To get a horse in Conan Exiles, find a foal, pick it up, place it in a Stable with feed, wait for the Stable recipe to finish, then remove the mature horse and equip a saddle. You do not capture an adult horse directly. What many players call “taming” is raising the foal, and what many guides call “breeding” is usually the same Stable process rather than mating two adult horses.
This guide explains the complete workflow, practical foal-search advice, feed choices, recipe times, saddles, leveling, server-setting differences, and the limits of the current horse system.

How to get a horse: the complete workflow
The reliable acquisition loop has five stages:
- Find a foal. Foals are young-world spawns, not adult mounts waiting to be knocked out and captured.
- Pick up the foal. Interact with it and carry it back to your base or another location containing a Stable.
- Place the foal in a Stable. Open the Stable inventory and put the foal into the horse input slot.
- Add food and start the recipe. The standard Horse recipe uses one Foal and one Plant Fiber. The current standard recipe listed on the Official Conan Exiles Wiki takes 30 minutes under its stated recipe settings.
- Collect the adult horse and saddle it. When the Stable finishes, remove the horse and put a compatible saddle in the horse’s separate armor slot.
Funcom summarized the system in its Update 38 mount announcement on December 5, 2019: “You will first have to find a foal, then bring it back to a Stable to raise it.” That description remains the clearest way to understand the intended process.
Where to find foals
Foal spawns depend on the map and can also be affected by server configuration. On the Exiled Lands, practical location guides commonly direct players to grassland routes around the K5/K6 area. Treat those coordinates as search examples rather than a universal spawn list: map updates, spawn competition, platform differences, and private-server settings can change what you see.
#1 Best Overall
- The Adventures of Conan is an asymmetrical dice game of exploration, sorcery and glorious combat set in the Hyborian age.
- Let your blade be sharp and your heart unyielding, for in the fray, only the bold claim victory!
- Each role brings new challenges and routes to victory
- All of the characters, adventures, and art are drawn from the Dark Horse Comics line of Conan titles, including Conan, Conan the Cimmerian, Conan the Slayer and more.
A reliable search method
- Choose an open, grassy route rather than searching only inside a settlement or dungeon.
- Look for the small foal model, which is much shorter than an adult horse and can be easy to miss in tall vegetation.
- Circle the area instead of standing in one spot. Spawn points may be occupied by other creatures or by another player’s recent pickup.
- If no foals appear, leave the area far enough for creatures to unload, then return. On a busy server, check another nearby route rather than waiting indefinitely at one spawn.
- Carry the foal to safety before beginning the Stable timer. A foal in your inventory cannot be lost to a creature attack while you travel.
Because there is no single authoritative coordinate list covering every map, edition, and platform, use a current map for the world you are actually playing. A location that works on the Exiled Lands should not be presented as a guaranteed Isle of Siptah or custom-map location.
Stable setup and the food you can use
You need a built Stable before the foal can mature. Place it where you can defend it and where you have room to retrieve the finished horse. The Stable is both the container and the crafting station for horse growth; putting a foal in a normal storage chest does not start maturation.

The current Horse page on the Official Conan Exiles Wiki lists this ordinary recipe:
| Input | Quantity | Output | Listed time | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Foal | 1 | Horse | 30 minutes | Standard recipe shown on the current Horse page; actual time can vary with server settings and recipe tier. |
| Plant Fiber | 1 | Horse | 30 minutes | Common feed paired with one Foal in the standard Stable recipe. |
The table represents one recipe requiring both inputs, not two separate recipes. Put the Foal and Plant Fiber in the Stable, then confirm that the Horse recipe is running.
Other feeds and higher-tier recipes
Stable documentation also lists Bark, Seeds, Vines, and special fodders as possible feeds. Some higher-tier recipes are listed at 45 minutes. These alternatives can produce different ordinary horse variants or cosmetic outcomes, depending on the recipe table and the version of the game you are running.
| Feed category | What the documentation establishes | What you should not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Plant Fiber | Standard Horse recipe; one Foal plus one Plant Fiber is listed at 30 minutes. | That every server uses the same 30-minute timer. |
| Bark, Seeds, or Vines | Documented as Stable feeds in other recipes. | That each feed automatically produces a faster, stronger, or specific horse. |
| Special fodders | Used by special or higher-tier Stable recipes; some are listed at 45 minutes. | That an expensive fodder guarantees a superior combat build. |
Several Stable recipe tables show four ordinary horse variants at 25% each. Those probabilities are recipe-table values, not a promise that every named or cosmetic horse has a one-in-four chance. Check the recipe’s own output list before spending a scarce fodder.

