Spectrum WiFi can use both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. On current Advanced WiFi and WiFi 6 routers, the bands typically share one network name, and the router steers devices automatically. Older Spectrum routers may show separate network names for each band. Some Spectrum WiFi 6E equipment also supports 6 GHz.
How to tell which bands your Spectrum router supports
The router model determines which bands are available and whether they appear as one network or separate networks. Check the model on the equipment label, then use Spectrum’s equipment manuals index to find its documentation. Spectrum’s documented WiFi 6E router supports 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz; that does not mean every Spectrum router includes 6 GHz.
What is the difference between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz?
| Band | Typical tradeoff in Spectrum’s guidance | What it means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4 GHz | Broader coverage | Can be useful for devices farther from the router or devices that only support 2.4 GHz. |
| 5 GHz | Faster speeds for newer devices at closer range | Can suit a compatible device near the router when speed is the priority. |
These are general characteristics, not a guarantee of the speed or coverage you will get in a particular home. Walls, distance, interference, the router, and the client device all affect performance. Spectrum’s setup guidance describes the general tradeoff in its self-install instructions.
Why do I see one WiFi name instead of two?
Many current Spectrum Advanced WiFi and WiFi 6 routers use one SSID for both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. A shared name does not mean the router has only one band: compatible devices connect to the same named network, and the router selects an available band. Spectrum explains this arrangement in its Advanced WiFi 6 setup instructions and Advanced Home WiFi guidance.

Older-generation Spectrum routers may instead broadcast separate names, often with the band indicated in the network name. If you see two names, choose the one matching the band your device supports. The router label and model-specific manual can help identify the right network and credentials.
How do I connect a 2.4 GHz-only smart device?
First check the device’s setup instructions. If your router uses one shared network name, try connecting the phone and smart device to that same network and follow the device’s pairing process. Some 2.4 GHz-only devices can be set up even when the phone is connected to a shared SSID; others require the setup phone itself to be on 2.4 GHz.

For supported Advanced WiFi routers, a verified Spectrum employee moderator described a temporary option that forces the setup phone onto 2.4 GHz for 30 minutes. The feature and controls can depend on the router model and current app interface, so check Spectrum’s current app or account instructions for your equipment before relying on it. The model-specific guidance appears in this Spectrum Community discussion.

- Dual Band WiFi Extender: Up to 44% more bandwidth than single band N300 WiFi extenders. Boost Internet WiFi coverage up to 1200 square feet and connects up to 30 devices(2.4GHz: 300Mbps; 5GHz: 433Mbps)
Can I manually switch a device between bands?
It depends on the router. On a current unified-SSID setup, you generally select the network name rather than a band; the router steers compatible clients. Older routers with separate SSIDs may let you choose by connecting to the desired network. Do not assume that every Spectrum router offers a manual band selector in its app.
On WiFi 6E equipment, 6 GHz is an additional band, but a device must support 6 GHz to use it. Devices that do not support it can still connect using bands available to them.
