You can connect many cameras without Internet by using the camera’s direct Wi‑Fi, a local router with no Internet service, or a supported USB or Ethernet connection to a computer. Some cameras can also record to a memory card while completely offline. The right method depends on whether you need to control the camera, transfer files, view footage, or simply record.
No Internet does not necessarily mean no Wi‑Fi: a local network can carry traffic between a camera and phone even when it cannot reach the Internet. With no network at all, a camera may still record locally, but an app generally cannot reach it unless the camera supports a direct connection.
Choose a connection based on what you need to do

Before choosing, distinguish the task—control, transfer, live view, playback, or recording—from the available connection. Then verify the exact model’s manual: direct Wi‑Fi, USB modes, Ethernet, local storage, app access, and activation requirements are not universal features.
Connect a camera to a phone over direct Wi‑Fi
- Check the manual and app. Find the instructions for the exact camera model and install its required app while you have connectivity, if needed. For example, Canon specifies Camera Connect for the EOS R8 smartphone workflow. Canon EOS R8 connection instructions
- Enable the camera’s smartphone or direct Wi‑Fi function. Follow its screen prompts. Depending on the model, the camera may show a network name (SSID) and password, or the app may initiate pairing. Nikon Z50II guide
- Join the camera network when prompted. - If the app cannot find the camera, check the connection state. Verify the camera’s selected connection mode, the phone’s current Wi‑Fi network, and app and operating-system compatibility. Connect a camera to a computer without a router
USB
Check the camera connector, computer port, and required USB mode before connecting. Some workflows require selecting a specific PC or remote-shooting mode and opening the manufacturer’s desktop utility. Wi‑Fi Direct
Use the camera’s direct wireless mode and connect through the vendor’s computer utility. Sony describes a camera-to-computer connection without an access point, while Nikon’s D6 documentation describes a direct wireless link with the camera acting as a wireless LAN access point. Ethernet for compatible PoE cameras

Record security-camera footage without Internet
First establish whether the camera still has a local network. If the camera and phone or computer are connected to the same router, local access may remain available even when the router has no Internet service. If Wi‑Fi is fully disconnected, a supported camera may continue recording to microSD, but live view or playback through an app may be unavailable. - While the camera is reachable, set the local recording schedule you need.

- Check recorded clips locally before relying on the setup, and ensure the camera or recorder has power.
Offline recording does not promise offline viewing or alerts. Depending on the model and connection state, remote access, push notifications, email, updates, live view, or playback may not work. Some battery-powered models also require Internet during first-time activation. Troubleshoot a camera connection without Internet

- Expect the phone to lose Internet on a direct camera link. If direct Wi‑Fi connects but phone browsing stops, that may be normal for that camera mode. Nikon Z50II smartphone connection instructions
- Check power as well as connectivity. A working local network or installed card cannot help if the camera or recorder has lost power.
What to verify in your camera’s manual
- Whether your model supports direct phone Wi‑Fi, computer Wi‑Fi Direct, USB transfer or control, or Ethernet.
- Which app or desktop utility is required and whether it needs cloud sign-in for the specific task.
- Whether first-time activation requires Internet.
- Whether offline recording is supported, which storage media and capacities are accepted, and how to set the schedule.
- Which features stop without Internet, including remote viewing, notifications, email, and updates.
