Neither provider wins every workload. Contabo’s US pricing page emphasizes comparatively large listed VPS allocations and prices displayed for a 24-month term, while Hetzner publishes dated regional Cloud prices, separates product families, and documents a 99.9% monthly availability target. The practical winner is the service that matches your required CPU, memory, storage, region, traffic policy, billing term, IPv4 cost and contractual remedy after those items are normalized.
This guide compares the evidence available for 2026 without treating a plan label or headline price as a performance benchmark. Use it to build an apples-to-apples shortlist, then test your application on the exact plan and region before moving production traffic.

A VPS plan’s vCPU count and RAM describe an allocation, not how quickly your application will run. CPU generation, shared-host contention, storage behavior, virtualization details, kernel configuration and your own software stack can change results. No matched independent benchmark was established for these providers, so this comparison cannot honestly declare one universally faster, more reliable or better value.
It can establish several decision facts. Contabo’s US page shows Cloud VPS options from 4 vCPU/8 GB RAM through 18 vCPU/96 GB RAM, with storage and port specifications; the displayed prices are tied to a 24-month term. Hetzner’s official price-adjustment document records Cloud prices effective June 15, 2026 for new orders and Cloud instance rescales, and says the listed figures exclude VAT and IPv4. Hetzner also publishes a Cloud availability target and its measurement and credit remedy. Those facts are useful only when you compare equivalent requirements in the same currency, tax treatment, billing horizon and region.

Pricing in 2026: compare the bill you will actually pay
Contabo’s displayed US prices
The US pricing extract lists Cloud VPS 4 at $4.40 per month with 4 vCPU and 8 GB RAM, and Cloud VPS 18 at $39.20 per month with 18 vCPU and 96 GB RAM. Both figures are shown for a 24-month term on Contabo’s US page, so they should not be read as month-to-month rates or generalized to other countries and currencies. The page also provides storage and port specifications; check the live listing for the exact values that apply when you order.
A 24-month display can make the monthly number look lower than a shorter commitment. Record the total obligation, renewal price, cancellation terms and any setup charge, rather than copying only the monthly headline. If your project may end before two years, calculate the effective cost over the period you realistically expect to run it.
Hetzner’s post-adjustment examples
Hetzner’s official price table, effective June 15, 2026, lists CX23 at €5.49 per month in Germany and Finland and CPX22 at €19.49 per month in those locations. The published figures exclude VAT and IPv4. CX23 and CPX22 are different product tiers; their prices must not be presented as direct equivalents to a particular Contabo VPS solely because the monthly amounts are easy to place side by side.
For a valid comparison, add the applicable VAT rate, IPv4 charge and any other recurring line item to the Hetzner amount. Convert currencies using a rate you document, or compare each provider in the currency in which you will actually be billed. Recheck the price table immediately before ordering because regional prices and policies can change.

A repeatable total-cost worksheet
- Define the billing horizon. Calculate one month, twelve months and your expected retention period. Keep committed-term and flexible-term scenarios separate.
- Choose one region. Do not compare a US price with a German or Finnish price when latency, tax or currency differs. Select the nearest region that satisfies residency and user-latency requirements.
- Normalize resources. Specify minimum vCPU, RAM, storage capacity and storage type. If one provider cannot state an equivalent, mark the value as not stated instead of inferring it from a plan name.
- Add mandatory extras. Include VAT, IPv4, backups, snapshots, traffic overages and paid support where applicable. Hetzner’s cited figures explicitly exclude VAT and IPv4; Contabo’s displayed US term and inclusions must be confirmed on the live checkout.
- Calculate the commitment risk. Multiply the recurring charge by the committed months and include any difference between promotional, initial and renewal pricing.
- Stress-test traffic. Estimate normal egress, peaks and abuse scenarios. Treat Contabo’s unlimited label as conditional because unusually high or disruptive traffic can trigger throttling under fair-use rules.
The result is a fully loaded monthly and period cost, not a misleading comparison of two large-font prices.
Resources: why listed vCPUs and RAM are not a benchmark
Contabo’s published range makes it easy to identify a nominal allocation: Cloud VPS 4 provides 4 vCPU and 8 GB RAM, while Cloud VPS 18 provides 18 vCPU and 96 GB RAM. Those numbers are useful for capacity planning, but they do not establish single-thread speed, sustained multi-core throughput, disk I/O latency or noisy-neighbor behavior.

