Yes, mods still work in Conan Exiles Enhanced. The Steam PC edition became a free Unreal Engine 5 upgrade on May 5, 2026, with day-one mod support and a refreshed Mod Dev Kit. The important qualification is compatibility: an Enhanced or properly recooked UE5 Workshop release is the safe choice, while an older UE4 (Legacy) package may need upgrading, recooking, and repackaging before it can load.
Install through the Steam Workshop whenever possible, enable the subscription in Enhanced’s in-game Mods menu, and keep the client and server mod lists identical for multiplayer. Mods are for single-player, co-op, self-hosted, or rented non-official servers; the Steam Workshop warning specifically excludes official servers.
What Conan Exiles Enhanced changed for mod users
Enhanced is the PC Steam version built on Unreal Engine 5. It launched as a free upgrade on May 5, 2026. Funcom describes the release as fully supporting mods and shipped a refreshed Mod Dev Kit, so modding did not disappear during the engine transition.
“Fully supports mods” does not mean every old download is immediately usable. A mod made for the UE4 Legacy build can depend on engine systems, assets, packaging, or data structures that changed in UE5. Funcom’s guidance is that some of those projects must be upgraded, recooked, and repackaged for Enhanced. Until the author completes that work, the old file can fail to load, produce a warning, or prevent a world from starting.

Think of Enhanced compatibility as a build-specific requirement rather than a permanent label. A mod that works today can require another update after a game patch, and an apparently simple cosmetic mod can still be affected by a changed dependency or package format.
Which mods are the safest choices now?

There is no permanent universal compatibility list. Workshop pages change as authors publish recooks, and comments often reveal a breakage before a formal description is edited. Look for “Enhanced,” “UE5,” or a current patch number, then read the latest update notes rather than relying on an old screenshot or a Legacy-era recommendation.

A quick compatibility check before subscribing
- Confirm that the page identifies Conan Exiles Enhanced or UE5, not only the Legacy game.
- Read the last-update date and compare it with your installed game patch.
- Check the complete dependency list, including frameworks or libraries that must load first.
- Look for a stated load order and any warnings about single-player, co-op, or dedicated servers.
- Scan recent comments for launch failures, missing assets, save issues, or a required hotfix.
- For a map, verify that the author has tested the current Enhanced build; map support has been identified as future-patch work.
How to install mods from the Steam Workshop
Steam Workshop is Funcom’s easiest installation method because Steam downloads and keeps the subscribed item associated with your account. The game still requires you to activate the item and set its order in Enhanced.
- Open the Conan Exiles Workshop. From Steam, open the game’s Workshop page and search for the mod you want.
- Read the mod page first. Verify Enhanced/UE5 compatibility, dependencies, supported maps, multiplayer notes, and the author’s required load order.
- Subscribe. Select Subscribe. Steam downloads the Workshop files; a subscription is not the same as enabling the mod in a world.
- Launch Conan Exiles Enhanced. Allow Steam to finish the download before starting the game. An interrupted or pending Workshop download can leave an incomplete package.
- Open the in-game Mods menu. Find the subscribed item in the available-mod list and move it to the enabled list.
- Set the load order. Put required frameworks or dependencies where the author specifies them, then arrange other mods in the order recommended on their pages. If no order is stated, add one mod at a time so a later change is easy to identify.
- Apply the list and start your game. Restart after adding a large collection or changing core systems. Keep a backup of the relevant save before opening it with a new or reordered set.
For multiplayer, the same procedure must be completed on the client and the server. The enabled files and their order must match exactly. A player who has subscribed to an item but has not enabled it, or who has a different version cached locally, can still receive a mismatch message.
Installing a mod manually as a .pak file
Manual installation is useful when an author supplies a packaged file outside Workshop or when you need to inspect and remove a specific package. It carries more maintenance work because Steam will not automatically update the file.

- Obtain the Enhanced-compatible
.pakfile from the mod author and confirm that it is intended for your current game build. - Close the game before copying files.
- Place the file in the game’s Mods directory:
<SteamLibrary>steamappscommonConan ExilesConanSandboxMods. - Start Enhanced, open the in-game Mods menu, and enable the package in the required order.
- Record the file name and version so you can identify it when a patch or server mismatch occurs.
To remove a Workshop item, unsubscribe from it in Steam and allow the download state to update. To remove a manually installed item, close the game and delete its corresponding .pak file from ConanSandboxMods. Do not delete unrelated packages; duplicate or obsolete files can create confusing load failures.
Load order, dependencies, and multiplayer matching
Load order determines which data wins when two packages touch the same asset or system. A dependency generally needs to load before the mod that uses it, while a compatibility patch may need to load after both of the mods it changes. The author’s instructions take precedence over a generic ordering rule.
Use one controlled list
- Write down the enabled list and order before changing it.
- Add or update one item at a time when a world is important.
- Keep duplicate versions out of both the Workshop and manual Mods folder.
- After a major change, restart the game rather than assuming a menu refresh rebuilt every package.
Make server and client lists identical
A modded server should expose the same package set and order that its players use. “Nearly the same” is not enough: a missing dependency, an old file with the same display name, or a different order can be reported as a mod mismatch. When troubleshooting, compare actual files and versions rather than only the visible names.
Can you use mods on official servers?
No. The Steam Workshop page states that mods can only be used on non-official servers. That means a modded session belongs on single-player, co-op, a self-hosted server, or a rented server configured for Enhanced. Do not try to work around the restriction by leaving a mod enabled and joining an official world; disable the mod set for that session.
Rented-server requirements
Funcom says rented servers are supported through select hosting providers, but its FAQ does not name the providers. Before paying for a server, ask the host to confirm all of the following for the Enhanced UE5 build:

