When Control D appears not to work, first separate a failed browser verification from an actual DNS outage. Open the Control D Status Page in the affected browser, test an ordinary domain, and then trace DNS at the layer where you configured it: browser, operating system, router, or the Control D app/ctrld daemon. A browser can use Secure DNS or DNS-over-HTTPS independently of system DNS, while a VPN can replace or intercept DNS settings. If ordinary lookups succeed but blocking is wrong, inspect the active profile and filter rules instead of treating the incident as a connectivity failure.

What “Control D not working” actually tells you

Control D can be deployed in several places, and each placement affects a different set of applications. A browser-only configuration changes that browser. An operating-system configuration is available to applications that use the system resolver. A router configuration can cover devices on the network, while the Control D app or ctrld daemon can create a device-specific path. Troubleshooting the wrong layer can make a healthy configuration look broken.

Read the Status Page result precisely

Status Page result What it establishes What it does not establish
Using Control D The browser viewing the page detected a Control D resolver for its current DNS path. It does not prove that other browsers, applications, or devices use Control D.
Not using Control D The browser completed the check without detecting a Control D resolver. It does not show whether DNS is generally working or whether another device is configured correctly.
Unable to verify The browser verification did not complete successfully. It does not, by itself, prove that DNS is broken or that Control D is absent.

The distinction matters because the Status Page tests only the browser that opens it. A command-line lookup tests only the resolver path used by that command. Neither result is a universal health check for every app and device on a network.

Control D documentation, Status Page

Run a five-minute triage before changing settings

  1. Open the Status Page in the affected browser. Record the exact result and the time. Do not infer a DNS outage from “Unable to verify.”
  2. Load an ordinary domain. Use a site that is not part of your filtering test. If it opens, basic name resolution and connectivity are working for that browser, so investigate the verification path or policy rather than resetting DNS immediately.
  3. Try another application or device. A successful lookup in one browser does not prove that a desktop application, phone, or another computer uses the same resolver. Conversely, a browser-only failure does not prove that the router or operating-system resolver is down.
  4. Check the path you intended to configure. Identify whether you set Control D in the browser, operating system, router, or Control D software. The evidence must be collected at that same scope.
  5. Run a system check when appropriate. For a system or router deployment, Control D documents nslookup verify.controld.com. Output showing that the command reached a Control D resolver is evidence for that command’s path only; it does not prove that the browser is using the same resolver.
  6. Use the Activity Log for a device without a browser or command line. On a physical device already configured for Control D, query records appearing while you use that device indicate that its requests are reaching Control D.

If ordinary lookups fail in several applications, treat that as a DNS or connectivity incident and verify the deployment settings separately. If ordinary lookups succeed but filtering or verification is wrong, continue with path, browser, VPN, and profile checks.

Compare the resolver path at each configuration layer

The same device can have several DNS decision makers. The table below shows what each setup changes and which observation is meaningful.

Where Control D is configured Primary scope Useful evidence Common blind spot
Browser That browser only The Status Page in the same browser; browser-specific setup result Operating-system commands and other applications can continue using another resolver.
Operating system Applications that honor system DNS A resolver check from the operating system and Activity Log records A browser’s Secure DNS or DNS-over-HTTPS setting can bypass system DNS.
Router Devices using that router’s DNS settings A command from a client device and Activity Log records for that device Manually specified DNS, VPN software, guest networks, or a browser resolver can take a different path.
Control D app or ctrld daemon The device or interface managed by the software Activity Log entries and a check that targets the local listener Other interfaces and applications may not be bound to the managed listener.

Why a command-line result can disagree with the browser

A browser-only setup is not expected to alter operating-system command-line results. The reverse is also true: a successful nslookup does not guarantee that a browser with its own Secure DNS provider is using Control D. Always state which program produced the observation and which setup method you intended.

Use the Activity Log as device-level evidence

Activity Log entries are useful when the device has no convenient browser test or when several applications behave differently. Look for queries generated while actively using the device. Records show that requests reached Control D, but they do not by themselves prove that every application on the device is using the same profile or resolver.

Check browser Secure DNS and DNS-over-HTTPS

Chrome and Firefox can resolve names through a browser-level Secure DNS or DNS-over-HTTPS provider. That provider can differ from the operating-system or router DNS you configured for Control D. This is the most common explanation when system checks look correct but a browser’s filtering behavior does not.

If Control D should apply through the operating system or router

  1. Open the browser’s privacy or security settings and locate Secure DNS, DNS-over-HTTPS, or the equivalent resolver option.
  2. Determine whether the browser is using an explicitly selected provider instead of the system resolver.
  3. Align the browser with your intended deployment: use the browser-specific Control D setup if the browser should connect directly, or follow your administrator’s policy for allowing system DNS.
  4. Reopen the Status Page and test a normal domain after the change.

Do not treat “Unable to verify” alone as proof that Secure DNS overrode Control D. Verification may fail for other reasons; confirm the browser’s selected resolver and compare it with an ordinary lookup.

Resolve VPN and overlay-network DNS conflicts

When failures, filtering bypasses, or intermittent behavior begin exactly when a VPN connects or disconnects, inspect which component is managing DNS. VPN and endpoint-security software can install their own DNS servers, routes, or policies and may compete with Control D.

