To connect a subwoofer’s high-level input, run the specified speaker-level cable from your amplifier’s speaker outputs to the subwoofer’s high-level input—with the system switched off and only after checking both manuals for the correct terminals. This connection is not an RCA connection. If your subwoofer has RCA inputs only, use a compatible speaker-level-to-line-level adapter; never connect speaker outputs directly to RCA inputs.

First, identify the outputs and inputs you have

A high-level, or speaker-level, input lets a powered subwoofer take its signal from an amplifier’s speaker outputs. It receives the program signal being sent to the main speakers. An RCA line-level input is different: it expects a much lower-level signal, so speaker wire cannot be connected to it directly.

Check the labels and connection diagrams on both components. The right connection depends on the amplifier’s available outputs, the subwoofer’s available inputs, and whether the system is for stereo listening, surround sound, or both.

  • Amplifier speaker outputs and a compatible subwoofer high-level input: use the direct high-level connection specified by the manufacturers.
  • Amplifier speaker outputs and RCA inputs only on the subwoofer: use a suitable speaker-level-to-line-level adapter, following its wiring instructions.
  • A compatible line-level or preamp output: connect it to the subwoofer’s line-level input as directed by the equipment manuals.
  • A surround receiver’s dedicated subwoofer output: connect it to the subwoofer’s compatible LFE or line input, usually with a subwoofer cable.

A dedicated receiver subwoofer output is not the same as a pair of speaker outputs. Denon’s HEOS Link HS2 instructions, for example, direct users to connect its SUB WOOFER output to an input on a powered subwoofer or subwoofer amplifier. Check your own receiver and subwoofer labels and manuals rather than assuming the same routing applies to every setup.

Choose the connection that fits your system

Connection path Use it when What connects Important qualification
Direct high-level The powered subwoofer has a compatible high-level input and the amplifier has suitable speaker outputs. Amplifier speaker terminals to the subwoofer’s high-level input, using the specified cable. Terminal assignments depend on the amplifier and subwoofer. A Speakon lead is not an RCA cable, and its pinout is not universal.
Speaker-level adapter to RCA The amplifier has speaker outputs but the powered subwoofer accepts only RCA line-level input. Speaker outputs to the adapter’s input; adapter RCA outputs to the subwoofer’s RCA inputs. The adapter and amplifier instructions must match, especially for differential or bridged outputs.
Low-level RCA A compatible line-level, preamp, or subwoofer output is available and the subwoofer accepts it. RCA output to the subwoofer’s line-level input. Confirm whether the source is stereo line level or a dedicated, bass-managed subwoofer output.
LFE or receiver subwoofer output A surround receiver or processor and subwoofer provide compatible subwoofer/LFE connections. Receiver subwoofer output to the subwoofer’s LFE or compatible line input. Bass-management settings and input behavior vary by model.

High-level is one valid option, not a universal upgrade or requirement. REL recommends it for its products when compatible speaker outputs are available; that is manufacturer guidance for those products, not a rule for every subwoofer. REL also describes low-level connections for certain setups where speaker outputs are unavailable, including some active-speaker, TV, or computer systems, and LFE for surround sound. Some applicable REL models support high-level or low-level for stereo alongside LFE for surround; confirm that behavior in the exact model manual before combining inputs.

Check amplifier topology before wiring

Do not assume a speaker terminal marked negative or black is ground. In a conventional grounded amplifier, the negative terminal may be at ground potential. In differential, bridged, and some Class D amplifiers, both speaker terminals can be actively driven; a negative terminal may be a live output. Connecting a subwoofer lead or adapter to it as though it were ground can be incorrect and may risk equipment damage.

Manufacturer instructions are product-specific. REL warns that its black high-level lead must not be attached to the black binding post on some Class D and differential amplifiers. SVS likewise cautions against connecting differential amplifier negative terminals to its SoundPath adapter and gives separate instructions for the adapter’s signal reference. Do not transfer one manufacturer’s wiring diagram to another amplifier or adapter. If the output topology or required reference point is unclear, stop and get model-specific guidance before connecting anything.

Prepare safely before changing speaker wiring

  1. Find the exact model manuals. Check the amplifier’s output topology and the subwoofer’s input diagram. Confirm that the intended connection is supported by both manufacturers.
  2. Switch off the system. Turn off the amplifier and subwoofer before disconnecting or changing wires. REL’s Serie T/i operating instructions expressly call for switching off the system before disconnecting wires.
  3. Use the correct input and cable. Connect only to the input identified for high-level or speaker-level use. Some subwoofers use a proprietary or specified connector; a Neutrik Speakon socket and its pinout, as described for REL Serie T/i models, do not establish a universal standard.
  4. Secure the conductors. Keep bare wire short, tighten terminals securely, and check for loose strands. A stray strand touching another terminal can cause a short; REL’s connection walkthrough also cautions that stripped conductors can fray or split.
  5. Recheck the diagram before powering up. Verify each wire’s destination, polarity, and reference point against the exact equipment manuals. Do not guess based on wire color alone.

Conventional grounded-amplifier example: a REL connection

For the standard REL Class A/B hookup described by REL, the red lead goes to the amplifier’s right positive speaker output, the yellow lead to the left positive speaker output, and the black lead to a convenient amplifier ground output. The Speakon connector then plugs into the subwoofer’s high-level input. REL’s Serie T/i manual maps red and yellow to right and left positive and black to a main speaker black terminal on one channel, not both.

If the subwoofer has RCA inputs only

Do not connect amplifier speaker outputs directly to the subwoofer’s RCA inputs. Speaker-level voltage is much higher than an RCA line-level input expects, and SVS warns that a direct connection can damage the subwoofer amplifier.

A speaker-level-to-line-level adapter is designed to accept the speaker signal and provide a reduced-level RCA signal for the subwoofer. Connect the amplifier outputs to the adapter input and the adapter’s RCA outputs to the subwoofer, following the adapter’s own wiring diagram. Confirm compatibility with the amplifier’s topology: an adapter intended for conventional outputs may not be suitable for differential or bridged wiring.

Set the subwoofer after making the connection

Once the wiring is verified and the system is on, adjust the subwoofer’s crossover or low-pass control and level so bass integrates with the main speakers. The correct settings depend on the speakers, subwoofer, source, and any receiver bass management; there is no single crossover value or level that applies to every system.

SVS suggests looking up the main speakers’ low-frequency extension as a starting point for the subwoofer low-pass setting, matching gain, then listening and fine-tuning for a smooth blend. Its suggested slope starting points differ for sealed and ported speaker designs, so treat them as SVS guidance for the setup it describes, not universal settings. Controls can also behave differently by input: the REL Serie T/i manual says its high-level crossover is engaged while its LFE path bypasses the normal crossover. Check the manual for your model before adjusting controls or receiver bass management.
