Yes: a compatible old phone can stream music to an existing stereo. Connect the phone’s USB output to a USB digital-to-analog converter (DAC), then connect the DAC’s analog output to an available stereo input. Before buying anything, check that the phone can act as a USB host, that it can power the DAC or has a suitable powered hub, and that the DAC’s output matches the stereo’s input.

The title’s $10 price and “best speaker” judgment are not verified by the available technical sources, so they should not be treated as a typical cost or a proven sound-quality result. The setup itself is straightforward when the connections are compatible.

How the phone-to-stereo signal path works

Music played on the phone travels as digital audio over USB to the DAC. The DAC converts that signal to analog audio, which the stereo can receive through a line input. The Android Open Source Project’s USB digital audio documentation describes the conversion this way: “Similarly, the host sends a digital audio signal over USB protocol to the peripheral, where a digital-to-analog converter (DAC) converts and presents to an analog output terminal.”

The full chain is phone USB output → compatible USB DAC → stereo analog input. If the DAC has a 3.5 mm output and the stereo has a pair of RCA line inputs, a 3.5 mm-to-dual-RCA cable can make the final connection. Not every DAC has the same output connector, so check its specifications before choosing a cable.

Check these three compatibility points first

1. The phone must support USB host audio

A USB connection is not enough by itself: the phone must be able to act as the USB host and send audio to the DAC. Android’s official documentation says Android 5.0 (API level 21) and later support a subset of USB Audio Class 1 host-mode features. It describes PCM audio support and supported sample rates and mono or stereo channel counts, but that is not a guarantee that every handset, operating-system build, or DAC combination will work.

Android says compatible USB audio playback is routed automatically according to its audio policy. If playback does not switch to the DAC after connection, verify the exact phone and DAC compatibility rather than assuming that the USB connector is defective.

  • Plug and Play: No driver is required, just plug and play. USB bus-powered, no external power is required for this convenient sound card. *Note:Supports regular headphones with a resistance of less than 50 ohms, but does not support high-resistance headphones

2. The DAC must connect to the phone and receive enough power

Match the DAC’s USB connector to the phone. A USB-C phone may connect directly to a compatible DAC. A phone with micro-USB may require a USB On-The-Go (OTG) adapter or cable so it can act as host. Schiit’s Android connection guidance notes that some phone-and-DAC combinations may also need a powered USB hub because the phone may not supply enough power.

For a USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter, confirm that the adapter contains a DAC and supports the phone’s digital USB audio output. The plug’s shape alone does not establish that it can perform digital-to-analog conversion.

Works seamlessly with iPhones (USB C interface version), iPads, MacBooks, Android phones, laptops, desktops, and car stereos. Great for music, calls, livestreams, and content creation.

3. The DAC output must match a stereo input

Look at the labels on the stereo’s available inputs—such as AUX or LINE—and identify whether they use RCA sockets or another connector. Then check the DAC’s analog output. For a DAC with a 3.5 mm mini-jack output and a stereo with RCA line inputs, use a 3.5 mm-to-dual-RCA cable. Audioengine documents this type of mini-jack-to-stereo-system connection; Schiit also describes a 1/8-inch-to-dual-RCA cable for analog connections.

Use a line input rather than a phono input. A headphone output and a DAC’s line-level output are not identical: Schiit notes that a headphone output may be lower in output than a typical line-level source. Set the stereo volume low for the first playback, then raise it gradually.

Set it up in this order

  1. Identify the stereo input. Find an unused AUX, LINE, or other suitable line input and note its connector type.
  2. Identify the DAC’s analog output. Confirm whether it is 3.5 mm, RCA, or another connector, then choose a cable that matches both ends.
  3. Confirm the phone’s USB port and host capability. Check the phone maker’s documentation or the exact phone-and-DAC compatibility guidance. For older micro-USB phones, check whether an OTG adapter is needed.
  4. Connect the USB side. Attach the DAC to the phone, adding an appropriate powered hub if the combination requires more USB power than the phone can provide.
  5. Connect the analog side. Run the DAC output to the stereo’s selected line input.
  6. Select the input and test playback. Choose that input on the stereo, start audio on the phone, and bring the volume up gradually.

USB DAC or the phone’s headphone jack?

If the phone has an analog headphone jack, it may be possible to connect that output directly to the stereo with a suitable cable. An external USB DAC is another route when the phone lacks a headphone jack or when the setup calls for a USB audio connection. Neither route is a universal sound-quality winner; compatibility, output level, connectors, and the stereo’s available inputs determine which is practical.

Check Phone headphone output USB DAC
Phone connection Requires a working analog headphone jack. Requires USB host audio support and a compatible connection; some setups need OTG or a powered hub.
Analog output Phone’s headphone output; Schiit notes it may have lower output than a typical line-level source. Depends on the DAC’s output connector and level; verify its specifications.
Stereo connection Use a cable that matches the phone output and stereo line input. Match the DAC output to the stereo input; a 3.5 mm-to-dual-RCA cable works when those are the respective connectors.
Sound-quality conclusion The cited connection guidance does not establish a universal audible advantage for either method.

What the $10 claim does—and does not—establish

The available sources establish that USB DAC adapters and the needed cable categories exist, but they do not verify a current $10 price, a specific DAC model, or the phone-and-stereo combination behind the title’s first-person claim. Prices and availability can vary, so check current listings and the exact product specifications. Do not assume that the cheapest adapter will work with a particular phone merely because it has the right-shaped connector.

Nor do the Android compatibility specifications demonstrate that a USB DAC will sound better than the phone’s headphone output. They describe supported audio behavior, not a listening comparison. Whether the result suits you depends on the complete system and your own listening preferences.
