The reliable way to connect a drone is to treat it as a chain: aircraft, compatible remote controller, the manufacturer’s correct flight app, and—when the controller has no built-in screen—a compatible phone or tablet. Pair the aircraft to the controller first, then establish the controller-to-phone data connection, sign in or bind the aircraft if requested, and finish firmware, location, Remote ID, and registration checks before takeoff.
A controller can sometimes fly the aircraft while the app still reports that the mobile device is disconnected. That is a separate checkpoint, not proof that the whole setup is ready. The model, controller, app, cable, firmware, phone settings, and local aviation rules all matter.
What “connected” means on a drone
Drone systems commonly contain three distinct links:
- Aircraft-to-controller link: the radio connection that carries stick commands and telemetry. If this fails, the controller cannot reliably control the aircraft.
- Controller-to-phone or tablet link: usually a USB data connection for controllers that rely on a mobile device. It carries the live camera view, settings, maps, firmware prompts, and flight records.
- App, account, and location services: software and permissions that may be required for activation, device binding, maps, Remote ID, or other compliance functions.
These links can fail independently. For example, a controller may remain linked to the aircraft while the app displays “RC not connected to mobile device.” Conversely, a phone may open the app correctly while the aircraft is shown as “Aircraft Disconnected.” Diagnose the specific link shown by the warning instead of resetting everything at random.

Identify the exact equipment before pairing
Read the aircraft label, the controller label, and the manual or support page for that model family. Do not assume that a flight app works across every generation. DJI, for example, separates aircraft families that use DJI Fly from those that use DJI GO 4. The controller model is equally important: a built-in-screen controller follows a different setup from a phone-dependent controller such as the RC-N3.
Check compatibility
- Confirm that the controller is listed as compatible with the aircraft model, not merely that both products are from the same manufacturer.
- Confirm which app the manual names. Installing a similarly named but incorrect app can produce an “Aircraft not connected to RC” message even when the hardware is functional.
- Check the phone or tablet operating-system requirements and the connector type supported by the controller.
- If goggles are part of the system, follow the manufacturer’s smartphone-assisted activation and binding procedure; goggles may not use the same path as a standard remote controller.
Prepare the aircraft, controller, and phone
- Charge both flight devices. Charge the aircraft battery and the controller enough to complete pairing and a preflight check. A controller that powers on but shuts down during linking can leave an incomplete pairing state.
- Remove physical obstructions. Take off a phone case if it prevents the plug from seating fully in the controller. Make sure the cable reaches the controller’s designated mobile-device port rather than a charging-only socket.
- Use a known-good data cable. A cable can deliver power while failing to carry data. If the app cannot see the controller, reconnect both ends and try a replacement USB cable with the correct connector and controller compatibility.
- Close competing apps. Quit other flight apps, USB utilities, and software that might claim the phone’s USB connection. Then restart the phone if Android does not display a USB-choice prompt.
- Keep the aircraft and controller close during linking. Pairing is not a substitute for normal line-of-sight flight procedures, but a short distance removes avoidable radio and obstruction variables while you set up.
Connect a phone-dependent controller
A controller such as DJI RC-N3 has no integrated display for the flight interface, so it requires a compatible mobile device. Insert the phone into the controller, connect the supplied or compatible data cable to the controller’s phone port, and then open the flight app named for your aircraft. Grant the app the permissions it requests, especially USB access and location when the controller or Remote ID workflow needs them.
Do not judge success only by whether the phone begins charging. Charging indicates power, not a working data path. The app should identify the controller and show the aircraft status or camera interface before you rely on it for flight.
Pair the aircraft with the controller in DJI Fly
The following DJI Fly sequence is the dependable re-pair procedure for compatible aircraft and controllers. Labels can vary by model or software version, so use the manual if your screen differs.

