A computer flea market is an in-person fair or swap meet where people buy, sell, or browse computer hardware and software. Depending on the event, you may find used, vintage, specialist, or uncommon equipment; the exact selection depends on its vendors and focus.
What does “computer flea market” mean?
It describes an event or marketplace format, not a particular computer product. Related names include computer fair, computer show, and computer swap meet. The terms overlap, but they do not guarantee the same format: a swap meet may emphasize trading, while a fair or flea market may include sales and browsing.
In a 1992 COMPUTE! article, Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols described computer flea markets and fairs as places where people could examine computer goods in person. He also noted that user groups, entrepreneurs, and hamfests could be involved. The article reflects its era; its examples and prices should not be taken as current market guidance. What can you find at one?
Computer-focused events may offer hardware and software, including older or used goods and equipment for less-common systems. What is actually available varies by event and seller. Some electronics swap meets also bring together computer items, amateur-radio gear, and other electronics; that broader mix is a feature of particular events, not part of a universal definition.
For example, the Silicon Valley Electronics Flea Market describes itself as an electronics and amateur-radio swap meet. Its scope is one local example of a broader electronics event that may include computer equipment. Check the organizer’s event information.

What should you check before buying?
Used equipment may have damage, may not work as expected, or may be difficult to return or get support for after the sale. Examine the item and, where possible, verify that it works before paying. Ask the seller about its condition and any return terms; a low price by itself does not show that an item is good value.
- Look for visible damage and signs of wear.
- Ask to test the item when practical, and confirm that it works with the equipment or system you intend to use.
- Clarify what is included and what the seller will do if the item fails.
How do you plan a visit?
Hours, venue, seller arrangements, and rules vary by organizer and can change. Check the specific event’s current information before travelling, including entry details and any rules for sellers, testing equipment, or disposing of waste. The Silicon Valley organizer publishes its own schedule, location, seller rules, and waste instructions; those details apply to that event, not to computer flea markets generally. Verify current details with the organizer.
