Context is what lets a security system judge whether an access request makes sense. Instead of trusting anything inside a network, it evaluates the identity, device, resource, network conditions and current threat signals before allowing access. That approach—formalized in NIST’s zero-trust architecture—is increasingly important as breaches combine software flaws, ransomware, phishing, mobile targeting and generative-AI-assisted techniques.

Why context matters in cybersecurity

A username, an IP address or a device’s location is only one clue. A useful decision also asks who is requesting access, which device is being used, what resource is targeted, what the user normally does, whether the device is healthy, and whether current threat intelligence raises the risk.

NIST describes zero trust as moving defenses “from static, network-based perimeters to focus on users, assets, and resources.” Its architecture assumes that no user account or asset receives implicit trust solely because it is owned by the organization or connected to an internal network. Authentication and authorization occur before a session is established.

This matters because work now spans cloud services, remote connections, contractors, personal devices and software-as-a-service applications. There may be no single physical boundary that reliably separates “inside” from “outside.” Context allows policy to follow the user, device and resource instead of the office network.

What current attacks reveal

Verizon’s 2026 Data Breach Investigations Report analyzes incidents from November 1, 2024, through October 31, 2025. Its figures show several attack paths operating at once:

  • 31% of breaches started with software vulnerabilities. Keeping exposed applications and infrastructure patched is therefore an access-control issue as well as a maintenance task.
  • 48% of breaches involved ransomware. Limiting privileges and segmenting critical systems can restrict how far an intruder moves after an initial compromise.
  • 15% of attack techniques were bolstered by generative AI. Automated reconnaissance, convincing messages and faster variation make static indicators less dependable.
  • Mobile click rates were 40% higher. A policy that protects desktop users but ignores phones leaves a major delivery channel exposed.

These percentages describe prevalence in Verizon’s report; they do not prove that one control, including zero trust, will reduce breaches by a particular amount. They do show why organizations need several controls that respond to the specific asset and attack path.

How zero trust uses context

1. Establish the identity

Every request begins with authentication of the person, service or workload. Multifactor authentication raises the cost of using a stolen password. For high-risk or phishing-prone workflows, phishing-resistant methods such as hardware security keys using FIDO2 can provide a stronger signal than a password or a one-time code alone.

2. Check the device

Policy can consider whether a device is managed, encrypted, patched, running approved security software and meeting the organization’s baseline. An otherwise valid user may receive a different decision from a compliant laptop, an unknown personal computer and a phone with an outdated operating system.

3. Evaluate the resource and action

Reading a public document is not equivalent to exporting a payroll database or changing an administrator account. Authorization should identify the resource, the requested operation and the minimum privilege required. Short-lived, narrowly scoped access is safer than a permanent broad entitlement.

4. Add environmental and threat signals

Location, time, network reputation, impossible-travel indicators, unusual download volume and active threat intelligence can change the decision. A request from a familiar account may still require step-up authentication or a block if it arrives from a newly observed device immediately after a suspicious login.

5. Reassess throughout the session

Zero trust is not a single login screen. A session can be challenged, restricted or terminated when device health changes, behavior becomes anomalous or an emerging indicator affects the targeted service.

Perimeter security, zero trust and layered risk programs

The approaches differ in the signal they trust and in how precisely they can contain an incident.

Approach Primary signal Authorization scope Cloud, remote and BYOD fit Visibility and logging Lateral-movement containment Adaptability Cost profile
Traditional perimeter model Network location or ownership Often broad after entry Weak when assets sit outside one boundary Strongest at the perimeter; gaps can remain inside Limited if internal trust is broad Slower to reflect changing attacker behavior Lower initial change, but blind spots can create substantial incident exposure
Zero-trust architecture Identity, device, resource, request and context Explicit, least-privilege decisions before access Designed for distributed environments Requires centralized policy, telemetry and audit trails Segmentation and narrow permissions reduce blast radius Policies can incorporate new risk signals Higher implementation and operating effort, especially during migration
Layered, risk-based program Context plus controls matched to attack paths Varies by asset and risk Can combine zero-trust controls with endpoint, email, mobile and cloud defenses Broadest when telemetry is integrated Combines segmentation, backups, detection and response Best suited to changing threats when regularly reviewed Ongoing investment is directed toward the systems and scenarios with the greatest exposure

Zero trust is an architecture, not a product that replaces patching, backups, security testing or incident response. A layered program uses its principles while addressing the different ways attackers enter and operate.