- Power on the aircraft and controller and connect the phone to the controller if the controller requires one.
- Open DJI Fly and enter Camera View.
- Tap the … (ellipsis) in the upper-right corner.
- Open Control, then choose Re-pair to Aircraft (Link).
- Within the linking window, press and hold the aircraft power button for more than four seconds. DJI indicates that the aircraft beeps and its battery LEDs blink while the link is being established.
- Wait for the controller’s confirmation and for the app to show the aircraft as connected. Do not power either device off during this process.
If the controller still cannot operate the aircraft, repeat the sequence with both units fully powered, the correct app open, and the aircraft close to the controller. A successful phone connection alone does not complete this radio pairing.
Sign in and bind the aircraft when prompted
Some DJI workflows require the aircraft to be associated with your account. In DJI Fly, sign in, open Profile → Device Management → Bind to Account, verify the aircraft serial number, and confirm. Check the serial number against the label or battery compartment before accepting; binding the wrong device can complicate later support or resale.
Goggles and other accessories may use a smartphone-assisted binding flow. Follow the on-screen sequence for the exact goggles and aircraft combination rather than applying the standard controller path.

After the links are established, let the app complete supported firmware checks. An aircraft, controller, and app on incompatible firmware can produce a disconnect even when the cable and radio hardware are sound. Install updates only with adequate battery charge and a stable internet connection, then restart the equipment if the app requests it.

Android USB settings
Android may default to a charging mode that hides the controller from the app. If no USB prompt appears, open the phone’s USB notification or connection settings and select the mode DJI specifies for your device—commonly Charge only or Transfer files. DJI also identifies USB debugging as a possible requirement on some Android phones. Enable it only when the manufacturer’s device-specific instructions call for it, and disable it again if you do not need it.
Location permissions
Allow the flight app to use location when the aircraft, controller, or Remote ID implementation requires a location source. On a phone-dependent controller without integrated GNSS, the phone or tablet may have to supply that position. Keep DJI Fly in the foreground during the flight when that workflow requires it; switching to another app can interrupt the location source.
Complete the United States preflight compliance check
U.S. operators must determine whether the aircraft is covered by FAA registration and Remote ID rules before flying. The FAA defines Remote ID as the ability of a drone in flight to provide identification and location information that other parties can receive through a broadcast signal. For a registered drone, place the registration number on the aircraft as required by the FAA.
Remote ID behavior depends on the aircraft and controller design. If the controller or goggles provide integrated GNSS, they may supply the needed location data. If they do not, use a GNSS-capable phone or tablet, grant DJI Fly location permission, keep the app in the foreground where required, and run compliant firmware. These are U.S.-specific requirements; elsewhere, consult the current aviation authority for registration, broadcast, and operating rules.

Can you fly without Wi‑Fi?
Usually, yes. A normal controller-to-aircraft link is a dedicated radio connection and does not require the phone to join a home or public Wi‑Fi network. A phone-dependent controller generally uses a wired USB data connection, so internet access is not the same thing as aircraft control.
Internet connectivity can still matter for account sign-in, map downloads, firmware updates, activation, or regulatory data. Complete those tasks before leaving coverage when possible. Legacy aircraft that connect to a phone through model-specific Wi‑Fi are the exception: their setup may require the phone to join the aircraft or controller’s network instead of using a cable.

- Try a different known-good data cable; a charging-only lead cannot provide the required data path.
- On Android, inspect the USB notification and select the device’s appropriate USB mode. If no prompt appears, follow DJI’s device-specific USB-debugging guidance.
“Aircraft Disconnected” or “Aircraft not connected to RC”
These messages indicate that the aircraft-controller link or the equipment combination is not recognized. Verify that the aircraft, controller, and app belong to a supported combination, then check for firmware updates. Once compatibility and software are correct, run the DJI Fly Re-pair to Aircraft (Link) procedure and hold the aircraft power button for more than four seconds when instructed.

