The Map Room is a one-way fast-travel building in Conan Exiles. After you learn Cartographer, craft the room from 200 Corrupted Stone, 35 Iron Reinforcement, 75 Alchemical Base, and 50 Crystal, then place it at a base. You must personally visit and attune each obelisk before it becomes a destination. From the finished Map Room, you can travel to an attuned obelisk; you cannot use that obelisk to return to the Map Room.
The most important planning issue is the return trip. Treat every Map Room departure as a one-way expedition and arrange a separate way home before you activate the transport.

What the Map Room does
The Map Room is a placeable building item that lets you select an obelisk you have already attuned and teleport there from your base. It does not reveal destinations automatically, unlock obelisks remotely, or create a two-way portal.
The Obelisk entry records 10 obelisks on the map, according to the Conan Exiles Wiki accessed in 2026. You can use only the obelisks your character has personally reached and activated. Once an obelisk is attuned, it can be selected from a Map Room at any location where you have built one.
#1 Best Overall
- EXPLORE A VAST WORLD: Explore a giant world, from the burning desert in the south to the snow-capped mountains in the north. Discover ancient cultures, ruins, and dungeons
- SURVIVE: Stay warm, cool yourself down, drink and eat, weather scouring sandstorms, prevent your mind from being corrupted when exploring dark dungeons, and battle vicious monsters to stay alive
- BUILD: Harvest resources to craft tools and weapons, then build anything from a small home to entire cities piece by piece. Build walls, traps, elevators, and more, then deck out your creations with a wide variety of different furniture, crafting stations, and NPC guards
- DOMINATE: Wage war against your enemies, use siege weapons and explosives and see their walls crumble to dust, then unleash your savage fury in violent and brutal combat
- BUILD AN ARMY OF THRALLS: Capture NPCs, drag them back to your base, and use the Wheel of Pain to break their will. Turn them into archers, crafters, entertainers, and more for your settlements
Funcom’s Conan Exiles Update 33 (2018) describes the limitation directly: “You can travel from the maproom to an obelisk, but not the other way around.” That rule affects how you carry supplies, choose a destination, and plan your return route.
What it does not do
- It does not teleport you from an obelisk back to your base.
- It does not attune every obelisk when you learn Cartographer.
- It does not function as a portable inventory item after placement.
- It does not remove the need to travel through the world to activate destinations.
Unlock Cartographer at The Archives
Cartographer is learned from The Archivist in The Archives, a location inside The Unnamed City. This is a location-based knowledge unlock, not a normal level milestone.

- Find The Archivist and interact with the character.
- Learn the Cartographer knowledge when the interaction presents it.
- Open your knowledge or crafting interface and confirm that the Map Room recipe is available.
The knowledge page states that the Map Room can be crafted at any character level after Cartographer has been learned. If the recipe is missing, return to The Archives and check The Archivist rather than waiting for another level.
Map Room materials and crafting requirements
You need four material types and a Construction Hammer. The recipe produces one Map Room.
| Material | Quantity | What to remember |
|---|---|---|
| Corrupted Stone | 200 | The largest quantity in the recipe; prepare this before starting construction. |
| Iron Reinforcement | 35 | Required for the structural portion of the Map Room. |
| Alchemical Base | 75 | Keep the full amount available in the crafting inventory. |
| Crystal | 50 | Needed in addition to the stone, reinforcement, and alchemical components. |
| Construction Hammer | 1 tool | Use it to craft and place the building item. |
The Conan Exiles Wiki records 3,170 crafting experience for the recipe, accessed in 2026. Because crafting values can change between game versions, treat that number as a current reference rather than a permanent guarantee and check the live game if the experience reward matters to your build plan.
Before you leave to gather
- Verify that Cartographer is learned on the character who will use the Map Room.
- Reserve all 200 Corrupted Stone, 35 Iron Reinforcement, 75 Alchemical Base, and 50 Crystal instead of spending part of the stock on another project.
- Carry or have access to a Construction Hammer.
- Choose a foundation area large enough for the final footprint, not merely the visible center of the structure.
How to build a Map Room
- Learn the knowledge. Speak with The Archivist in The Archives at The Unnamed City and learn Cartographer.
- Collect the recipe. Put 200 Corrupted Stone, 35 Iron Reinforcement, 75 Alchemical Base, and 50 Crystal in the crafting inventory or storage arrangement you use for construction.
- Craft the item. Select the Map Room recipe and craft it with a Construction Hammer.
- Prepare the site. Clear decorations, roof pieces, and other obstructions from the intended area. Plan for a room approximately seven foundations wide by seven foundations deep and two walls high.
- Place the Map Room. Use the building interface to position the structure on a stable, accessible surface. Check its edges and doorway before confirming.
- Test access. Walk around the completed room and make sure you can reach the interaction point without a wall, roof, furnishing, or terrain obstruction.
Do not decorate the room first and try to fit the Map Room afterward. Its footprint is unusually large, so a site that looks generous for ordinary crafting stations can still be too small.

