wakes, and Jesse is missing. That sequence gives returning players a direct narrative reason to care about the events of the first game without requiring the sequel to begin in the same building. The sibling relationship is not just background; Remedy says the Fadens’ arcs revolve around one another.

The Oldest House matters because it is where the FBC operates and where the events that shaped both siblings meet. Jesse’s search for Dylan leads her into the bureau’s supernatural emergency; Dylan’s experience of that emergency becomes part of the reason he is the lead in Resonant. The available official descriptions establish that chain, but do not give a complete account of every event between Dylan’s coma and awakening.

Why does the sequel move from the Oldest House to Manhattan?

Control centers on the FBC’s secretive headquarters under otherworldly attack. Control Resonant shifts its main action to Manhattan, where a new resonance, as well as the Hiss and Mold, is warping the city. Remedy describes altered gravity, reshaped streets, and interconnected zones to explore. The urban environment is therefore part of the supernatural disruption, not simply a new backdrop.

PRAGMATA - PlayStation 5
  • Out-of-This-World Adventure – Stranded on a lunar space station, Hugh encounters Diana, a mysterious android resembling a young girl. While searching for a way back to Earth, they fight to survive against Bots directed to “neutralize” intruders.
  • Hack & Shoot – Use each character’s distinct abilities to take down enemies. In combat, Diana can hack foes to expose weaknesses so Hugh can blast them with weapons. This unique fusion of gameplay offers an action-packed experience like no other.
  • Space Exploration – Teamwork also extends to traversing the station. Utilize the thrusters in Hugh’s futuristic suit to dash and hover around while Diana hacks security systems to solve puzzles. Only together can they overcome all obstacles.
  • Collect and Customize – Gather materials while exploring the station to unlock upgrades, build out a diverse arsenal of weapons, obtain new outfits, and more. Once you’re ready, use the new gear in battle and take on even greater challenges!

The change also reshapes the player’s perspective. Jesse’s first-game story is tied to entering the FBC and becoming its Director; Resonant follows Dylan as he moves through a city changed by forces connected to the broader mythology. The official descriptions establish the city’s distortion and the returning threats, but do not spell out every cause or plot connection. It is more accurate to describe Manhattan as the sequel’s paranaturally transformed setting than to claim that the Oldest House itself has moved or that the entire city has become part of the bureau.

Who is playable, and what role does Jesse have?

Dylan is the sole playable character in Control Resonant, according to PlayStation’s announcement by Remedy Co-Creative Director Mikael Kasurinen. Jesse is missing when Dylan wakes, yet she remains an important part of the story because the siblings’ arcs are built around each other. Players should not expect a dual-protagonist structure based on the official description.

This shift makes the sequel a continuation rather than a retelling. The first game gives the player Jesse’s experience of the Oldest House and the Hiss crisis; the sequel places the player with Dylan after those events. If you are trying to orient yourself before playing, remember the distinction: Jesse is the protagonist of Control, while Dylan leads Resonant.

Is Alan Wake part of the Control universe?

Yes. Remedy’s investor materials explicitly describe Control and Alan Wake as linked through the Remedy Connected Universe (RCU). That establishes an official shared-universe framing rather than a connection based only on fan speculation.

The scope of that statement matters. It confirms that the franchises are connected, but does not by itself explain every relationship between their characters, events, or settings. Nor does it validate every theory about how the games fit together. Remedy’s announcement for Control Resonant says returning players may recognize familiar threats, characters, and past events, while also describing the sequel as a new entry point. Those statements support continuity and accessibility; they are not a complete canon guide.

For a reader focused on Resonant, the most direct preparation is the Faden and FBC story in Control. Alan Wake belongs to the wider universe Remedy identifies, but the official material does not make playing every Alan Wake game a prerequisite for understanding Dylan’s immediate story.

Do you need to play Control before Control Resonant?

No prior play is presented as a requirement. Remedy’s Xbox announcement calls Resonant a new entry point, and says newcomers can begin without prior knowledge. Playing Control is still the clearest way to understand why Dylan’s awakening and Jesse’s disappearance matter: it supplies the sibling history, the Oldest House setting, and the Hiss crisis that precedes the sequel.

Choose your preparation based on what you want from the story:

  • For the direct character setup: play Control. It is the game in which Jesse searches for Dylan and the Hiss crisis at the Oldest House occurs.
  • For the wider Remedy connection: explore Alan Wake as an optional route into the other franchise Remedy links to Control. The official statements do not require it before Resonant.
  • For a fresh start: begin with Control Resonant if you prefer. Remedy says it is designed to admit newcomers, though some references and returning elements may carry more meaning if you know the earlier story.

There is no official mandatory play order in the available announcements. A sensible story-first order is Control followed by Control Resonant; treat the Alan Wake games as optional broader-universe context rather than required homework. The two franchises also differ in tone: Remedy describes Control as supernatural action-adventure, while Alan Wake 2 is survival horror. That can help you decide whether you want to explore the connected universe beyond the Faden storyline.

What is confirmed, and what remains unclear?

Official descriptions provide a firm outline, not an exhaustive continuity map. The following distinctions keep the connection clear without treating speculation as established story:

  • Confirmed: the FBC took Dylan as a child; he was taken over by the Hiss during the Oldest House crisis; Jesse stopped and cleansed him; he fell into a coma; years later he wakes with Jesse missing.
  • Confirmed: Dylan is the sole playable character in Resonant, and Jesse remains important to the siblings’ shared story.
  • Confirmed: the sequel’s main action moves to a Manhattan distorted by a new resonance, the Hiss, and Mold.
  • Confirmed: Remedy links Control and Alan Wake through the RCU and describes Resonant as a new entry point.
  • Not established by those broad statements: a full explanation of every crossover, a definitive answer to every fan theory, or a mandatory order covering all connected games.

Specific crossover claims need evidence about the particular event or game involved. For instance, a detailed explanation of the AWE expansion’s connections should be supported by material that describes those events directly; the general RCU statement alone is not enough to reconstruct them. This is why the safest short answer is both straightforward and limited: the universe is officially shared, but each specific plot link still needs its own support.

Where can you play Control Resonant?

Remedy announced a worldwide release date of September 24, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, with digital and physical editions. As of October 13, 2026, Remedy’s game page lists the game as out now on those platforms and on GeForce NOW. The page lists a Mac version via Steam and the App Store as following later in 2026, so its availability may depend on when and where you check.

Remedy identifies itself as the developer and publisher, with Annapurna Pictures as co-financier and co-producer. Steam lists a Deluxe Edition containing the main game, a digital artbook, the original soundtrack, and several digital extras. Store listings and physical stock can vary by region and change over time, so check the relevant platform’s current listing for exact availability and edition contents.

How to approach the Remedy universe without overcomplicating it

You do not need a complete chart of every shared-universe reference to understand the central premise of Control Resonant. Start with the level of context you want:

  1. Follow the direct story: know that Jesse searched for Dylan at the Oldest House, the Hiss crisis affected him, and he later wakes while Jesse is missing.
  2. Add the first game for fuller context: play Control to experience those events and understand the FBC setting from Jesse’s perspective.
  3. Explore the wider connection if interested: play Alan Wake titles as a separate route through the RCU, not as a stated prerequisite for Dylan’s story.
  4. Keep individual crossover claims specific: use the shared-universe label as the broad framework, then look for direct official explanation when asking how a particular event connects.

This approach preserves what makes the connection useful: Resonant follows on from a specific story about Jesse, Dylan, and the Oldest House, while also sitting within a broader universe Remedy says includes Alan Wake. It leaves room for returning players to recognize more without suggesting that newcomers must solve the entire mythology before starting.