Use DNS Intercept Mode where it fits

Control D documents DNS Intercept Mode to stop VPN software from fighting with Control D over DNS settings. Its documented platform support covers Windows and macOS; the documentation states that Linux is not supported. The compatibility examples include F5 BIG-IP APM, Cisco AnyConnect, Palo Alto GlobalProtect, Tailscale, Windscribe, and WireGuard. These are tested cases in the documentation, not a guarantee for every version, policy, or corporate configuration.

Control D documentation, DNS Intercept Mode

Test Intercept Mode with the correct Windows command

On Windows, nslookup.exe bypasses the DNS Client and its NRPT rules. That makes ordinary nslookup an unreliable test of DNS Intercept Mode. Control D recommends resolving a name with PowerShell instead:

Resolve-DnsName example.com

You can query the local ctrld listener explicitly with nslookup when that is how your installation is configured. Compare results with the VPN disconnected and connected, and note which command and interface produced each result. A change that appears only during VPN use points to the VPN’s DNS handling rather than to a generic Control D outage.

When the VPN cannot be changed

Some managed VPN profiles enforce DNS and prevent local overrides. In that case, document the behavior with the VPN state, the affected applications, and the exact resolver output, then follow the organization’s endpoint policy. Repeatedly changing router DNS will not correct a VPN that deliberately replaces it.

Fix filtering problems when DNS itself works

If ordinary sites resolve and load but a category is not blocked, or a legitimate site is blocked, the issue is usually policy selection rather than connectivity.

Confirm the profile enforced by the endpoint

Control D describes filters as blocklists attached to profiles. Verify which profile the affected endpoint is actually using, then inspect its enabled filters, service-specific rules, and exceptions. A profile change made for one device does not automatically prove that another device or browser is using it.

Handle a legitimate domain that is blocked

  1. Confirm that the block comes from a Control D filter rather than the site, browser, VPN, or an endpoint security product.
  2. Identify the filter source responsible for the match.
  3. Create a local exception when the domain is trusted and your policy allows it.
  4. Report the false positive to the relevant filter maintainer so the source list can be corrected.

Allow for filter rebuild cadence

Control D says filters are rebuilt and deployed every 15 minutes or less. A newly changed rule may therefore take time to appear at an endpoint; that cadence is not a promise that every individual change will become visible instantly. Recheck the active profile and query the domain again after the update window.

Match troubleshooting to the deployment method

Control D documents DNS-over-HTTPS, DNS-over-TLS, DNS-over-QUIC, and optional legacy DNS. The secure protocols can be configured according to the capabilities of the device or software you selected.

Modern operating systems

Secure DNS support is built into Windows 11, macOS Big Sur or newer, iOS 14 or newer, and Android 9 or newer. These systems do not require extra software merely to use a supported secure DNS method. Verify the resolver address, protocol, and profile associated with the device rather than installing additional software as a first response.

Router deployments

A router must send DNS queries to a resolver associated with a configured Control D device. Changing a client browser’s setting can create a different path from the router, and a guest network may use separate DNS settings. Test from a client that is actually using the intended router configuration.

Control D app and ctrld

The setup software and command-line daemon can provide a local listener or device-specific routing. Use the Activity Log to confirm queries from the managed device. If you use nslookup, target the local listener explicitly; otherwise the command may test a different resolver.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Legacy DNS

Control D lists legacy DNS as optional. Prefer the secure protocol supported by your deployment, and make sure the client is not simultaneously configured with an unrelated legacy server that takes precedence.

When ordinary DNS fails, investigate connectivity separately

If normal domains fail in multiple applications, first record whether the failure occurs with the VPN connected, which network interface is active, and which deployment method is supposed to provide DNS. Recheck the configured resolver and protocol at that layer, then compare behavior with the VPN or overlay disconnected when policy permits.

  • A browser-only failure points toward browser Secure DNS or a browser-specific setup.
  • Failure across applications on one device points toward the operating-system, app, daemon, or VPN DNS path.
  • Failure across several devices on one network points toward router DNS, upstream reachability, or a network-wide VPN policy.
  • Successful DNS with incorrect blocking points toward profile, filter, exception, or propagation behavior.

Keep these branches separate. Reinstalling software or changing filters cannot repair an unreachable resolver, and changing router DNS cannot correct a browser that deliberately uses another provider.

Prepare a useful support report

Before escalating, collect the facts that let someone reproduce the correct path:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Deployment type: browser, operating system, router, Control D app, or ctrld.
  • Operating-system version, browser name and version, affected applications, and device type.
  • Whether ordinary domains resolve and whether the problem changes when a VPN or overlay is connected.
  • The exact Status Page result and timestamp.
  • The command used, such as nslookup verify.controld.com, Resolve-DnsName example.com, or a query sent to a local listener.
  • The active profile, relevant filters, exceptions, and the approximate time a rule was changed.

The Status Page’s copied diagnostic output can include personal data such as your IP address and Endpoint ID. Send those diagnostics privately to support; do not paste them into a public forum.

A reliable stopping rule

You can stop treating the incident as a single “Control D outage” once you have identified the scope of the failure. A browser verification error with working ordinary lookups is a path or probe problem. Working DNS with incorrect blocks is a profile or filter problem. Failures that follow VPN state belong in the VPN DNS branch. Only after the relevant browser, system, router, or daemon path fails ordinary lookups should you continue with general DNS and connectivity diagnosis.
