Connect your modem, optical network terminal (ONT), or other internet source to the router jack labeled WAN or Internet. Connect computers, consoles, switches, and other wired devices to LAN ports. If a jack is labeled WAN/LAN, its role may need to be selected in the router’s settings before it works as the internet connection.

Which Ethernet port should the modem use?

Use the port marked WAN or Internet for the cable from your modem, ONT, or other upstream internet source. Use LAN ports for devices on your home network. The labels identify the ports’ roles; they do not, by themselves, tell you which port is fastest.

Check the labels beside the jacks or the port diagram in the manual for your exact router. Position, color, and speed are not reliable ways to identify a port across different models.

How to connect the cables

  1. Identify the ports. Read the labels on the router or consult its model-specific manual. Look for WAN, Internet, or a port explicitly marked WAN/LAN.
  2. Connect the internet source. Plug the Ethernet cable from your modem, ONT, or other internet source into the designated WAN/Internet port.
  3. Connect local devices. Plug computers, consoles, switches, and other wired clients into LAN ports.
  4. Assign a combined port if needed. If you are using a WAN/LAN port for the internet connection, set its role to WAN in the router interface, then connect the source cable to that same port. ASUS explicitly advises that the cable must be connected to the WAN port selected for configuration (ASUS setup guidance).

What if a port is labeled WAN/LAN?

A combined port can serve as an internet-facing WAN connection or as a local LAN port. The router’s configuration determines which role it has, so the software setting and physical cable connection must agree.

ASUS routers

Depending on the model and setup stage, ASUS documents choosing the port in Quick Internet Setup or under WAN > Dual WAN. Its instructions say to connect the network cable to the WAN port you intend to configure (ASUS 2.5G/10G WAN setup and troubleshooting, updated December 8, 2025).

Applicable NETGEAR Nighthawk models

For supported models, NETGEAR documents selecting WAN Preference > Multi-Gig Port when assigning a multi-gig port as WAN (NETGEAR Nighthawk setup instructions). This menu is not universal; use the instructions for your router model and firmware.

Why the fastest-looking jack may not be the right one

Port role and port speed are separate things. WAN or LAN describes what the router uses the port for; a rating such as 1 Gbps or 2.5 Gbps describes a supported link rate. A high-speed port may need to be assigned as WAN before it can serve as the internet connection.

Router layouts vary. For example, TP-Link lists the Archer AX55 Pro with one 2.5 Gbps WAN/LAN port, one 1 Gbps WAN/LAN port, and three gigabit LAN ports (TP-Link Archer AX55 Pro specifications). That is one model’s layout, not a general pattern to apply to other routers.

Why the router may show a slower connection than expected

A port’s maximum rate is only one part of the connection. The router, modem or other source device, ISP service, Ethernet cable, and connected equipment all affect the rate the link can negotiate or the internet speed you can receive. Check the router’s link status and the specifications of each device in the path before concluding that the port is faulty.

  • Confirm the selected role. If a combined jack is assigned as LAN, it will not act as the internet-facing WAN port until you change its role.
  • Check both ends of the link. The router and modem or other source device must support the rate you expect. A higher-rated router port cannot make an upstream device negotiate at a rate it does not support.
  • Check the service and client. The ISP plan affects internet throughput; a wired client and its network connection also need to support the intended rate.
  • Follow equipment-specific cable guidance. For its cited maximum 10G troubleshooting case, ASUS recommends Cat6 or above and says to check cable specifications. NETGEAR describes supported rates for its particular multi-gig ports, including backward compatibility. These are model-specific recommendations, not a blanket rule that all Ethernet connections require Cat6 (ASUS guidance; NETGEAR multi-gig port information).

For internet use, a faster WAN port helps only when the upstream device, ISP service, router, and connected path can use the higher rate. A faster LAN port can help with local transfers only when the other device and link also support it.

If the internet still does not work

If the source cable is in a LAN port on a standard router, moving it to the designated WAN/Internet port is the likely correction. If the router has no clearly designated WAN port, or the connection still fails, consult the router manual and your ISP’s setup instructions rather than guessing which jack to use.

Do not treat WAN or LAN link aggregation as a routine fix for choosing the wrong port. Aggregation is a separate configuration that requires compatible equipment; ASUS documents WAN aggregation and LAN aggregation as distinct functions for the GT-AX6000 (ASUS GT-AX6000 aggregation FAQ, updated September 22, 2023).
