“Continuous still recording” does not have one universal camera meaning. On Sharp’s VL-NZ8S/10S camcorder, STILL records a continuous still image to tape; JVC used the related label “High-Speed Continuous Still Recording” for capturing stills rapidly in succession. Check the camera’s own manual to learn which behavior its mode provides.
What does continuous still recording mean?
It is a manufacturer-specific label for a still-image recording mode, not a single standardized behavior. Depending on the camera, it can describe recording one still-like image continuously or taking a series of separate stills in quick succession.
How Sharp and JVC use the term

These are distinct implementations. The term alone does not tell you whether a camera creates one continuous still-like recording or a burst of separate images.

How Sharp’s still-recording modes differ
STILL and SNAP
On the Sharp VL-NZ8S/10S, the manual distinguishes STILL from SNAP: STILL records a continuous still image, while SNAP records a still picture for six seconds. The same manual says still recording can be used during recording or initiated from recording standby. The control names and behavior apply to these models, not to camcorders generally. Separate multi-frame effects
Sharp also describes 9 FRAMES and 16 FRAMES effects, which use pictures taken at one-eighth-of-a-second intervals. These are multi-frame effects, not the manual’s continuous STILL mode.
What to check in your camera’s manual
- Output: Does the setting record one still-like image, or save multiple still images?
- Duration or interval: Is there a fixed recording duration or a stated interval between frames?
- Controls: What buttons or menu settings start and stop the mode? On the Sharp models, users select a still-recording mode, press STILL in recording standby, then press REC START/STOP to record the displayed image.
- Image quality: Sharp cautions that picture quality in its still-recording function is slightly lower than normal pictures. This is a model-specific limitation, not a general rule.
Sharp’s advice for stationary subjects
For a still-life image on the VL-NZ8S/10S, Sharp says turning the MOTION setting off can produce a clearer result. It also warns that a moving subject can blur with that setting off, and recommends attaching the camcorder to a tripod to help prevent image shake.