What to prioritize against ransomware and phishing

  1. Protect identities first. Require multifactor authentication, remove unused accounts, review privileged access and prefer phishing-resistant authentication for administrators and sensitive applications.
  2. Patch exposed software quickly. Maintain an inventory of internet-facing applications, prioritize vulnerabilities affecting high-value systems and verify that updates actually deployed.
  3. Segment critical resources. Separate backups, administrative interfaces and sensitive data from ordinary user networks. Use least privilege so a compromised account cannot reach everything.
  4. Secure email and mobile workflows. Train users to report suspicious messages, apply link and attachment controls, and include phones in mobile-device, browser and authentication policies. The 40% higher mobile click rate reported by Verizon makes mobile coverage an immediate priority.
  5. Make recovery independent of the attacker. Keep protected, tested backups; document how to isolate affected systems; and maintain an incident-response plan with clear decision owners.
  6. Test the controls. Regular security testing should verify that a stolen credential, unpatched service or phishing message cannot produce unrestricted access.

A practical implementation sequence

  1. Identify high-value resources. List sensitive data, business-critical applications, infrastructure services and accounts that would cause serious harm if altered or unavailable.
  2. Map dependencies and flows. Record which users, devices, services and data exchanges connect to each resource. Include cloud systems, remote workers, contractors and personal devices where permitted.
  3. Set an explicit access policy. Define the identity, device conditions, resource, action and risk signals required for each category of request.
  4. Enforce authentication and authorization before every session. Replace network-location assumptions with verified identity and device signals, then grant only the requested privilege.
  5. Segment and contain. Isolate high-impact systems and restrict administrative paths. Design for the possibility that one account or endpoint will be compromised.
  6. Centralize telemetry. Send authentication, endpoint, application, network and data-access logs to a system where analysts can correlate events and retain evidence.
  7. Reassess risk continuously. Trigger additional verification or block access when behavior, device health, location or threat intelligence changes.
  8. Review against real attack paths. Use vulnerability findings, phishing exercises, ransomware scenarios and mobile incidents to adjust policies and priorities.

Detecting a risky access request

Security teams should look for combinations of signals rather than a single suspicious attribute. Examples include a privileged login from a new device, a sudden request for large data exports, an impossible travel pattern followed by an administrative change, or a compliant user account accessing a service associated with an active vulnerability.

A useful workflow records the request, compares it with the user’s and device’s normal behavior, checks the resource’s sensitivity, consults current threat intelligence and then applies a graduated response: allow, require stronger authentication, limit the action, quarantine the device or deny access. Logging the reason for each decision helps investigators distinguish a genuine attack from a false positive.

Is zero trust enough for AI-powered attacks?

No. Zero trust reduces the value of stolen credentials and limits what an intruder can reach, but it does not identify every malicious message, unknown vulnerability or deceptive social-engineering attempt. Verizon’s finding that 15% of attack techniques were bolstered by generative AI is a reminder that attackers can increase speed and persuasion.

Defenses must therefore combine context-aware access with timely software updates, phishing awareness training, encryption, regular security testing, endpoint and mobile monitoring, protected backups and an incident-response plan. AI-assisted attacks still need an entry point and permissions; strong authentication, narrow authorization and segmentation make those steps harder and make successful compromises easier to contain.

Limits and operating discipline

Context is only as reliable as the data and policies behind it. An incomplete asset inventory, stale device-status feed or excessive exception list can produce false confidence. Organizations should assign owners to identity, device, application and data signals; measure how often policies are overridden; remove obsolete accounts and devices; and review rules whenever systems or working patterns change.

NIST provides the architectural rationale for this model, while Verizon’s 2026 report supplies current breach context. Neither source establishes a controlled percentage reduction attributable specifically to context-aware security. The defensible conclusion is operational: evaluate each request in relation to its user, device, resource and risk, then match controls to the attack path instead of relying on a uniform perimeter checklist.
