A computer on a stick is a compact, self-contained computer that plugs into a TV or monitor’s HDMI port and uses that screen for display. It contains computing hardware and software, unlike a streaming receiver, which is primarily designed to deliver media services. It also needs power and an input method, such as a keyboard and mouse.
What “computer on a stick” means
Also called a “PC on a stick,” “screenless PC,” or “any screen computer,” this form factor puts a computer’s core components in a small device that connects directly to an HDMI-equipped display. The Computer Language Company describes devices in this category as using processors such as ARM or Atom, flash storage, and operating systems such as Linux or Windows. The key distinction is what the device does: a computer on a stick supplies general-purpose computing hardware and can run applications; the connected TV or monitor supplies the screen. A streaming stick is generally intended to provide media services instead.
What you need to use one
The exact setup depends on the model, but the basics are an HDMI display, power, and a way to control the computer. Some models connect directly to the display; an HDMI extension cable may help when ports are difficult to reach. USB ports may serve peripherals, while USB can also be used for power on some devices.

- Display: A television or monitor with HDMI input.
- Power: A suitable power adapter or other power arrangement specified for the device.
- Input: A keyboard and mouse, remote, or compatible phone or tablet, depending on the model.
- Network: Wi-Fi or another supported connection if the task requires internet access.
Do not assume every model supports every input method. For example, the reference definition mentions phone or tablet control, wireless keyboard and mouse, and infrared remote as possibilities; those options are not universal.
What can a computer on a stick do?
Because it is a computer rather than just a media receiver, it can be used for tasks such as web browsing, online media, light productivity, or business uses such as thin-client access and digital signage. These are use cases listed for a historical Intel model, not independently tested performance guarantees for the entire category. Workload suitability depends on the specific processor, memory, storage, cooling, operating system, and software.

A retailer’s listing for Intel Compute Stick model BLKSTK1A32SC gives an example of the components in a specific device: an Atom x5-Z8300 processor, 2 GB RAM, 32 GB eMMC storage, Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 4.0, USB ports, and microSD support. What it is not
- Not simply a streaming stick: A computer stick contains computing components and runs applications; a streaming receiver is primarily a media device.
- Not necessarily a USB computer: The typical display connection is HDMI. USB may supply power or connect peripherals, depending on the model.
- Not a bootable operating-system USB drive: A bootable USB product uses an existing computer’s hardware. That is different from a self-contained computer that plugs into a display.
It is also useful to keep the category separate from single-board computers: both can be compact computers, but a computer on a stick is characterized by its small HDMI-connected form factor.
