You can control a desktop app from your phone without an API by connecting to the computer with a remote desktop or phone-to-PC control client. The phone shows the desktop and sends touch, pointer, and keyboard input to the running app. For a first attempt, use an established remote-control client; build a custom phone interface only if you need named buttons or repeatable actions that ordinary input cannot provide.
How phone control works when an app has no API
The remote client connects to the host computer, displays its screen, and forwards your input into the existing desktop session. The app does not need to provide a phone interface or expose an API for this kind of manual control.
This is different from automating the app. A remote session lets you operate its visible controls; it does not establish that the app supports reliable automation, unattended operation, or access to its internal functions. Whether the approach works well depends on the computer and phone operating systems, network, app interface, and the task you need to perform.
Choose between desktop control and a purpose-built remote
Start with whole-desktop remote control when you need to see the app and use its ordinary interface. Consider a custom remote only when you need a small set of named buttons, repeatable shortcuts, or tightly scoped actions rather than a view of the entire desktop.

These options are not interchangeable. Check whether you need the whole desktop or a particular app environment, how the phone will connect, and whether the app’s controls are usable through touch or keyboard. The cited product pages do not provide a shared security assessment or comparable latency tests, so they cannot establish which option is safest or fastest for your setup.
Set up and test the remote session
- Identify the host and phone. Note the computer’s operating system, the phone’s operating system, and whether they are on the same network or need access from elsewhere. Compatibility and connection requirements vary by client and service.
- Choose a client that supports your environment. For Windows App, Microsoft lists network connectivity and a user account for a remote PC. Azure Virtual Desktop, Windows 365, Dev Box, and Remote Desktop Services may also require an assigned resource and the relevant organization account or connection details. Check the requirements for the exact Windows App service. The documentation lists Android 10 or later for several Android and Chrome OS service contexts; verify the live requirement for the product and release you plan to use.
- Connect and open the app. Follow the selected client’s setup for the host and phone, then connect to the computer and launch the desktop app in the session. Windows App supports remote PC and managed-resource scenarios, but the steps differ by environment.
- Try the input modes your task needs. Test tapping, pointer movement, text entry, and shortcuts before relying on the connection for important work. - Test the complete workflow. Use the actual dialogs, controls, text, and shortcuts involved in your task. Keep another way to access the computer available if a control is hard to reach or input does not behave as expected.
Choose the right touch and keyboard behavior
Direct touch or pointer mode
In Windows App, direct touch sends a click where you tap the display. Pointer mode lets you move a visible pointer with your finger. Try both: direct touch can suit large, easy-to-hit controls, while pointer movement may help when you need more deliberate positioning. On-screen or physical keyboard
The on-screen keyboard is convenient for short text. A compact Bluetooth keyboard for phone is an optional alternative when you need sustained typing or keyboard shortcuts; Microsoft documents Bluetooth keyboard use in Windows App on Android, but the accessory is not required. Check that any keyboard you choose works with your phone.
Scancode or Unicode input
Windows App documents two keyboard input modes. In scancode mode, the physical key position and the remote session’s keyboard layout determine the result. In Unicode mode, characters are translated using the user locale, and some complex input may require an input method editor (IME). If the phone and host use different keyboard layouts, test punctuation, shortcuts, and non-Latin text in the actual session before depending on them. Microsoft’s keyboard-mode details

When ordinary remote control is not enough
A custom phone remote may make sense when a task consists of a few repeatable actions and you want controls tailored to them. But the absence of an API does not itself show that those actions can be safely or reliably automated. The app and host operating system determine what other control mechanisms, if any, are available; the cited sources do not establish a turnkey bridge for an unspecified app.

- Use a standard remote session when you need to see the app and interact with its visible interface.
- Investigate a custom interface only after confirming that the exact app and operating system allow the required actions.
- Keep manual control as a fallback if the workflow depends on precise input, dialogs, or shortcuts.
What to verify before relying on it
- Compatibility: Does the chosen client support both your computer and phone, and is any phone platform still in beta?
- Connection requirements: Does your setup require a user or organization account, an assigned resource, or a particular network connection?
- Input accuracy: Can you reliably reach the app’s controls, enter the needed characters, and trigger the right shortcuts?
- Workflow coverage: Do dialogs and other parts of the full task work, not just the app’s main screen?
- Fallback: Can you switch to the computer itself if touch, latency, or keyboard behavior makes the task unreliable?
