Samsung My Files can send files to a destination called Network storage, but it does not create a shared folder on your PC or NAS. You need a reachable host with a shared folder and an account that has permission to use it. Samsung documents the file-transfer workflow; the manual SMB connection steps below come from a Samsung Members community post and may differ by device or app version.

What Network storage means in My Files

My Files is pre-installed on most Galaxy devices and manages files stored on the phone and in other supported locations, such as cloud services or an SD card. Samsung’s support instructions also list Network storage as a destination when copying or moving files. The exact labels and available options can vary by model and software version. Samsung: How to use Samsung My Files App · Samsung: Low storage space error appears on Samsung phone or tablet

In practice, network storage is a shared location on a computer or NAS that the phone can reach over a network. My Files can transfer items to a share that already exists; it cannot configure the PC or NAS share for you.

Copy or move files to Network storage

Samsung’s documented transfer flow is straightforward. On your Galaxy device:

  1. Open My Files and browse to the file or files you want to transfer.
  2. Select the item or items, then choose Copy or Move.
  3. Choose Network storage as the destination.
  4. Browse to the desired folder, or create a folder from the destination flow if needed, then tap Copy here or Move here.

Copy leaves the original in place and creates another copy at the destination. Move transfers the item and removes it from its original location. If the transfer fails, check the destination before deleting or retrying so you do not mistake a partial transfer for a completed one.

Connect to a PC or NAS share

Samsung’s official pages cited above document Network storage as a transfer destination, but do not provide a current SMB setup walkthrough or a protocol-compatibility list. The following connection path is version-sensitive community guidance, not a Samsung compatibility guarantee.

Before adding the connection

  • Set up a shared folder on the PC or NAS and ensure the device is online.
  • Use an account that has permission to access that share. A Samsung Members reply cautions against using the primary PC login; a dedicated account limited to the required access is preferable.
  • Have the server’s local IP address or host name, share details, username, and password available. Host-side sharing steps depend on the Windows version or NAS vendor, so consult that vendor’s documentation.

Community-reported My Files steps

  1. Open My Files and select Network storage.
  2. Tap the plus icon, choose Network drive (SMB), then select Add Manually.
  3. Enter the server address, port, username, password, and a display name, then save or connect.

The post uses port 445 and describes connecting to a Windows shared folder or NAS. Treat that port and menu path as details from the community post, not universal settings: current app versions and devices may present different options. If the share will not connect

These are basic checks inferred from the connection details in the community post, not Samsung-certified diagnostics:

  • Confirm the PC or NAS is powered on and the shared folder is enabled.
  • Check that the phone and host can reach each other on the network, and that the entered address and share details are correct.
  • Verify the username and password, and confirm the account has permission to the shared folder.
  • If the app’s labels or options do not match the community instructions, check your device’s current My Files version and Samsung support information rather than assuming every Galaxy device supports the same connection method.

Local share or cloud destination?

A local SMB share and a cloud service are different destinations. A PC or NAS share depends on the host being online and reachable on the network. Cloud storage uses an account-based service and may be more practical when you need files away from home. Samsung documents copying or moving files from My Files to OneDrive: select the file, choose Move or Copy, select OneDrive, and choose a destination folder. Availability and access depend on the account and service. Samsung India: Using OneDrive on my Samsung device

An existing shared PC may be enough if you only need occasional access and it stays available when required. A NAS is optional, not a prerequisite of My Files; if you choose one, check its documentation for SMB sharing support. A self-hosted share gives you control over the host and access configuration, while a cloud destination provides access through a service account.

Remote access and security

A private LAN share does not become reachable over the public internet just because My Files can use mobile data. Remote access requires appropriate network configuration. In the Samsung Members discussion, a community moderator warned against exposing SMB port 445 directly to the internet and suggested a VPN: “This is not secure because you need to open port 445 on WAN. I am not recommend. Maybe setup a VPN connection between your router and phone, then you can access the shared folder in this way.” This is community guidance, not a Samsung security bulletin. Do not forward port 445 to the internet; consult your router or NAS documentation for supported secure remote-access options.