Hetzner’s CX and CPX names identify product families rather than a universal performance scale. The cited examples—CX23 and CPX22—are intentionally not mapped to Contabo plans because the available evidence does not provide matched CPU models, storage tests or application benchmarks. A database, build server, game service and static website can each favor a different balance of burst CPU, sustained CPU, memory headroom and storage latency.
Match the bottleneck, not the largest number
- Memory-bound services: size for the working set plus filesystem cache and a safety margin. Swapping can erase the benefit of additional vCPUs.
- CPU-bound services: measure both single-thread response time and sustained parallel throughput. A higher vCPU count alone does not prove faster requests.
- Storage-bound databases: test random read/write latency, fsync behavior and backup duration with production-like data.
- Network-heavy services: measure sustained transfer, packet loss and latency to your users, while checking each provider’s traffic conditions.
- Bursty workloads: observe performance during neighboring load and your own peak window, not only during an idle test.
Network traffic and port considerations
Contabo’s US page presents port specifications alongside storage and resource information, but the available extract does not establish a single port value for every plan. Verify the exact port speed and any restrictions on the plan you select. More importantly, its “unlimited” traffic wording is qualified by fair-use conditions, including possible throttling for unusually high or disruptive traffic. Unlimited therefore means you must read the acceptable-use and fair-use language, not that any sustained volume is guaranteed at full port speed.

The cited Hetzner price material does not provide one directly comparable traffic allowance for every Cloud family and region. Obtain the current allowance, egress treatment and any overage rule for the exact instance before modeling a media, backup, mirror or download workload. Measure traffic in both directions if your application serves users and also pulls large datasets.
Traffic due diligence checklist
- Estimate average and 95th-percentile outbound bandwidth, not just monthly gigabytes.
- Identify short spikes that could be interpreted as unusual or disruptive.
- Confirm whether backups, snapshots and inter-region transfers count toward an allowance.
- Check port speed, packet limits and any abuse-response process.
- Run a canary transfer from the proposed region and monitor latency and loss.
Regions, latency and data residency
Contabo’s locations page describes five German data centers serving Europe, Africa and the Middle East, plus US East, West and Central regions. Hetzner’s published price table includes Germany, Finland, USA and Singapore, but product families are not necessarily available in every location. City-level choices and stock can change, so confirm the live region selector at checkout rather than relying on a static list.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPick geography in this order: legal or contractual residency, latency to the majority of users, proximity to dependent services, then price. A cheaper server on another continent can cost more in user experience and inter-region transfer. If you need disaster recovery, treat a second region as a separate cost and verify that the provider offers the storage, image and networking features your recovery plan requires.
How to test a region before committing
- List your top user and API locations and their latency targets.
- Deploy a temporary instance in each candidate region using the same operating system and application build.
- Measure median and tail request latency, packet loss, DNS resolution time and upload/download throughput from representative networks.
- Repeat tests during your busiest expected hours.
- Keep the results with the instance type and test date; a result from one plan does not automatically apply to another product family.
Availability, SLA language and remedies
Hetzner states: “We will make commercially reasonable efforts to ensure a monthly availability of 99.9% for every Cloud Server.” Its SLA measures availability per calendar month. Compensation applies only when measured downtime exceeds the threshold and is issued as Cloud Credit, subject to the SLA’s conditions and exclusions. A 99.9% target still permits roughly 43 minutes and 12 seconds of downtime in a 30-day month before the threshold is exceeded, and the credit remedy is not cash reimbursement or a guarantee that an incident will not occur.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
This establishes a documented Hetzner commitment for Cloud servers and vServers; it does not demonstrate better comparative uptime than Contabo. No equivalent Contabo SLA was established in the available material. If your contract requires a particular uptime percentage, service credit, response time or data-durability promise, read the provider’s current legal terms and confirm that your exact product is covered.
What to verify in any SLA
- How availability is measured and whether it is monthly, annual or calculated another way.
- Which components and products are included or excluded.
- How maintenance, network events, customer configuration and force-majeure incidents are treated.
- How you submit a claim, the deadline and the form of compensation.
- Whether credits are capped and whether they cover consequential losses (often they do not).
Which provider fits common workloads?
Small websites, prototypes and low-traffic APIs
Start with the smallest plan that meets memory and storage requirements in the region your users need. Compare the real monthly total after VAT and IPv4, then consider whether Contabo’s 24-month displayed term fits your runway. Hetzner’s CX23 example may be attractive on headline price, but its listed amount excludes VAT and IPv4 and is not a direct substitute for a Contabo allocation without matching resources.
High-memory applications
Contabo’s published upper example of 18 vCPU and 96 GB RAM makes it a candidate when a large listed allocation is the starting requirement. Confirm storage, port and fair-use details, and benchmark the application. Do not infer that the larger allocation is faster per core or has better disk latency.
Compute-heavy services and build pipelines
Compare the appropriate Hetzner product family with the Contabo plan that satisfies the same concurrency and memory floor. Run repeatable builds or application load tests on both. Record completion time, tail latency and throttling behavior; a nominal vCPU match is not enough.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Data-transfer-heavy services
Model egress peaks and abuse scenarios before choosing. Contabo’s unlimited label remains subject to fair-use conditions and possible throttling. Obtain Hetzner’s current traffic terms for the selected region and family, and include backup and replication traffic in the estimate.

