To use a DVD recorder with a smart TV, connect a compatible TV signal source to the recorder’s tuner or recording input, then connect the recorder’s output to a TV input for playback. Whether recording works depends on the signal source and the recorder’s inputs; an HDMI cable from the recorder to the TV carries the recorder’s picture and sound to the TV, not a smart-TV app back to the recorder.

Check what you want to record and which connections your devices support

Start with the source of the program: an antenna, a cable feed, or a cable or satellite set-top box. Then compare that source’s connection and signal with the recorder’s tuner or recording inputs. A DVD recorder needs a compatible tuner or input to record; having a TV connection alone does not make the recorder able to capture that TV’s picture.

Ports and tuner capabilities vary by model. Check the manuals for the TV, recorder, and, if applicable, set-top box before buying cables or recordable discs. Sony’s connection guidance notes that the appropriate antenna or cable routing depends on the equipment, while LG’s TV connections manual explains that external-device connections vary by TV model.

How to connect an antenna or cable feed for recording

If you receive the signal directly from an antenna or cable feed, connect it to the recorder’s supported antenna or cable input, then route the signal onward as the recorder’s manual specifies. Do not assume an older recorder’s tuner supports the current signal from your antenna or provider. Sony’s setup instructions distinguish connection paths by recorder and signal type; follow the diagram for your particular equipment.

For DVD playback, use a separate connection from the recorder’s output to a compatible TV AV input. In Sony’s illustrated setup, the antenna/RF pass-through is not the connection used to play a recorded DVD on the TV.

How to record from a cable or satellite box

A set-top box can feed a recorder only if the box has outputs that match the recorder’s recording inputs. Panasonic’s documented setup connects red, white, and yellow analog audio/video outputs from the box to the recorder’s line input. Panasonic states that for the recorder covered by its instructions, “If your set top box has HDMI only connections you will not be able to connect it to the recorder.” That limitation applies to the described equipment; check your recorder’s manual rather than assuming every model has the same inputs.

Panasonic also warns that its illustrated analog connection may record at lower quality than the HD picture shown on screen, and that unattended recordings of different channels are not possible in that setup. Channel selection and recording quality depend on the devices and how they are connected. See Panasonic’s set-top-box recording instructions for the specific configuration.

Connect the recorder to the TV for playback

Choose a recorder output that matches an available TV input. Connect the recorder’s HDMI output to the TV’s HDMI input, or use a compatible component or composite connection if those ports are available. Sony describes HDMI playback as HD and component and composite as SD for the connection types in its guide; the actual result also depends on the recorder, TV, source, and format.

LG’s recorder manual instructs users to connect the recorder’s HDMI jack to an HDMI-compatible TV or monitor and then set the TV source to HDMI. This is a one-way playback connection: recorder HDMI output to TV HDMI input. It does not send content from the TV to the recorder. The manual also discusses HDCP compatibility limits for protected content and devices; do not attempt to bypass copy protection. See the LG recorder manual and Sony’s HDMI connection guide.

For a composite connection, Sony’s guidance says to connect the DVD recorder to the TV’s composite AV input for DVD playback. The available ports and labels differ by model; consult the Sony composite setup and your device manuals.

Select the TV input and check the picture

  1. Turn on the DVD recorder and the TV.
  2. On the TV, use the Input or Source control to choose the HDMI, component, or composite input connected to the recorder. The label and menu location vary by TV.
  3. Start a disc or other playable content on the recorder. If there is no picture or sound, confirm that the cables are firmly connected and that the TV is set to the matching input, as Sony recommends in its troubleshooting guidance.

Can a DVD recorder record a smart-TV app?

The manufacturer instructions cited here describe recording from an antenna or cable feed, or from a set-top box with compatible outputs. They do not document a supported way to record an app playing on the smart TV. Do not assume the TV’s HDMI inputs send their picture to the recorder, or that a TV app can be sent back over the recorder-to-TV HDMI connection. Check the manuals for the exact TV and recorder, as well as any service restrictions that apply to the content.

Choose connections by compatibility, not by the TV alone

  • For recording: confirm the recorder has a tuner or recording input compatible with the actual signal source.
  • For a set-top box: match the box’s outputs to the recorder’s recording inputs; HDMI output on the box does not guarantee a compatible recorder input.
  • For playback: match a recorder output to an available TV input, and select that input on the TV.
  • For picture quality and scheduling: verify the limitations of the actual connection and equipment, including channel control and timed-recording behavior.
  • For discs: check which recordable disc formats the recorder supports before buying media.
