To connect an Orbi mesh system to a router or ISP gateway that already provides WiFi and routing, run Orbi in Access Point (AP) mode and connect a LAN port on the existing router to Orbi’s Internet port. If you want Orbi to do the routing instead, put the ISP gateway into bridge mode when supported and use Orbi in router mode. The right choice depends on which device should route your home network and which Orbi features you need.
Choose router mode or AP mode
A modem may only connect your home to the internet, while a modem-router or ISP gateway also routes traffic and often broadcasts WiFi. Check the device’s model or ask your provider if you are unsure which you have.
| Setup | Existing device | Orbi setting | Best fit | Main tradeoff |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bridge the gateway | Enable bridge mode if the ISP gateway supports it | Router mode | You want Orbi to provide router features and the gateway can be bridged | Bridge-mode availability and steps depend on the ISP and gateway. Follow the provider’s instructions. |
| Keep gateway routing | Leave routing active; NETGEAR advises turning off gateway WiFi if bridge mode is unavailable and you use AP mode | AP mode | The gateway must remain the router, or bridge mode is unavailable | Some Orbi features are unavailable in AP mode, and Orbi app management is not available according to NETGEAR’s Orbi AP instructions. |
NETGEAR’s guidance is to use router mode when the modem does not route, and AP mode when the existing modem or gateway already routes. If your ISP gateway supports bridge mode and you want Orbi’s full router features, NETGEAR recommends bridging the gateway and using Orbi in router mode. If bridge mode is unavailable, NETGEAR directs users to turn off gateway WiFi and use Orbi in AP mode. NETGEAR’s Orbi support resources provide model-specific instructions; gateway controls vary by provider.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Connect Orbi in AP mode to a working router
Use these steps when the existing router or gateway will continue to handle routing. NETGEAR’s interface labels can differ across models, so use the support page for your exact Orbi if the menu path is different.

- Confirm the existing router or gateway is working and will remain responsible for routing.
- Connect an Ethernet cable from a LAN port on that router or gateway to the Orbi router’s Internet port. Check your model’s port labels before connecting. NETGEAR documents this LAN-to-Internet connection for Orbi AP mode.
- Connect a computer or phone to the Orbi network, open a browser, and go to
orbilogin.com. - Sign in with the administrator credentials already set for the Orbi system.
- Open ADVANCED > Advanced Setup > Router / AP Mode, select AP Mode, and choose Get dynamically from existing router unless you have a specific reason and the experience to configure a fixed IP address.
- Apply the change. Orbi’s address may change as it switches modes, so reconnect to the interface if necessary. NETGEAR says the Orbi app cannot manage the system in AP mode.
If both devices are broadcasting WiFi, consider NETGEAR’s guidance to turn off the gateway’s WiFi when using AP mode because bridge mode is unavailable. If you need the gateway’s wireless network, follow your provider’s configuration guidance rather than assuming both networks will behave as one seamless mesh.
What changes in AP mode
AP mode lets Orbi provide WiFi access while the existing router remains in charge of routing. It also means some router functions are unavailable. NETGEAR lists guest network, website blocking, VPN service, and remote management among the features disabled in AP mode, and says NETGEAR Armor is unsupported in AP mode. Check the documentation for your specific model and firmware for the current feature list.

NETGEAR Support describes the role this way: “In access point (AP) mode, your NETGEAR router acts as a gateway for other devices to connect to.” NETGEAR’s router-mode and AP-mode explanation discusses the distinction and the associated feature limits.
Setting up a new Orbi system is a different process
If you are installing Orbi for the first time and there is no router already handling the network, NETGEAR’s standard setup connects the Orbi router to the modem with the supplied Ethernet cable. Power the modem and Orbi, wait for startup, complete the setup flow, and then add the satellites. Follow the placement and pairing instructions for your model; room layout and equipment affect where a satellite should go. NETGEAR’s Orbi support pages provide setup material for individual systems.

NETGEAR’s Nighthawk Mesh WiFi 6 setup is a separate product-family procedure: its guide connects the modem to the mesh router’s yellow Internet port and has the satellite sync initially in the router’s room. Do not assume Nighthawk and Orbi setup screens, ports, or satellite compatibility are interchangeable. See NETGEAR’s Nighthawk Mesh WiFi 6 instructions for that product family.
Use an extender or another Orbi satellite?
For a single weak-signal area, a NETGEAR WiFi range extender can connect to an existing router. NETGEAR offers WPS setup when the router supports it, as well as app or browser setup. Its guidance is to place a configured extender about halfway between the router and the weak-signal area, while keeping it within the router’s range. Consult the instructions for the extender model you own. NETGEAR’s extender setup guide describes these setup options and placement advice.

An extender and an Orbi satellite are not interchangeable parts of a mesh system. NETGEAR says an extender can suit limited needs, such as stationary, low-bandwidth devices, but recommends a satellite compatible with the existing Orbi system for broader coverage and seamless roaming. Confirm compatibility against your exact Orbi model before adding a satellite. NETGEAR’s Orbi-and-extender guidance explains the distinction.
Some NETGEAR extenders can also operate as access points over Ethernet rather than repeating WiFi wirelessly. When the model supports this, the Ethernet cable connects to a LAN port on the main router; the setup option and labels vary. See NETGEAR’s access-point setup information for extenders and confirm support for your model.

Troubleshoot a failed connection or missing feature
- No internet after switching to AP mode: Check that the cable runs from the existing router’s LAN port to Orbi’s Internet port and that you applied the AP-mode setting. Reconnect to the Orbi interface if its address changed. As a general troubleshooting check, confirm that the existing router is providing routing and address assignment.
- Orbi’s app or a router feature is missing: Check whether Orbi is in AP mode. NETGEAR documents feature restrictions in that mode, including unsupported Armor and unavailable app management in its Orbi AP instructions.
- You cannot find the stated menu: Menu names and setup behavior vary by model. Consult the support page or manual for the exact system rather than assuming another Orbi or Nighthawk path applies.
- The gateway still broadcasts WiFi: If you chose AP mode because the gateway cannot be bridged, NETGEAR advises turning off gateway WiFi. Use your ISP’s instructions for changing gateway settings.
NETGEAR’s published Orbi router/AP explanation, AP-mode steps, and related support pages show update dates of July 7, 2025; its WiFi extender setup guide shows April 17, 2026. Firmware, interfaces, ISP controls, and model availability can change, so check the current instructions for your equipment.
