For a Node.js service running in a Docker container on Kubernetes, use a startup probe to protect initialization, readiness to control whether a Pod receives traffic, and liveness to restart a process that cannot recover on its own. Treat rollout monitoring and rollback as separate controls: a stalled Deployment raises a signal for operator action; it does not roll itself back.

What each Kubernetes probe controls

Signal What it checks What happens on failure
Startup Whether the application has finished starting Kubernetes waits to run readiness and liveness probes until startup succeeds.
Readiness Whether the Pod should receive service traffic The container keeps running, but the Pod is marked not ready and is not used as a Service backend.
Liveness Whether the process is still making progress and can continue running After repeated failures, Kubernetes treats the container as unhealthy and restarts it.

Kubernetes describes the readiness consequence this way: “When a Pod is not ready, it is removed from Service load balancers.” See the official probe documentation.

How to design probe checks for a Node.js container

Use startup to cover initialization

A startup probe is useful when a process may take a while to initialize. While it has not succeeded, Kubernetes does not run the container’s readiness or liveness probes, reducing the risk that those checks declare a slow-starting process unhealthy too early. Set its allowance from observed startup behavior under realistic deployment conditions, rather than assuming all Node.js services start at the same speed.

The Kubernetes documentation illustrates a startup allowance using failureThreshold: 30 and periodSeconds: 10, which corresponds to 300 seconds. This is an example configuration, not a measured Node.js startup time or a universal recommendation.

Use readiness for traffic eligibility

Readiness should answer whether this instance can serve requests now. A failed readiness check removes the Pod from Service backends without restarting its container. That distinction makes readiness appropriate for temporarily withholding traffic while an instance recovers or is otherwise unable to serve.

Keep liveness focused on recoverable process failure

Liveness should detect a condition for which restarting the process is likely to help, such as a deadlock—not every problem that can affect a request. If a liveness endpoint fails whenever an external dependency is unavailable, a dependency outage can trigger unnecessary restarts. Kubernetes warns that “Incorrect implementation of liveness probes can lead to cascading failures”: restarting overloaded Pods can leave the remaining instances with more work and less capacity. See Kubernetes’ guidance on probe design.

Readiness and liveness can use the same endpoint in some applications, but they have different consequences. Choose the endpoint and its predicate according to the decision each probe controls, not merely because both can return an HTTP response.

Set detection windows from observed behavior

Kubernetes documents API defaults of periodSeconds: 10, timeoutSeconds: 1, and failureThreshold: 3. They are defaults, not workload-specific recommendations. In particular, a one-second timeout may be too short for a check under some conditions, while an overly slow detection window can delay recognizing a real failure.

Tune the period, timeout, and threshold against measured startup time, transient load, and recovery behavior. Consider how long a failure must persist before the probe acts, and whether that delay is acceptable for the service. For HTTP probes, Kubernetes treats status codes from 200 through 399 as success; the kubelet stops reading the response body after 10 KiB. The documentation recommends dedicated, low-cost health endpoints with minimal response bodies. See the HTTP probe details.

Monitor a rollout and decide when to intervene

  1. Follow the Deployment update with kubectl rollout status deployment/<deployment-name>, substituting the actual Deployment name. The command reports rollout progress; it does not determine whether a release is acceptable for your service.

  2. If progress stalls, inspect the Deployment’s Progressing condition and recent events. Kubernetes documentation identifies failing new Pods as one common reason a rollout may not progress.

  3. Review the failed Pods and probe outcomes to distinguish a slow startup, inability to serve traffic, a process failure, or another deployment issue. Use that diagnosis to decide whether to wait, correct the release, or roll back.

The Deployment field progressDeadlineSeconds defaults to 600 seconds. When the deadline expires, Kubernetes reports a stalled rollout through the Progressing=False condition and a progress-deadline-exceeded reason. The controller continues processing the Deployment; expiration is a signal to investigate, not an automatic rollback. See the Deployment documentation.

Roll back using available Deployment history

  1. Inspect the Deployment’s rollout history with kubectl rollout history deployment/<deployment-name> and identify an available earlier revision.

  2. Use the documented rollback workflow, for example kubectl rollout undo deployment/<deployment-name> to return to the previous revision, or specify a revision with --to-revision=<revision> when you have selected one from the history.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  3. Monitor the rollback with kubectl rollout status deployment/<deployment-name> and verify that the restored Pods become ready and serve correctly.

The Deployment API’s default revisionHistoryLimit is 10 old ReplicaSets. Check the history available in your cluster rather than assuming every previous release remains recoverable. A rollback restores a prior Pod template; it does not reverse database migrations, message processing, external side effects, or configuration changes. Before relying on rollback, assess whether those changes remain compatible with the restored application version.

Plan cohorts without assuming a universal percentage

Kubernetes probe and Deployment behavior does not establish a recommended cohort size, canary percentage, traffic-split threshold, or automated rollback rule for Node.js services. Choose cohort sizes and abort conditions using your capacity, observability, and service-level objectives. Define in advance what evidence warrants stopping or reversing a rollout, and ensure the team can act on a stalled Deployment before relying on the progress deadline as a safety mechanism.
