A contactless payment lets you pay by holding a compatible card, phone, or wearable near a payment terminal. Near-field communication (NFC) carries the short-range exchange; EMV contactless specifications shape how chip-card and mobile-wallet payments work. A tap is designed to protect payment credentials, but it does not make every kind of fraud impossible, and verification rules differ by issuer, network, terminal, device, and country.

What is a contactless payment?

It is a checkout payment made without inserting or swiping a card. You present a contactless-enabled card, or a phone or wearable set up with a payment credential, close to a compatible reader. The reader and payment instrument communicate over NFC, a short-range wireless technology. EMVCo describes both contactless chip cards and NFC-enabled mobile devices as ways to make in-store EMV contactless payments.

Contactless use is widespread, but the available figures need context. Mastercard reported on March 10, 2025, that tap-and-go payments accounted for more than two in three in-person transactions on Mastercard’s network globally. That is a figure for that network, not for every payment method or all global transactions.

How does a tap-to-pay transaction work?

  1. The reader detects the payment instrument. A contactless card contains a chip and antenna; a compatible reader communicates with it at close range. A phone or wearable uses its NFC capability to present a payment credential.
  2. The payment details are exchanged. The terminal and payment system exchange data needed to process the transaction. The exact data flow varies with the device, payment application, network, processor, and terminal.
  3. The transaction is sent for authorization. The payment is routed through the relevant systems, and the terminal displays the result. Depending on the circumstances, it may ask for a PIN or another verification step.

Visa says contactless payments use NFC, and Mastercard describes NFC as working over a distance of a few inches. Short range is a feature of the communication, not a security guarantee by itself.

How to pay by tapping a card, phone, or watch

  1. Look for the symbols. Check the card for the contactless indicator and the checkout reader for the matching symbol. For a phone or watch, make sure a supported payment method is set up on the device.
  2. Check the displayed amount. Confirm that the terminal shows the amount you intend to pay before you authorize the transaction.
  3. Present the payment instrument. When prompted, hold the card or payment-enabled device near the reader’s indicated area. Visa says holding a card flat over the symbol works best, although reader placement varies.
  4. Wait for confirmation. Keep the instrument near the reader until the terminal confirms the payment or displays another instruction. If asked, enter a PIN or complete the requested device verification.
  5. Use another supported method if tapping fails. If the reader does not accept contactless payment, follow the merchant’s available options. Visa says a contactless Visa card can also be inserted or swiped where those methods are accepted.

What security protections does contactless payment use?

The protection is not simply that a card is close to the reader. Payment chips and transaction protocols are designed to protect payment information during processing. Visa says each contactless transaction generates a transaction-specific, one-time code, which it describes as effective in reducing counterfeit fraud. Mastercard says the EMV chip encrypts account information.

Those protections address aspects of payment processing; they do not eliminate every risk. A stolen card, compromised account, social-engineering scam, merchant dispute, or lost phone can create problems beyond the tap interface. Device security and issuer controls matter too.

Which verification prompts or limits should you expect?

There is no single contactless rule that applies everywhere. Whether a terminal asks for a PIN or other verification can depend on the issuer, network, country, transaction, device, and terminal. Phone and watch payments may also require the device’s own unlock or verification, depending on how the payment service and device are configured.

Do not assume that every tap is PIN-free, or that one country’s transaction limit applies to your card elsewhere. If a prompt appears, follow the terminal or device instructions; for account-specific rules, check with your card issuer.

What to do if a contactless payment looks unauthorized

  • Contact the card issuer promptly using the number or secure channel it provides.
  • Follow the issuer’s instructions to report the transaction, secure the account, and dispute the charge if appropriate.
  • Review recent transactions and turn on account alerts if your issuer offers them.

Liability protections depend on the card and transaction. Visa’s Zero Liability terms include exclusions, such as certain commercial and anonymous prepaid card transactions and transactions not processed by Visa. Visa advises cardholders to contact their issuer for details and report unauthorized use promptly; do not assume that identical coverage applies to every payment.

Contactless card versus phone or watch

Option What you present What to expect
Contactless card The card’s chip and antenna Look for the contactless mark and hold the card near the reader. A terminal or issuer may require a PIN or another step.
Phone or wearable A payment credential presented by an NFC-enabled device The device may require its own unlock or verification. Setup and prompts vary by device, payment application, issuer, and country.

Either option still depends on the merchant having a compatible reader and accepting the payment method. A phone or wearable is not automatically safer in every situation, and the sources cited here do not establish a universal fraud-rate ranking between these methods.