The controller cannot control the aircraft
Confirm that both devices are powered and that the controller is the one specified for the aircraft. Re-run the manufacturer’s link command rather than relying on an old pairing. Keep the devices close, wait for the audible and LED confirmation, and perform a controlled restart if the first attempt fails.
The app opens but shows no aircraft
Start with app identity: DJI aircraft families can require DJI Fly or DJI GO 4. An incorrect app can look like a hardware fault. Next, inspect the cable and port, confirm the phone is compatible, and check firmware alignment. If the controller has its own display, remove the phone from the diagnosis entirely and test the aircraft-controller link on that screen.
Connection drops on a legacy Wi‑Fi model
Disconnect the phone from other Wi‑Fi networks and join the aircraft or controller SSID shown in the manual. Verify the network name and password exactly. Disable phone Wi‑Fi-assistant features that automatically abandon a network because it has no internet access; an aircraft network can be healthy even when it intentionally has no internet route.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRemote ID reports no location or an error
Determine whether the controller or goggles include GNSS. If not, connect a GNSS-capable phone or tablet, allow the flight app to use location, keep the app in the foreground when required, and confirm that the aircraft and controller firmware support the applicable Remote ID workflow. Do not launch until the regulatory status is resolved.
Choose the connection architecture that fits your flying
| Setup | What carries the flight interface | Main advantages | Typical dependencies |
|---|---|---|---|
| Built-in-screen controller | Controller display and installed flight software | Fewer cable, phone-case, USB-mode, and notification problems | Controller/aircraft compatibility, battery charge, firmware, and any required account or location services |
| Phone-dependent controller (for example, RC-N3) | Compatible phone or tablet connected by USB | Uses a device you already own and can provide a larger or newer display | Correct app, data cable, controller port, phone compatibility, USB permissions, battery, and possibly phone GNSS |
| Model-specific direct Wi‑Fi | Phone connected to the aircraft or controller network | No controller cable for supported legacy designs | Correct SSID/password, Wi‑Fi settings, and protection against automatic network switching |
| Goggles-based system | Goggles, with smartphone assistance for some setup steps | Integrated first-person display for compatible aircraft | Exact goggles/aircraft pairing, app-assisted binding, firmware, and any GNSS/location requirement |
The simplest setup is not universal. A built-in-screen controller removes mobile-device variables, while a phone-dependent controller is convenient if you keep a compatible phone, cable, and permissions ready. For Remote ID, verify whether the chosen controller supplies GNSS or depends on the phone.
A repeatable preflight connection checklist
- Aircraft and controller are the exact compatible models.
- The manufacturer’s named app—not a similar app—is installed and current.
- Aircraft and controller batteries have enough charge for setup and flight.
- The phone case does not obstruct the controller plug.
- The cable is a data-capable cable in the correct controller port.
- The aircraft-controller link shows a positive confirmation, not merely a powered-on controller.
- The app displays the aircraft and camera view without a disconnect warning.
- Account binding, firmware, USB mode, and requested permissions are complete.
- Location access is enabled when required by the aircraft, controller, or Remote ID workflow.
- U.S. registration and Remote ID obligations—or the applicable rules in your country—are satisfied before launch.
When to replace hardware instead of repeating pairing
Repeated re-pairing will not fix a physically damaged port, a cable that supplies power but no data, an unsupported phone, or a controller that is incompatible with the aircraft. Replace the cable first because it is the least disruptive test. If another verified cable and phone still fail, inspect the controller port for debris or damage and consult the manufacturer or an authorized service channel. Do not fly while a warning indicates that the aircraft-controller link or required compliance function is unresolved.
Bottom line for a dependable connection
Identify the exact aircraft, controller, and app; establish the aircraft-controller link; then verify the separate phone-to-controller data path. On compatible DJI Fly systems, use Camera View → … → Control → Re-pair to Aircraft (Link) and hold the aircraft power button for more than four seconds. Finish firmware, account, location, Remote ID, and registration checks before takeoff. When a failure appears, troubleshoot the specific link named by the message instead of treating every disconnect as the same problem.