Why your timer may not match 30 or 45 minutes
Official servers use their configured defaults, while private servers can change crafting speed, harvest multipliers, and related progression settings. A server administrator may therefore make the same recipe complete sooner or later than the time printed in a wiki table. Read the recipe currently displayed in your Stable and treat the listed 30-minute and 45-minute figures as version-sensitive reference values, not universal guarantees.
What “tame” means in Conan Exiles
There is no adult-horse capture step. The game’s player-facing process is Stable raising:
- The Foal is the input item.
- The Stable supplies the growth recipe.
- The completed Horse is the adult follower and mount.
For that reason, “tame a horse” is understandable shorthand but technically imprecise. You are raising a juvenile follower rather than knocking out an adult animal and converting it with a wheel or a taming meter.
Can you breed horses?
Current horse and Stable documentation does not show a horse-to-horse mating system, a genetics panel, inherited traits, or an adult-pair breeding interface. In many community guides, “breed” means raising a foal in the Stable or using a special feed recipe. You cannot place two adult horses together and select parents to produce a genetically inherited foal through the documented interface.

How horse variants are determined
The Stable recipe determines the possible output table. Several ordinary recipes list four horse variants at 25% each. The foal’s captured label—regular, sturdy, or swift—does not currently determine the adult horse type according to the Horse page, and the mature appearance is not reliably predicted by the foal icon.
Do not discard a foal solely because its label does not match the adult look you want. If a recipe has multiple ordinary outputs, the result is governed by that recipe’s table rather than by a guaranteed visual conversion from the label.
Choosing and equipping a saddle
Most horses require a saddle before they can be ridden. Saddles go in the horse’s separate armor slot, not in the rider’s armor inventory and not in the horse’s general storage area.
- Open the horse’s inventory or follower interface.
- Locate the dedicated saddle or armor slot.
- Drag the compatible saddle into that slot.
- Mount and test movement before taking the horse on a long trip.
Saddle selection is primarily a trade-off among acceleration, top speed, defense, and maneuverability. There is no single best saddle for every journey.
| Priority | Choose the saddle profile that emphasizes | Best use case | Trade-off to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fast travel | Speed and acceleration | Moving between bases, resources, and distant objectives. | Less emphasis on protection or tight handling, depending on the saddle. |
| Survival under attack | Defense | Crossing dangerous areas or riding near hostile groups. | May give up some speed or acceleration. |
| Precise movement | Maneuverability | Narrow paths, uneven terrain, and combat positioning. | May not maximize straight-line travel speed. |
| Balanced travel | A compromise among the four attributes | General-purpose exploration when you do not want to swap saddles. | No single statistic is maximized. |
Test a saddle with the horse you actually use. A faster saddle is not automatically safer if stamina runs out or if poor handling sends you into a cliff, enemy group, or environmental hazard.
Riding, inventory, and follower behavior
Horses travel substantially faster than a player on foot and can carry inventory, making them useful for both transport and resource runs. They are followers as well as mounts, so their survival and stamina matter during travel.
Stamina management
Continuous sprinting drains the horse’s stamina. If the bar is depleted, the rider can be thrown from the mount. Plan pauses on long routes, avoid sprinting through every stretch of safe terrain, and watch the stamina indicator before entering a fight or climbing difficult ground.
Dungeon limitation
The Horse page notes that a player cannot enter dungeons while mounted. Dismount before crossing a dungeon entrance and make sure the horse is parked somewhere defensible. A mount is a travel solution, not a way to bypass dungeon-entry rules.
Taking another follower
You can keep another follower alongside the horse. This lets the horse provide transport while a separate companion contributes combat support, but it also creates two followers to protect. Avoid leaving either one exposed while you scout or enter a restricted area.
Horse leveling, experience, and stats
Funcom’s follower progression rule applies to horse followers: follower experience comes from killing enemies while the pet or thrall follows you. Crafting, exploration, and other non-combat activities do not grant that follower XP.
How to level a horse
- Keep the horse actively following you rather than leaving it at base.
- Kill enemies with the horse present and following.
- Check its follower level after combat encounters.
- Review the stat increases and perks as levels are gained.
- Adjust your saddle and travel role around the horse’s actual development instead of assuming a fixed end-state.
Leveling grants stat increases and perks, but growth and base attributes vary by follower faction and tier. A universal “best horse build” cannot be promised without a current, version-specific test of the exact horse, recipe, and server configuration. Use the horse’s displayed attributes and unlocked perks when deciding whether it is better suited to travel, carrying, or danger-heavy routes.
Official server versus private-server differences
The underlying foal-to-Stable-to-horse loop is the same, but the experience can differ significantly by server:
- Crafting-time multipliers: can shorten or extend the Stable timer shown in general references.
- Harvest multipliers: change how quickly you gather Plant Fiber and other common feeds.
- Creature and spawn settings: can affect how quickly foals appear, respawn, or compete with other creatures.
- Map and mod changes: can add, remove, or relocate practical foal-search routes.
When troubleshooting, trust the recipe, item tooltip, and server rules visible in your current game before relying on a number copied from a guide written for another configuration.