Prioritize an available region that satisfies residency and latency requirements, then evaluate the SLA and support process. Hetzner’s documented 99.9% target may be useful for a contractual checklist, but its credit remedy does not replace application-level redundancy. Build health checks, backups and failover regardless of provider.
A practical benchmark and migration plan
- Freeze the specification. Write down vCPU, RAM, storage capacity and type, operating system, region, expected traffic and required uptime remedy.
- Build identical images. Use the same application version, database dataset, runtime settings and monitoring agents on each candidate.
- Warm the workload. Run enough traffic to fill caches and reach normal background jobs before collecting data.
- Measure user-visible metrics. Capture median and p95/p99 latency, error rate, throughput, CPU steal time, memory pressure, disk latency and network loss.
- Include failure exercises. Test restart recovery, snapshot restoration, backup duration and DNS or load-balancer failover.
- Repeat at peak. Run tests during the hours that resemble production and repeat on another day to detect noisy-neighbor effects.
- Compare cost per result. Divide the fully loaded recurring cost by the throughput or successful requests your application actually needs.
- Canary migration. Move a small percentage of traffic, monitor for at least one normal peak cycle and keep the original environment available for rollback.
Common comparison mistakes
- Comparing different terms: a 24-month displayed Contabo price is not equivalent to a flexible monthly Hetzner figure.
- Ignoring tax and IPv4: Hetzner’s cited prices exclude both; add them before deciding.
- Treating product names as specifications: CX23, CPX22 and Contabo VPS numbers do not prove equivalent CPU, storage or network performance.
- Reading unlimited as unconditional: Contabo’s fair-use language allows possible throttling for unusual or disruptive traffic.
- Assuming regional parity: available families, prices and cities differ by location. Confirm the live selector.
- Turning an SLA into a benchmark: a 99.9% target and Cloud Credit remedy describe a commitment, not comparative uptime or application reliability.
- Skipping exit planning: document image export, database dumps, DNS TTLs, backup restoration and a rollback route before production migration.
Decision framework: when each option is the better fit
| If your priority is… | Evidence-led direction | Conditions to verify |
|---|---|---|
| A large listed memory and vCPU allocation | Start by reviewing Contabo’s higher Cloud VPS tiers, including the published 18 vCPU/96 GB example. | 24-month commitment, storage and port details, fair-use traffic rules and benchmark results. |
| A clearly documented Cloud availability target | Hetzner has a published 99.9% monthly target with a defined Cloud Credit remedy. | Exact product coverage, exclusions, claim process and the fact that credits are not uninterrupted-service insurance. |
| Lowest predictable long-term cost | Calculate both providers’ total cost over your actual retention period. | VAT, IPv4, currency, term, renewal and traffic-related charges. |
| Specific European, US or Singapore placement | Shortlist regions shown by each provider, then verify live availability. | City, product-family availability, latency and data-residency requirements. |
| Performance-sensitive production software | Do not choose from the table alone; run an identical canary benchmark. | Same workload, peak-hour repetition, storage tests, network tests and rollback plan. |
Recommended way to make the final choice
Write a one-page requirements sheet and reject any plan that fails a hard requirement for region, memory, storage, traffic or contractual coverage. For the remaining candidates, calculate the fully loaded cost in one currency, including the actual term and all mandatory extras. Then run the same application test on the exact instance types. Choose the lowest-cost candidate that meets your measured latency, throughput, recovery and availability requirements—not the provider with the most attractive headline number.
Before placing an order, recheck Contabo’s current pricing, its live locations, Hetzner’s regional price table and the Cloud SLA. The cited figures and terms are current to the referenced 2026 pages, but providers can change prices, regions, allowances and policies.
