NextDNS is the clearer starting point if you want a configurable DNS filter with a published free tier, a published personal price, and explicit controls for optional query logs. Control D is more distinctive if you want scheduled profiles and DNS-based traffic redirection through proxy locations. Neither service is a proven universal winner for privacy or speed: the available vendor information does not provide an independent, matched comparison across the same networks and regions.

The practical choice depends on which controls you will use, how many devices or endpoints need coverage, and whether the plan’s limits fit. The prices below use different currencies and plan units, so they are not a like-for-like cost comparison.

What is the main difference between Control D and NextDNS?

Both services let you configure DNS filtering and offer encrypted DNS options. A DNS resolver receives domain lookups from a device and can apply rules before returning an answer. The services differ most clearly in how they present those rules and what else they let you do: NextDNS emphasizes security and content filters, analytics, custom lists, and configurable logging; Control D emphasizes profiles, schedules, service-level rules, and location redirection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters more than a general claim that one service is “better.” If you mainly want to block categories of unwanted domains, review the exact filtering options and log controls. If you want to route selected services or domains through proxy locations, Control D’s redirection feature is the more relevant capability. The reviewed material does not establish that either provider blocks more unwanted traffic for every user: results depend on configuration and the domains involved.

Decision point NextDNS Control D
Most prominent use Configurable threat, ad, tracker, and parental filtering with analytics and optional logs. Configurable filtering with profiles, schedules, service rules, and traffic redirection.
Published personal pricing Free tier and Pro price are listed in GBP on the official pricing page. The reviewed personal-use page does not state a price.
Notable plan detail Free allows 300,000 queries per month; after that, DNS continues without blocking. The reviewed SMB price is $2 per endpoint per month; it is a business offer, not a personal-plan price.
Speed evidence The provider describes its network as low latency, but no matched comparison with Control D is established. The provider advertises a 6.65 ms resolution speed, without enough published comparison context to establish a head-to-head result.

Which service has the filtering features you need?

NextDNS: broad filter categories and custom controls

NextDNS lists protection against malware and phishing, cryptojacking, DNS rebinding, typosquatting, and other threat categories. Its feature set also includes ad and tracker blocking, parental controls, SafeSearch, YouTube Restricted Mode, analytics, real-time logs, allow and deny lists, rewrites, and DNSSEC. That breadth makes it possible to combine security and household content controls within a configurable DNS setup rather than relying on a single blocklist.

For a household, the distinction between a category filter and a custom rule can be useful. A category is a convenient broad control; allow and deny lists let an administrator handle a particular domain that a category rule misses or blocks unexpectedly. Rewrites provide another kind of control, but the feature listing alone does not establish how a particular rewrite should be configured for every network. Check the current provider documentation for the intended setup before relying on it.

NextDNS also offers analytics and real-time logs, which can help explain why a site or app is not behaving as expected. Those features are useful only if the administrator is comfortable with the data involved and selects appropriate logging settings. The controls and their privacy implications are covered below.

Control D: profiles, schedules, service rules, and redirection

Control D’s personal-use overview describes family profiles, scheduled blocking, service-level rules, content filtering, and location redirection. Profiles and schedules are relevant when different people or devices need different policies, or when a rule should apply only at certain times. Service-level rules offer a way to manage named services rather than treating all domains identically.

Control D’s business feature documentation adds custom rules, analytics, SIEM streaming, multi-tenancy, and traffic redirection. Those business capabilities should not be assumed to be included in every personal plan. Similarly, the protocol list on its business pricing page is evidence about that business offering; confirm availability for the plan and use case you are considering.

The two feature lists do not provide a controlled test of filtering effectiveness. A longer list of categories or rules cannot by itself show which provider will block the domains that matter to you. If a particular game, streaming service, school device, or work application must remain available, the useful comparison is whether you can create and maintain the right exception or profile—not an abstract count of features.

Does Control D work like a VPN?

Not in the general sense. Control D describes redirection through proxy locations and says that this can mask the client IP address from destination websites without a VPN. That is a specific routing capability, not evidence that the service provides the complete set of protections associated with a full VPN connection. The available material also does not establish guaranteed access to region-restricted content, so do not choose it on the assumption that a location option will reliably unblock a particular service.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DNS filtering and traffic redirection solve different problems. Filtering determines whether a DNS lookup is allowed or altered under a rule. Redirection changes the route for selected traffic according to the service’s feature. A user who only wants malware or ad-domain filtering may not need redirection at all. A user who wants traffic routed through a location should check which destinations are covered, what the selected plan supports, and whether the target service permits or works with that route.

