A computerized branch exchange is generally a private branch exchange (PBX): an organization’s private telephone switching system for connecting internal phone stations and, when configured, linking them to the public telephone network. “Computerized branch exchange” is not established in the cited sources as a separate standardized term; it is best understood as a description of a PBX.

What does a computerized branch exchange do?

A PBX routes calls within a business or other organization and can connect its internal telephones to outside telephone networks. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission defines a PBX as a centralized switching system at an organization that provides internal station-to-station dialing and access to the public switched network (FCC 08-265A).

In practical terms, staff can call one another through the organization’s system, while the PBX can also connect calls to or from the public switched telephone network (PSTN). The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission similarly describes a PBX as a private, voice-capable switching facility at an end-user organization’s premises, connecting local terminals to one another and potentially to the PSTN or other communications networks (CRTC).

Why is it called a private branch exchange?

“Private” distinguishes the organization’s own switching system from a telephone carrier’s public switching network. “Branch exchange” refers to the system’s role in connecting the organization’s telephone stations and routing calls. A PBX may connect to the public network, but that does not make it the carrier’s public switching office. Cisco’s ISDN glossary compares a PBX with a small version of a telephone company’s central switching office, while distinguishing its customer-premises role (Cisco ISDN glossary).

Does “computerized” mean a particular type of PBX?

No specific architecture follows from the word “computerized” in the definitions cited here. Cisco describes PBXs as digital or analog telephone switches on subscriber premises, connecting private and public telephone networks (Cisco PBX glossary). Avaya’s glossary describes a communications server as a software-controlled processor complex that interprets dialing input and makes connections; it notes that this kind of communications system was previously called a switch or PBX (Avaya glossary). These descriptions show that PBXs can involve computer-controlled switching, but they do not establish one architecture for every PBX.

Is PABX different from PBX?

Not necessarily. Cisco’s CTI glossary lists “PABX” as a synonym for “PBX” (Cisco CTI glossary). The sources cited here do not establish a technical distinction between the terms, so treat them as interchangeable unless documentation for a specific system defines them differently.
