To connect speakers to an LG Smart TV, use a connection supported by both devices: HDMI ARC/eARC, optical digital audio, Bluetooth, or—on some models—a headphone output. Check the TV’s port labels and model manual first, then select that speaker as the TV’s sound output. LG notes that available ports and menu paths vary by model and webOS version.
Choose a connection your TV and speaker both support
Look at the labels beside the TV’s ports and check the manuals for both devices. An ordinary HDMI input does not necessarily support ARC; use the port specifically labeled ARC or eARC. Likewise, do not assume a 3.5 mm jack is a headphone output: LG says some similar-looking ports are intended for diagnostics or RS232 control. See LG’s model and connection guidance.

These options are not interchangeable in every setup. ARC can also support TV-remote power and volume control for a connected soundbar, according to LG’s ARC instructions. Optical is a wired alternative when both devices have matching ports. Bluetooth avoids an audio cable. Check both devices’ specifications rather than assuming a connection supports a particular audio format.

- Confirm that the TV has an HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC and that the soundbar has a TV ARC/eARC port.
- Connect those two labeled ports with an HDMI cable. LG’s model-specific owner manual specifies a certified HDMI cable for ARC.
- If necessary, set the soundbar’s input or function to ARC.
- On the TV, open Sound Out or Output Speaker and choose HDMI ARC. The exact menu wording varies by model.
A soundbar may display “ARC” or “E-ARC” when the connection is active. LG describes ARC as sending the TV’s audio signal to the soundbar’s TV eARC/ARC port over HDMI in its ARC support guide.

Connect over optical audio
- Connect the TV’s optical digital audio output to the soundbar or receiver’s optical input.
- Select the optical input or source on the soundbar or receiver.
- Set the TV’s Sound Out to Optical or Optical Out Device.
Menu steps depend on the webOS generation. LG’s optical setup instructions give examples including All Settings > Sound > Sound Out > Optical on webOS 5.0 or older; on webOS 6.0 or 22, the process includes an additional Use Wired Speaker step. Follow the instructions for your TV rather than treating either path as universal.
Match the optical plug to the port and insert it without forcing it. LG warns that excessive force can damage the terminal.

Pair a Bluetooth speaker
- Put the speaker into Bluetooth pairing mode.
- Open the TV’s Sound Out settings and choose the Bluetooth device list.
- Select the speaker, then confirm that the TV’s sound output is set to Bluetooth.
LG lists different menu paths for webOS 26 or later, webOS 6.0 or later, and webOS 5.0 or earlier in its Bluetooth connection instructions. Use the path that matches your TV’s software. LG’s note that two compatible Bluetooth headphones or earbuds can play at once applies to headphones and earbuds; it does not establish support for two Bluetooth speakers.

If the speaker does not appear, it may have reconnected automatically to a phone or tablet it was paired with before. Turn Bluetooth off on that device, return the speaker to pairing mode, and search again on the TV.

Use a headphone output only if the model supports it
LG says a headphone output is not common on its TVs. Check the port label and the exact model manual before connecting anything; a 3.5 mm port may instead be for diagnostics or RS232 control. LG’s Easy TV Connect Guide says some newer webOS 3.0 TVs support headphone output and internal TV speakers simultaneously, but that feature must be confirmed for the specific model.

- Check the TV output. In Sound Out or Output Speaker, select the external device rather than the internal TV speakers.
- Check the speaker input. Set the soundbar or receiver to the connected HDMI ARC, optical, or Bluetooth source.
- Reseat wired connections. Confirm both ends of the HDMI or optical cable are secure. Do not force an optical plug.
- For Bluetooth, pair again. Verify the speaker is in pairing mode and that the TV is sending audio to Bluetooth. If it has paired with a phone or tablet, turn Bluetooth off on that device while reconnecting.
- Check mute and the cable. Make sure the TV and speaker are not muted. If a wired connection remains silent, try a known-good cable.
- Recheck compatibility. Confirm that the exact TV and speaker models support the selected connection.
These checks follow LG’s connection guidance; port support and menu labels can differ among models and software versions.