Which DNS protocols and devices are supported?

Both providers list encrypted DNS options, including DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH) and DNS-over-TLS (DoT). Control D’s business pricing page additionally lists DNS-over-QUIC (DoQ), DNS-over-HTTPS/3 (DoH3), and legacy DNS. Because those protocol details come from business documentation, do not treat them as proof that every protocol is available on every personal plan.

Protocol choice affects how a device or network sends DNS queries to a resolver; it does not by itself determine which filtering policy applies or guarantee better page-load speed. For a fair comparison, use the same device and protocol with both services where possible. If a device or router only supports a subset of options, that compatibility can decide the practical choice before any feature comparison does.

NextDNS’s pricing page lists unlimited devices and configurations for both its Free and Pro plans. That describes the listed plans, but does not remove the Free plan’s monthly query limit. For Control D, confirm the device and endpoint terms against the personal or business plan being considered; the SMB listing prices service per endpoint, which is a different unit from a consumer subscription.

How do the privacy and logging controls compare?

DNS queries reveal the domain names a device requests. Encrypting DNS in transit can limit visibility to observers on the local network, but it does not remove the resolver’s role in processing the query. A privacy comparison therefore needs to consider transport encryption, what is logged, retention, account and technical data, and what each vendor says about processing or sharing.

Privacy area NextDNS Control D
Query logging controls The provider says users can choose logging level, retention duration, and jurisdiction; logging can also be disabled. The business pricing page lists raw query retention of 30 days and analytics retention of up to one year. These business settings do not establish personal-plan settings.
Log or data region The provider says users can select the United States, European Union, United Kingdom, or Switzerland for data residency. The business pricing page says organizations can choose among three storage regions.
Access and deletion The privacy policy says users can view, export, or delete their data. The reviewed policy describes personal and technical data processing, but the cited business retention details should not be generalized to personal accounts.
Other stated processing The policy says data not specifically requested to be logged is discarded after the DNS response is sent. The policy describes service-improvement analytics, contract-related processing, and model training using anonymized voluntarily provided data; it says users can opt out of model training.

What NextDNS says about user data

NextDNS’s privacy policy states: “We do not (and will never) sell, license, sublicense or share any of the data submitted directly or indirectly by our users with any person or entity.” It also says: “When answering a DNS query, the server discards all request and response data immediately after sending back the response to you,” referring to data not specifically requested to be logged.

NextDNS says users can choose whether to log, how long selected data is retained, and the data jurisdiction. That gives a user meaningful configuration choices, but those are vendor statements and settings—not an independent privacy audit. A user who wants minimal retained query data should inspect the logging configuration rather than assuming the defaults meet their preference.

What Control D says about data and retention

Control D’s privacy policy was last updated February 26, 2026. It describes the company primarily as a personally identifiable information (PII) processor and says it may collect technical data when people interact with its website and platform, including IP address, device and browser details, URLs visited before using the service, and visit timing. It describes processing for contract performance and service-improvement analytics, as well as model training using anonymized data voluntarily provided by users. The policy also discusses subcontractors and safeguards for cross-border transfers, and says users may opt out of model training.

For business customers, Control D’s pricing page lists 30 days of raw query retention and analytics retention of up to one year, with hourly granularity for the most recent month and daily granularity for the most recent year. It also lists a choice of three storage regions. These details apply to the business offering described on that page; they are not evidence of the retention controls for all personal plans.

Neither provider’s policy statements should be treated as independently verified findings. If your decision depends on a specific legal or organizational requirement, review the current policy and the terms for the precise plan, region, and account type rather than relying on a general comparison.

How much do Control D and NextDNS cost?

The listed prices are not directly comparable: NextDNS publishes a personal/family subscription in GBP, while Control D’s disclosed price in the reviewed material is a business price in USD per endpoint. The Control D personal-use page reviewed does not publish a price, so its personal cost cannot be inferred from its SMB price.

Service and plan Published price and limits What the listing means
NextDNS Free £0 per month; 300,000 queries per month; unlimited devices and configurations; access to all features. After the monthly quota, DNS continues as a standard, non-blocking DNS service. The pricing page states that prices are in GBP.
NextDNS Pro £1.79 per month or £17.90 per year; unlimited queries, devices, and configurations. The page describes the plan as for personal and close-family use. The price is in GBP.
Control D SMB $2 per endpoint per month. This is a business plan price, not a disclosed personal subscription price.
Control D personal Price not stated on the reviewed personal-use page. Do not calculate a personal price from the SMB endpoint rate or assume an older third-party comparison remains current.