- Workshop subscriptions or reliable
.pakupload controls. - A way to set and edit the server’s mod order.
- Automatic, downloadable backups and a restore procedure.
- Support for matching the server’s package versions with players’ clients.
- Clear handling of the Exiled Lands and Isle of Siptah maps, including the DLC requirement.
- Timely updates when an Enhanced patch requires mods to be recooked.
A host that supports only the Legacy executable is not suitable for an Enhanced modded world, even if its control panel uses familiar Conan Exiles labels.
Isle of Siptah and the Enhanced server transition
Enhanced merges the Exiled Lands and Isle of Siptah experience for supported PC play, but Isle of Siptah access still requires ownership of that DLC. Funcom scheduled official Isle of Siptah PC server downtime to begin May 4, 2026 at 15:00 UTC and moved official Isle of Siptah characters to Exiled Lands servers for the transition.
Those official-server migration details do not make official servers mod-capable. For a private modded world, confirm that the server host supports the map and that every player owns the required DLC. A map-changing mod adds another layer of risk because custom modded maps were listed as future-patch work in the May notes.
What to do when a mod fails
Separate a base-game problem from a package problem by reducing the loadout methodically. Avoid deleting a save as a first response; a clean launch and a backup give you a recovery point.
“Mod mismatch” when joining a server
- Ask the server administrator for the exact enabled list, order, and package versions.
- Compare it with your own in-game list, not just your Workshop subscriptions.
- Update every listed mod and let Steam finish downloading before launching.
- Remove duplicate manual
.pakfiles that shadow a Workshop copy. - Reorder the client list to match the server precisely, then restart Enhanced.
Do not mix a Legacy build with an Enhanced server or assume that two files with the same display name are interchangeable.

The game warns that a mod is outdated
Disable the named item, check its page for a current recook, and test the game without it. If the author has not published an Enhanced-compatible update, leave it disabled rather than forcing an old package into a live save.
The game crashes or will not reach the main menu
- Close the game and back up your save.
- Disable the most recently added or updated mod, especially a core, map, or dependency package.
- Launch once with the reduced list.
- If the game starts, re-enable updated mods one at a time until the failing package is identified.
- Remove obsolete or duplicate files from
ConanSandboxModswhen using manual installs.
If a clean list still fails, update Enhanced itself and verify that Steam completed all downloads before treating the issue as a mod fault.

A world loads but assets or recipes are missing
Check dependencies and order first. A package can be enabled while its required framework is absent or loaded afterward. Re-read the author’s installation notes for the current patch and test in a copy of the world rather than overwriting the only save.
A custom map no longer loads
Map packages are especially sensitive to engine and world changes. Confirm current Enhanced support with the author, remove the map mod from a test profile, and do not open your only copy of a valuable world until you know the map is recooked for your patch.

Patch 2.2.0 moved Enhanced to Unreal Engine 5.8.2. Funcom notified modders in advance so they could recook their work, but advance notice does not guarantee that every author published an update before players patched. Treat an engine or major content update as a compatibility checkpoint.

- Back up saves before the game or a major mod collection updates.
- Note the game version, mod versions, and load order in a text file.
- Pause automatic changes to a critical server until its mod authors confirm support.
- Update the game and mods in a controlled window, testing a copy of the world first.
- If a mod breaks after a patch, remove or update that mod before reinstalling the base game.
A save may contain structures, items, or map data created by a mod. Removing that mod can make those objects unavailable or leave a world in an unexpected state, which is why a pre-change backup is more useful than relying on a later repair.

When several Workshop items promise the same feature, compare their maintenance and server impact rather than choosing only by subscriber count or screenshots.

A smaller, actively maintained package with clear dependencies is usually easier to keep working than a larger collection whose components have different update histories. For a long-running server, maintenance clarity is a feature in its own right.
A repeatable pre-launch checklist
- Enhanced is updated and Steam has finished all Workshop downloads.
- Every selected mod is marked or documented as Enhanced/UE5-compatible.
- Dependencies are installed, current, and placed before their dependents.
- The load order is recorded and matches the server’s order exactly.
- No obsolete or duplicate
.pakfiles remain inConanSandboxMods. - A recent save backup exists outside the active game folder.
- Any custom map has current author confirmation for the installed patch.
- For a rented server, the host supports Enhanced, mod controls, backups, and the required map/DLC.
- You are joining a non-official server when mods are enabled.
Bottom line
Conan Exiles Enhanced did not end PC modding, but it reset the compatibility baseline. Use new or recooked UE5 releases, install them through Workshop when possible, match client and server lists exactly, and treat every engine or major game patch as a reason to recheck mods. Keep official servers unmodded, protect saves before changing a collection, and remove outdated packages before troubleshooting the base game.
