Yes, some HP laptops can run three external monitors, but it depends on the laptop’s video outputs, graphics capability, and the displays’ resolution and refresh rate. A dock’s advertised maximum is not a guarantee for every connected laptop: HP says video support depends on the host notebook’s capability. Identify your exact model and verify its specifications before choosing a dock or adapters.
First, confirm what your HP laptop can drive
Find the exact laptop model, then check its official HP specifications for video-capable USB-C, Thunderbolt or USB4 ports, graphics/display limits, and supported resolutions. A USB-C connector’s shape alone does not mean it carries video. For the HP USB-C 100W G6 Dock, the host port must support DisplayPort Alt Mode, Thunderbolt 3 alt mode, or USB4 for full data and video functionality. See HP’s USB-C 100W G6 Dock specification.
Also decide whether “three monitors” means three external displays in addition to the laptop screen, or three screens total. HP’s specification for the USB-C/A Universal Dock G2 describes a three-4K-display configuration only for Thunderbolt or video-enabled USB-C notebooks, and that count includes the notebook screen. Check the wording of any display-count claim before treating it as three external monitors.

Use a multi-display dock
A compatible dock is usually the simplest way to connect several screens while keeping the laptop-to-desk connection to one cable. Compare the dock’s host connection, external-display count, supported display modes, physical outputs, and charging capability against your laptop and monitors.

| Dock | HP-stated display capability | Video outputs and conditions |
|---|---|---|
| HP USB-C 100W G6 Dock | Up to 3 external monitors; supported resolution and video depend on the host notebook. | Two DisplayPort 1.4 outputs and one HDMI 2.1 output. Host USB-C must support DisplayPort Alt Mode, Thunderbolt 3 alt mode, or USB4 for full data and video functionality. HP specification |
| HP Thunderbolt 4 100W G6 Dock | Up to 4 external displays, subject to host capability and connection mode. | Two DisplayPort 1.4 ports, one HDMI 2.1 port, and one Thunderbolt 4 port. HP describes direct HDMI/DisplayPort connections, USB-C-to-DisplayPort adapters, and compatible Thunderbolt daisy-chaining. HP specification |
| HP Thunderbolt G4 Dock | Up to 4 external displays, depending on notebook video capability. | HP specifies dual 4K at 60 Hz on DP 1.2 systems, and triple 4K at 60 Hz on DP 1.4 systems with DSC2. These are dock/host capability examples, not a promise for every HP laptop. HP specification |
HP’s Thunderbolt 4 100W G6 guidance lists three QHD displays at 120 Hz in specified host and port configurations. Host type and how displays are connected affect the available modes; HP notes that DisplayPort 1.4 with Display Stream Compression (DSC) is required for optimal performance. Confirm the precise combination of laptop, dock, monitors, cables, resolution, and refresh rate in HP’s Thunderbolt 4 100W G6 dock capability guidance rather than assuming a particular mode will work.
Use DisplayPort daisy-chaining only when the whole path supports it
Daisy-chaining can reduce the number of cables running back to the laptop, but it requires compatible video output and monitor inputs and outputs. HP’s monitor guidance says DisplayPort chaining requires DisplayPort 1.2 or later with MST support. Each monitor in the chain needs a suitable output for the next display. HP also says macOS supports only Thunderbolt MST. Because that guidance concerns supported HP monitors, verify the ports and capabilities of other monitor models individually.

Check dock port behavior with non-Thunderbolt hosts
HP documents a limitation on Thunderbolt G4 and G6 docks: a USB-C monitor connected to the dock’s downstream Thunderbolt port may show no image when the dock is connected to a non-Thunderbolt host while multiple displays are connected. HP recommends using a Thunderbolt/USB4 host connection for full display capability, or using another available dock USB-C port where applicable. See HP’s USB-C monitor support advisory (document version 2, January 9, 2025).
Set up the three displays
- Identify the laptop: Find its exact model and check HP’s specifications for video-capable ports, graphics/display limits, and supported resolutions.
- Define the display count: Confirm whether you need three external monitors alongside the laptop screen or three screens total.
- Match the dock to the host: For a USB-C dock, verify video support such as DisplayPort Alt Mode on the laptop’s USB-C port. For a Thunderbolt configuration, verify compatible Thunderbolt or USB4 support and the dock’s host requirements.
- Plan the display modes and connections: Check the dock’s specified outputs and the supported resolution and refresh rate for your exact number of monitors. Select cables or adapters to match the verified dock output and monitor input; there is no single cable choice established for every setup.
- Connect and arrange the displays: Connect each monitor to a documented dock output, then use your operating system’s display settings to select a display mode and arrange the screens. The exact controls depend on the operating system and version.
- For a daisy-chain: Verify MST or Thunderbolt support across the laptop-to-dock path and the monitor ports before relying on the chain.
Why three monitors may not work as expected
- The USB-C port carries data but not video: Confirm DisplayPort Alt Mode, Thunderbolt, or USB4 capability in the laptop’s specifications.
- The dock’s maximum is mistaken for the laptop’s maximum: HP states that dock video support depends on host notebook capability; resolution and refresh rate also vary with connection mode.
- The advertised count includes the laptop screen: Check whether a display count refers to external screens or all screens, including the built-in panel.
- A monitor is connected through an unsupported port or chain: Check the dock’s connection guidance and confirm monitor MST, DisplayPort, or Thunderbolt support as relevant.
- A non-Thunderbolt host is used with a downstream Thunderbolt port: On the documented G4/G6 setup, a USB-C monitor on that port may not display when multiple screens are connected.
What can be confirmed before buying
Without the laptop model, operating system, monitor models, and target resolution and refresh rate, no particular dock configuration can be guaranteed. HP’s stated dock capacities are useful starting points, but the deciding check is whether the exact laptop and chosen connection mode support the required number of external screens at the modes you need.
