Businesses are adopting computer vision to automate visual checks, improve quality and inventory visibility, and turn images and video into operational signals. Adoption interest is clear in manufacturing, but survey results and project analyses should not be mistaken for a count of all businesses using the technology.
Why businesses are adopting computer vision
Computer vision software analyzes images or video to identify, classify, measure, or track what appears in a scene. Its business value is strongest where visual checks are repetitive, high-volume, time-sensitive, or difficult to perform consistently by hand. A system may help detect defects, read labels, monitor shelves, or inspect infrastructure; those are potential operational benefits, not guaranteed savings.
Manufacturing provides one signal of rising interest. In a March 2026 announcement, industrial vision vendor Cognex reported that 57% of more than 500 manufacturers, OEMs, and system integrators surveyed across North America, Europe, and Asia already used AI in machine-vision operations, while another 30% planned near-term deployments. The vendor-sponsored survey describes its respondent group, not an economy-wide adoption rate. Cognex’s survey announcement

The practical appeal is straightforward: software can examine visual information at a pace and consistency that may be hard to maintain with manual inspection, and it can make useful signals available to downstream operations. Whether a project pays off depends on its task, operating conditions, error costs, and integration—not simply on adding an AI model.
What businesses use computer vision for
Computer vision applications vary by industry because the objects, risks, and decisions differ. Roboflow’s 2026 report analyzes more than 200,000 open-source visual-AI projects; its percentages describe the project data analyzed, not the share of companies adopting the technology.

Manufacturing and distribution
Common tasks include defect detection, quality inspection, infrastructure checks, safety or personal protective equipment monitoring, inventory and logistics visibility, and robotics. Roboflow reports that defect detection and quality inspection made up 68% of manufacturing use cases in its analyzed project data; within its manufacturing categories, quality control represented 46% and infrastructure inspection 22%. These figures describe project composition, not factory deployment rates. Cognex also describes machine-vision systems in manufacturing and distribution, including inspection and automation applications.
Retail
Retail projects can recognize products and stock-keeping units, check shelf availability, assess produce, read prices or text, and analyze store layouts. Better shelf visibility may help teams identify replenishment needs, but the project category alone does not establish improved sales or lower labor costs.

Energy, utilities, and infrastructure
Visual systems can support inspection of power grids, towers, renewable-energy assets, and water infrastructure, as well as meter reading and safety monitoring. Images can help teams assess assets that are difficult or time-consuming to reach, but the system still needs suitable imagery and a workflow for reviewing findings.
Automotive and logistics
Automotive uses include damage and component inspection, license plate or vehicle identification number reading, and projects related to autonomous driving or traffic. Logistics and distribution applications include parcel identification, inventory tracking, shipment verification, and warehouse automation.

What adoption data does—and does not—show
Different studies count different things. Cognex asked industrial respondents about machine vision and AI use. Roboflow analyzed open-source projects. NVIDIA’s 2026 survey addressed AI broadly, not computer vision alone, and included people who opted in to its communications.
NVIDIA reported that 64% of respondents said their organizations were actively using AI, 28% were assessing it, and 8% said they were not using AI and had no plans to start. The surveys were fielded from August through December 2025. Those results provide broad AI context, not a computer-vision adoption rate. NVIDIA also describes data-related challenges, limited AI expertise, and uncertainty about return on investment—issues relevant to many AI initiatives, but not measured as computer-vision-specific rates in this survey. NVIDIA’s 2026 AI report
Experience-group comparisons in the Cognex survey are also associations, not proof of cause and effect. Among respondents with more than three years of AI vision experience, 86.1% said systems were easy to scale across multiple sites, compared with 75.3% of the less-experienced group. For ease and speed of development and deployment, the corresponding figures were 81.2% and 72.1%. These differences suggest that experienced respondents reported fewer difficulties; they do not establish that experience alone produced the difference.

Why moving from a promising demo to production is difficult
A working model is only one part of a vision system. A production installation may combine cameras and sensors, lenses and lighting, processing hardware, software or trained models, and integration with operational workflows. The right combination depends on the scene, required resolution and inspection speed, lighting, motion, environment, and the decision the system must support.
Data quality and coverage matter: images must represent the products, conditions, and variations the system will encounter. A solution that performs well on a narrow sample may behave differently when lighting changes, materials reflect light, objects move, or a new product variant appears. Teams also need to decide how to handle uncertain findings and how to keep the system monitored and maintained.
Deployment architecture affects latency, connectivity, data handling, and compute costs. Edge processing runs on or near the device, which can support real-time operation without depending on a cloud connection; on-premises and cloud designs have different infrastructure and data-flow trade-offs. KPMG’s 2025 discussion of industrial vision describes edge AI in those terms. KPMG Corporate Finance’s 2025 report

Cognex’s survey suggests that some manufacturers see newer AI vision tools as easier to use. Cognex engineering VP Shirin Saleem said newer solutions include “intuitive visualization tools, robust audit trails, reduced data requirements, and lower dependence on specialized expertise.” This is a vendor executive’s description, not an independent evaluation of every system.

Before comparing equipment or software, define the operational decision the system must improve. A camera alone is not a complete industrial vision system, and a generic camera may not fit a factory’s speed, optics, lighting, or environmental requirements. “Industrial machine vision camera” is a useful product category to investigate, but suitability depends on the whole application.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Specify the task and the cost of errors. State whether the system must detect defects, measure dimensions, read text, track items, or monitor safety. Define the consequences of a false accept and a false reject.
- Describe the scene and image requirements. Document field of view, resolution, object speed, lighting, reflective or variable materials, and environmental conditions. Confirm that cameras, lenses, lighting, and sensors can capture the needed evidence reliably.
- Test with representative production data. Evaluate on real examples that reflect normal variation and difficult cases. Report missed detections and false alarms separately; a single generic accuracy figure can hide the errors that matter most to the operation.
- Choose where processing will run. Compare edge, on-premises, and cloud approaches against latency, connectivity, data handling, and compute requirements.
- Plan integration and maintenance. Identify connections to line controls and business systems, requirements for audit trails, monitoring and model updates, and who supports the system across one or multiple sites.
- Measure economics against a baseline. Compare the full system and integration cost with a defined starting point, such as inspection labor, scrap, downtime, or missed inventory. Treat return on investment as something to measure, not assume.
Market forecasts are projections, not adoption counts
Commercial market estimates vary by publisher, scope, and methodology, so separate forecast series should not be combined as if they measure the same market. KPMG Corporate Finance’s 2025 report reproduces a Grand View Research projection that the computer-vision market would grow from $24 billion in 2025 to $58 billion by 2030. Those are forecast values attributed to Grand View Research in KPMG’s report, not observed adoption figures or a guarantee of future market size. Business Market Insights publishes a separate commercial estimate and segment forecasts. Business Market Insights’ computer vision market page
