You can get a VPN working on a Samsung Galaxy either by installing your VPN provider’s Android app or by adding a VPN profile in Settings. The app is usually the simpler route; manual setup requires connection details and credentials from your VPN provider or your workplace or school administrator.
Choose the setup method that fits your VPN

Samsung says users connecting through a provider app do not need to follow its manual-profile instructions. App features and setup steps depend on the provider; Samsung does not identify a universally best service. Samsung’s VPN setup guide documents both options.
Set up a VPN with its Android app
- Choose a VPN service and get its official Android app through the provider’s current instructions.
- Open the app and follow its setup prompts. The app may request permission to create a VPN connection; review the prompt and continue only if you trust the provider and intended to connect.
- Use the app’s controls to connect or disconnect. For app-specific options, follow the provider’s instructions; steps and feature availability are not the same for every service.
Add a VPN profile manually in Samsung Settings
Use manual setup only when you have the required configuration from your provider or network administrator. Server addresses, protocol choices, usernames, passwords, and certificate requirements are specific to the connection and should not be guessed. Samsung’s consumer guide was published on 7 June 2022; it documents this route but notes that menu names and steps can vary by device and software version.
- Ask your VPN provider or workplace or school administrator for the profile details and credentials. If you do not know what a field means, ask them before continuing.
- On the Galaxy phone, open Settings > Connections > More connection settings > VPN. Some devices may label this area More networks. If you cannot find it, search Settings for VPN. Samsung US support also documents the manual path: Samsung: set up a VPN connection.
- Tap the three-dot menu or +, then choose Add VPN profile. The exact control can vary.
- Enter the values supplied for your connection and save the profile. Do not substitute sample or guessed values.
- Return to the VPN settings, select the profile, and connect. Android may ask for a username and password before you tap Connect; labels can differ on Samsung. See Google’s Android VPN instructions.
Disconnect, remove, or check a VPN connection
To disconnect or forget a saved VPN, open your phone’s VPN settings, select the connection, and choose the relevant control. Google’s general Android route is Settings > Network & internet > VPN; Samsung menus may be named differently, so search Settings for “VPN” if needed. Android’s guidance indicates a VPN status icon when a connection is active. If a profile belongs to an employer or school, check with its administrator before removing it.

Understand Always-on VPN and work profiles
Android provides an Always-on VPN option for supported configurations, but its availability depends on the device and setup. Google notes that when a VPN is configured through an app, the Always-on option may not appear in Android’s system VPN settings. Check the VPN settings on your Galaxy and the provider’s instructions rather than assuming every app or model exposes the control.
Android also supports VPN use limited to apps associated with a work profile. This is relevant to some managed work phones, not a required step for setting up a personal VPN.

When Knox or an administrator-managed setup applies
Samsung Knox documentation describes advanced enterprise VPN controls, including per-app, on-demand, device-wide, and always-on connections, as well as blocking traffic when a required VPN drops. These are management capabilities that can require compatible clients, organizational configuration, and Knox tools; they are not necessary for ordinary provider-app setup. If your organization manages the phone or VPN, follow its administrator’s instructions rather than trying to recreate its configuration yourself.
