Android and iPhone can both be controlled with an attached physical keyboard, using accessibility settings and keyboard shortcuts to move through the interface and activate items. The exact tools differ: Android offers physical-keyboard accessibility options and TalkBack shortcuts, while iPhone offers Full Keyboard Access.
The title’s reference to a flip-phone keyboard feature is not specific enough to identify a particular older feature or establish a historical link. The documented similarities are current ways to use a physical keyboard with a smartphone—not proof that either platform inherited a feature from a particular flip phone.
What you can do with a phone’s physical keyboard
These features are for someone who has connected a physical keyboard, such as a compatible Bluetooth keyboard. They add keyboard-based navigation or accessibility controls; they are not required for typing with the phone’s on-screen keyboard.

How Android’s physical-keyboard accessibility settings work
On Android 16.0 and later, connect a physical keyboard and open Settings > Accessibility > Physical keyboard accessibility. If the setting is missing, Google advises attaching a physical keyboard and checking again. Availability can vary by Android version and device.
Choose the option that addresses the task
- Bounce Keys: ignores rapid repeated presses of the same key.
- Mouse Keys: uses keyboard keys or a number pad to move and click the pointer.
- Slow Keys: requires a key to be held for a set time before the press registers.
- Sticky Keys: lets you activate modifier keys separately, so you can perform a multi-key shortcut without holding a modifier down while pressing the other key.
Google also documents Action + Alt + 5 as a Sticky Keys shortcut. Keyboard labels and layouts can differ, so use the settings path if that key combination does not match your keyboard.
How Android TalkBack keyboard shortcuts work
TalkBack supports shortcuts from an external keyboard. Google documents two keymaps: Default and Enhanced. Enhanced includes commands focused on web navigation and Browse mode, so shortcut instructions can differ depending on which keymap is active. You can change keymaps and reassign shortcuts in TalkBack’s keyboard-shortcuts settings; do not assume a shortcut list applies identically to every configuration.

How to turn on Full Keyboard Access on iPhone
- Connect a Magic Keyboard or another physical keyboard to your iPhone.
- Open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboards & Typing.
- Tap Full Keyboard Access, then turn it on.

- Tab: move forward.
- Shift-Tab: move backward.
- Space bar: activate the selected item.
- Fn-H: open the Home Screen.