For NextDNS Free, the important limit is not a device cap but the monthly query allowance. Once 300,000 queries have been used in a month, the service continues resolving requests as standard DNS without blocking. That means a household could keep using DNS, but would lose the filtering behavior that motivated the configuration until the relevant allowance resets or the plan changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For NextDNS Pro, the yearly amount is £17.90 and the monthly amount is £1.79 as displayed on the pricing page. The listing does not say that the monthly figure is a discounted annual equivalent; treat the two as the stated billing options rather than assuming a different payment schedule. For Control D SMB, multiply the listed per-endpoint monthly rate by the number of billable endpoints only if the business offer’s terms confirm that is how your account is counted.

Exchange rates, country-specific availability, taxes, and later plan changes can alter what a buyer actually pays. Check each provider’s current price and plan terms before subscribing; the available listings do not support a universal claim that one service costs less for every reader.

Is Control D faster than NextDNS?

The evidence does not justify a universal speed winner. Control D’s homepage advertises a “6.65 ms” resolution speed and a “99.98% Malware block rate” attributed to Nexxwave, 2025. The available homepage information does not provide a sufficiently detailed, matched latency methodology against NextDNS, so neither figure should be read as a direct result of a Control D-versus-NextDNS test.

NextDNS describes its network as ultra-low latency and says it is embedded within carriers’ networks in major metropolitan areas. That is the provider’s description, not a measurement demonstrating that it is faster than Control D for a particular user. DNS response time depends on geography, ISP routing, the resolver point of presence, server load, cache state, and the filtering or redirection configuration. Even a fast DNS response is only one component of a page’s total load time.

A practical way to compare them on your network

  1. Choose one device and network. Test from the same device and connection, rather than comparing a home result from one service with a mobile or office result from the other.
  2. Keep the DNS protocol consistent. Where both plans and the device support the same encrypted protocol, use it for both tests. If a protocol differs, record that difference; otherwise the comparison may reflect the transport setup as well as the resolver.
  3. Match the filtering policy. Use comparable categories and avoid adding redirection to only one service unless you specifically want to measure that feature’s effect.
  4. Repeat under ordinary use. A single lookup can be affected by cache and routing conditions. Compare repeated observations at different times, and note whether the answers came from a warm or cold cache if your measurement method exposes that information.
  5. Check real browsing as well as lookup response. DNS response time is not the same as total page-load time. Confirm that the sites and apps you actually use resolve and behave as expected under each configuration.

This is a local decision method, not a claim that a specific test has been performed here. The reviewed sources do not provide an apples-to-apples study across regions and user networks.

Which service should you choose?

Start with NextDNS if these priorities fit

  • You want a published free tier with a clearly stated 300,000-query monthly limit.
  • You want published personal pricing in GBP and the stated Pro option for personal and close-family use.
  • You value a broad set of listed security, ad, tracker, and parental controls, plus custom lists, rewrites, analytics, and DNSSEC.
  • You want explicit stated controls over whether to log, retention duration, and data residency options.

Consider Control D if these priorities fit

  • You specifically want service rules, family profiles, or scheduled blocking.
  • You have a use case for DNS-based traffic redirection through proxy locations and understand that it is not a full VPN or a guarantee of access to region-restricted services.
  • You are evaluating a business deployment and need to examine its endpoint pricing, business protocol list, analytics, or other listed organizational features.

Pause and verify before choosing if these apply

  • Your decision depends on Control D’s personal-plan price: it is not stated on the reviewed personal-use page.
  • Your workplace or household requires a specific retention period, storage region, or processing term: verify it against the exact plan and current policy.
  • You need a particular protocol on a personal subscription: the expanded Control D list is documented on its business pricing page, so confirm personal-plan support.
  • Your deciding factor is speed: test both on your own network rather than treating vendor marketing figures as a universal ranking.

What to verify before subscribing

Feature pages and prices can change. Before committing, confirm the current plan name, price and billing currency; whether the intended plan is personal or business; query or endpoint limits; protocol support; and whether the filtering, profile, schedule, or redirection feature you need is included. For privacy-sensitive use, inspect the current logging defaults and available retention and region settings for that plan. These checks are especially important when comparing NextDNS’s personal subscription with Control D’s published SMB offer, because they are different kinds of plans.

On the facts available, there is no single winner across filtering, privacy, speed, and cost. NextDNS has the more transparent published personal pricing and query-limited free option; Control D has the more distinctive redirection feature and emphasizes profiles and schedules. Choose based on the feature and plan that match your actual use, then verify performance and compatibility from your own network.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
