To use a PS4 DualShock 4 controller on a Windows PC, connect it with a compatible, data-capable Micro-USB cable. Windows may detect it automatically, but some games need Steam Input or DS4Windows to accept its controls. If the controller charges but does not appear on the PC, try a cable that carries data before changing software.
How to connect a PS4 controller to a PC with USB
- Connect the DualShock 4 directly to the PC with a compatible Micro-USB cable. Sony lists this as a supported PC connection method in its PlayStation controller connection guidance.
- Wait a few seconds for Windows to detect the controller. Microsoft says Windows 11 automatically detects many USB-connected controllers and installs the necessary drivers.
- Check that Windows or Steam receives input before launching a game. Microsoft recommends testing the controller in Windows device settings or Steam.
- If the test registers button and stick input but a game does not, check that game’s controller settings. Try Steam Input or DS4Windows if needed; some PlayStation-controller and game combinations require an input-mapping layer for full compatibility.
Why does the controller charge but not connect?
A lit controller or charging indicator does not prove the cable carries data. DS4Windows’ USB detection troubleshooting identifies charge-only Micro-USB cables as a possible cause when a controller is not detected.
- Try a known data-capable Micro-USB cable.
- Connect directly to another USB port on the PC rather than changing drivers or installing remapping software first.
- Test detection again in Windows or Steam.
If Windows registers the controller but one game does not, the cable is probably not the issue; check the game’s controller support and input settings.

Do you need DS4Windows?
Not necessarily. Windows may detect the controller, and some games accept its input without additional software. For games that do not work with the controller directly, Microsoft identifies Steam Input and DS4Windows as possible compatibility options. DS4Windows is third-party software, and its behavior can vary by release; use it only when the Windows or Steam test shows that the controller is detected but the game still needs an input-mapping layer.

Wired USB or a wireless connection?
USB is the direct choice when you want to play with a cable. Sony also documents Bluetooth and its dedicated USB wireless adaptor as connection options. Bluetooth requires a Bluetooth-capable PC; the Sony adaptor is an optional accessory for wireless use, not a requirement for a wired setup. The cited official guidance does not establish that one connection method is universally faster or more reliable than another.

What to check if it still does not work
- No detection in Windows or Steam: test a data-capable Micro-USB cable and a different USB port.
- Detection works, but a game gets no input: review the game’s controller settings and try Steam Input or DS4Windows if appropriate.
- Using a version of Windows other than Windows 11: Microsoft’s automatic-detection guidance cited here is for Windows 11. Check the current Sony support page and the game’s documentation for your configuration.