How to activate obelisks
An obelisk becomes a Map Room destination only after you travel to it and interact with it. Learning Cartographer and building the room do not activate destinations automatically.
- Choose an obelisk you want to use as a destination.
- Travel to that obelisk through the normal world map and reach the structure in person.
- Interact with the obelisk when its interaction prompt appears.
- Wait for the attunement interaction to complete before leaving the area.
- Repeat the process for every obelisk you want available from your Map Room.
- Return to your base and interact with the Map Room to check that the attuned destination is listed.
The map has 10 obelisks recorded in the Obelisk entry, but you are not required to attune all 10. Attune the destinations that match your regular activities first, then expand coverage when a journey justifies the trip.
How to tell whether attunement worked
The practical check is the Map Room destination list. If an obelisk you visited does not appear, revisit it and interact again, then return to the Map Room and check the list. Do not assume that merely standing near the obelisk completed the process.
How to travel from the Map Room
- Stand at the completed Map Room in a location where you can safely begin the interaction.
- Open its destination interface.
- Select an obelisk that you have already attuned.
- Confirm the destination only after checking what equipment, followers, and supplies you need at the other end.
- Complete the travel interaction and wait for the transfer to finish.
The destination is an obelisk, not a freely chosen point on the map. Your selection is limited to the attuned obelisks shown by the Map Room.
Plan the return before using the room
Map Room travel is one way. After arriving at an obelisk, you cannot interact with that obelisk to teleport back to the Map Room. This is the most common planning error because the room feels like a portal while you are standing at home.
Return-plan checklist
- Know the route from the destination obelisk to your next objective.
- Decide how you will get back to your base before departure.
- Carry the food, healing items, tools, and combat equipment needed for the return journey.
- Account for the possibility that you will be carrying loot and cannot make the return trip with the same mobility setup.
- Leave the Map Room in a secure, accessible location so you can use it again when you return by ordinary travel.
Use the Map Room to skip the outbound distance, not as a substitute for all navigation. The destination becomes a forward staging point; the trip home still needs its own route and resources.

- harvest resources to craft tools and weapons, then build anything from a small home to entire cities piece by piece
Placement, room size, and construction technique
The Map Room is large enough that placement is a building project in its own right. The Conan Exiles Wiki says it fits in a room seven by seven and two walls high. Use that dimension as a planning minimum, then leave additional clearance for walking, doors, stairs, and future construction.
Why placement can be difficult
The placement preview may collide with foundations, walls, terrain, or a roof even when the center of the room appears clear. A lower camera angle can make the footprint difficult to judge. Gaining some elevation and looking down at a steeper angle can make alignment easier.
A reliable placement sequence
- Build the foundations or platform that will support the room.
- Leave the intended footprint open and remove temporary objects that block the preview.
- Raise your character or camera position if the building outline is hard to read.
- Look down at a steeper angle and check all four edges of the preview.
- Confirm that an approach path remains open after placement.
- Place the Map Room before adding a permanent roof or dense interior decoration.
A roof can interfere with initial placement. You can add roof pieces after the Map Room has been placed, so delay roofing rather than trying to force the structure through a low ceiling.
Changing your mind after placement
The Map Room cannot be picked up directly into your inventory. If the location is wrong, remove it through the building or dismantling process available on your server and rebuild it at the new site. The game may return some or all of the materials when you remove it; do not assume that every dismantle will refund the complete recipe before you commit to a move.

The Cartographer knowledge is not available
Go back to The Archives in The Unnamed City and speak with The Archivist. Cartographer is unlocked there, not by reaching a particular character level. Once the interaction is complete, reopen the knowledge or crafting interface and look for the recipe.

The Map Room recipe is missing even though Cartographer was learned
Confirm that you learned the knowledge on the character doing the crafting, that a Construction Hammer is available, and that the recipe quantities are complete: 200 Corrupted Stone, 35 Iron Reinforcement, 75 Alchemical Base, and 50 Crystal. A partial stockpile will prevent crafting even when the recipe itself is unlocked.

The building preview will not place
Clear the seven-by-seven area, check the two-wall height requirement, and remove or temporarily omit roof pieces. Try placing from a little higher up while looking down at a steeper angle. If the preview still collides, enlarge the platform rather than repeatedly rotating the room in a cramped space.
An obelisk does not appear in the destination list
Return to that obelisk and interact with it directly. Proximity alone is not attunement. After the interaction completes, return to the Map Room and check the list again.
You arrived at an obelisk and cannot get back
This is expected behavior, not a malfunction. The Map Room is not a return portal. Follow the ordinary world route back to base or use whatever other return method your current playthrough provides; the obelisk itself does not send you to the Map Room.

Because it cannot be picked up into inventory, plan a dismantle and rebuild. Check the material refund shown by your server before removing it, and make sure you can replace any materials that are not returned.
How to organize an effective Map Room base
Place the room where it is easy to reach from storage, armor, healing supplies, and the exit route. The Map Room is most useful when departure preparation takes seconds rather than requiring a search through a crowded compound.
Recommended layout principles
- Keep a clear approach on at least one side of the structure.
- Leave enough headroom for the final roof, even if you place the roof later.
- Put storage and preparation stations nearby without blocking the interaction area.
- Use lighting and signs or another visual system so different destinations are easy to plan around.
- Protect the room as you would any other important base structure; losing access removes your convenient departure point even though your attuned obelisks remain part of your travel planning.
Think of the room as a dispatch station. Its value comes from reliable access, a complete destination list, and a prepared return plan, not from placing it as close as possible to a decorative center of the base.
Quick Recap
Map Room decision guide
| Question | Map Room answer | Planning consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Where can you go? | Only to obelisks you have attuned. | Early trips should prioritize the obelisks that support your regular routes. |
| Can you choose any map coordinate? | No. The destination is an attuned obelisk. | Choose objectives with the obelisk’s surrounding region in mind. |
| Is travel two-way? | No. Travel is from the Map Room to an obelisk. | Prepare a separate route home before departure. |
| What is the setup cost? | 200 Corrupted Stone, 35 Iron Reinforcement, 75 Alchemical Base, and 50 Crystal, plus a Construction Hammer. | Gather and reserve the entire recipe before starting construction. |
| How much space is needed? | Approximately a seven-by-seven room two walls high. | Build the platform and test placement before roofing or decorating. |
| How many obelisks are recorded? | 10 on the map entry referenced by the Conan Exiles Wiki. | You can expand coverage gradually; you do not need to activate every destination at once. |
