A computer trade show is an organized industry event where companies display and demonstrate computer or related technology products and services, meet buyers and business partners, and discuss developments in the market. The term describes a category, not one fixed event format: a show might focus on consumer computing, enterprise IT, or industrial technology, or include computing as one part of a broader technology fair.
What makes an event a computer trade show?
The defining feature is the business exhibition: companies use the event to present products or services, demonstrate them, meet customers and partners, and explore market opportunities. The CES organizer describes trade shows in those terms in its exhibitor policy.
“Computer trade show” is a descriptive label rather than the official name of a single kind of event. It can mean a computing- or IT-focused expo, but it can also describe a wider technology event whose exhibitors cover computers alongside other sectors.

- Product demonstrations and first looks: Exhibitors show how products or services work and may introduce new offerings. CES identifies demonstrations and first looks as attendee opportunities in its Why CES? information.
- Business meetings and networking: Companies connect with potential customers, buyers, suppliers, and other partners. The U.S. Department of Commerce’s CES overview also describes the event’s role in business connections.
- Talks and conference sessions: Some shows combine an exhibition floor with presentations or a conference program. CES and HANNOVER MESSE both describe conference programming alongside their exhibitions.
- Market and technology discussions: Attendees can use the event to learn about developments in the sectors represented and consider business opportunities.
How broad can the subject matter be?
Shows differ in scope. CES describes a technology event spanning manufacturers, developers, and suppliers of consumer technology hardware, content, and delivery systems. Its categories include computing as well as enterprise, wireless, robotics, and manufacturing; computing is one part of a broader program. See About CES.

HANNOVER MESSE illustrates a more industrial emphasis. Its organizer describes a manufacturing fair bringing together electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, digital, and energy sectors, with automation, digitalization, and research and technology transfer among its exhibition areas. Its event overview explains that scope.
The history of these formats can overlap. According to the HANNOVER MESSE history, the office and information technology fair CeBIT developed within HANNOVER MESSE and received its own hall in 1970. That history shows how a specialized computing and IT event can emerge from a larger industrial fair without the two having the same focus.

Who goes to computer trade shows?
The mix depends on the event. Attendees can include exhibitors, technology professionals, buyers, potential customers, business partners, media, investors, and government or industry leaders. CES describes a broad mix of technology companies, decision-makers, media, and prospective customers, while HANNOVER MESSE’s industrial focus brings together participants from manufacturing and related sectors.

There is no single admission rule for all computer trade shows. Access depends on the specific event and edition; some events are oriented toward industry participants, while other access arrangements may differ. Check the named show’s official registration or attendance page for its current eligibility requirements before making plans.

How to compare two computer expos
Look beyond the word “computer” in an event’s name. These criteria help establish whether a show fits your interests or business needs:
- Subject focus: Is it centered on consumer devices, enterprise IT, communications, manufacturing technology, or a mix?
- Audience and access: Who is the event intended for, and what are the current registration rules?
- Business purpose: Is the emphasis on product discovery, demonstrations, sourcing, partnerships, customer meetings, or market intelligence?
- Program format: Does it offer an exhibition floor, conference sessions, talks, demonstrations, or networking opportunities?
- Location and timing: Dates and venues vary by event and edition, so confirm them on the organizer’s current event page.
What attendance figures can—and cannot—tell you
The Consumer Technology Association reported 148,392 participants at CES 2026 in its audited results announcement dated 31 March 2026. That figure applies to CES 2026 only; it is not a measure of computer trade shows as a whole. The available sources do not establish a general count or size for the category.