The foal is not appearing in the Stable recipe
- Confirm that you placed a Foal, not an adult Horse or an unrelated animal.
- Check that the Stable is powered and functioning according to your server’s rules.
- Add the required feed; the standard recipe needs Plant Fiber as well as the Foal.
- Look for an already-running recipe occupying the Stable’s output or queue.
The timer is different from 30 minutes
The 30-minute figure is the standard recipe value listed on the current Horse page. A different recipe tier, private-server crafting multiplier, mod, or game-version change can alter the displayed duration. Use the timer shown by your Stable as the authoritative value for that session.
Best Value
The finished horse cannot be ridden
- Equip a compatible saddle in the horse’s separate armor slot.
- Make sure you are interacting with the mature Horse output rather than the original foal item.
- Check whether the server or current location restricts mounting.
- Move to open ground if the horse is wedged against a structure or terrain.
The horse ran out of stamina and threw me
Stop sprinting long before the stamina bar reaches empty. Allow the horse to recover in a safe area, then continue in shorter bursts. On dangerous routes, favor a saddle profile that supports your need for control or protection instead of choosing speed alone.
The foal label did not produce the expected adult appearance
The regular, sturdy, or swift label does not currently guarantee a particular adult type, and the foal icon is not a reliable preview of the mature appearance. Check the Stable recipe’s output probabilities and possible variants instead of treating the label as a promise.
A practical decision guide
If you want your first usable mount quickly
Search a known Exiled Lands grassland route, pick up the first safe foal, use the standard Plant Fiber recipe, and equip any compatible saddle once the 30-minute recipe completes on a default-like configuration.
If you want a particular visual variant
Inspect the output table for each Stable feed before committing resources. Ordinary recipes may show four variants at 25% each, so one attempt is not a guarantee. Special fodders can use higher-tier recipes, but the documented timer may be 45 minutes and the result still depends on that recipe’s listed outputs.
If you mainly haul resources
Prioritize a saddle and horse setup that support travel speed without exhausting stamina on your normal route. Use the horse’s inventory for transport, but avoid overloading yourself with a long sprint immediately afterward.
If you expect a combat mount
Level the horse by killing enemies while it follows you, monitor its stat gains and perks, and choose protection or maneuverability when the route is more dangerous than it is long. Do not assume every horse has identical growth or that one community build applies across factions, tiers, and server versions.
Quick Recap
Key facts to remember
- You obtain a horse by raising a Foal in a Stable; you do not directly capture an adult horse.
- The standard documented recipe is one Foal plus one Plant Fiber, with a 30-minute reference time on the current Horse page.
- Bark, Seeds, Vines, and special fodders appear in other Stable recipes; some higher-tier recipes list 45 minutes.
- Several ordinary output tables list four variants at 25% each, and the foal label does not reliably predict the adult type.
- “Breeding” generally means Stable raising in community terminology; adult horse pairing and genetics are not documented in the current interface.
- A saddle is normally required and belongs in the horse’s separate armor slot.
- Horses are fast, carry inventory, can accompany another follower, cannot enter dungeons with you, and can throw the rider when stamina is depleted.
- Follower XP comes from killing enemies while the horse follows; crafting and exploration do not grant that follower XP.
