Computer terminology is the vocabulary used to describe computing concepts, systems, methods, and practices, together with definitions that explain what those terms mean. Because computing spans many specialties, a term’s meaning may depend on its subject area, source, and publication date.
What does computer terminology mean?
Computer terminology is the set of words and expressions used in computing and the definitions attached to them. IEEE describes its Computer Dictionary project as identifying terms in current use and establishing standard definitions. The aim is to make technical language more precise, not to create one short glossary that covers every part of computing.
Computing includes areas such as computer architecture, storage, software engineering, networking, programming languages, security and privacy, and artificial intelligence. Each area develops specialized vocabulary, so the best definition for a term often comes from a reference focused on that subject.

Definitions can differ because sources address different technical contexts, use different editions, or were published at different times. A word used in everyday computing may also have a narrower meaning in engineering, security, policy, or software development.

Formal glossaries can differ, too. The foreword to IEEE Std 610.12-1990 explains that the broader dictionary project drew on established standards, but sometimes had to develop, revise, or combine definitions when existing standards were incomplete, unclear, or inconsistent. A glossary entry should therefore be read in light of its scope and source rather than treated as a universal definition.
How to check an unfamiliar computer term
- Identify the subject area. Work out whether the term is being used in general computing, software engineering, cybersecurity, networking, or another specialty.
- Choose a glossary or standard for that subject. A specialized reference is more useful than assuming a general dictionary covers the technical use.
- Check the source and edition. Note who published the definition and when. A standard glossary may be authoritative within its stated scope without being current or universal.
- Follow the entry to its underlying publication. NIST advises readers to consult the source publication for authoritative terminology and context.
- Compare definitions in context if they differ. Record each definition’s source, date, subject area, and intended use instead of forcing them into one meaning.
What the major glossary examples cover
| Reference | Scope and date | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| IEEE Std 610.12-1990, IEEE Standard Glossary of Software Engineering Terminology | A software engineering glossary from the 1990 edition; its foreword also describes the wider IEEE Computer Dictionary project. | Use it for its stated software engineering scope and edition, not as a current dictionary for all computing. |
| NIST CSRC Glossary | A cybersecurity and privacy glossary aggregating definitions from NIST publications and CNSSI 4009-2022. The page reports it was last updated August 26, 2026. | Check the publication attached to an entry: NIST notes that terms can have different definitions in publications from different contexts and dates. |
| NISTIR 4659, Glossary of Computer Security Terminology | A historical computer security glossary published in September 1991. | Use it as a record of terminology compiled at that time; it does not claim to settle every entry on one agreed definition. |
How to describe competing definitions clearly
When two sources define the same term differently, keep their distinctions visible. State the subject area, publication or standard, date or edition, and whether the wording is an adopted definition or a glossary editor’s revised or composite wording. That gives readers enough context to understand why the definitions differ without implying that one must apply in every situation.
