Windows 11 has two different compression tools. To compress the operating-system drive, open File Explorer > This PC, open the OS drive’s Properties, select Compress this drive to save disk space on the General tab, and choose Apply > OK. To compress selected files into a portable archive instead, use Show more options > Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
Choose the kind of compression you actually need
The phrase “file compression” describes two separate Windows 11 actions. Selecting the compression checkbox on a drive changes how Windows stores data across that drive. Creating a compressed (zipped) folder packages the files or folders you select into a separate ZIP archive.
| Question | Compress the OS drive | Create a ZIP archive |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | The entire selected drive, normally the Windows (C:) drive | Only the files or folders you select |
| Result | A drive-level setting; files remain in their existing folders | A new .zip folder appears beside the selected item |
| Main purpose | Free local disk space without deleting the drive’s contents | Bundle files for storage, attachment, or transfer |
| Where you start | This PC > OS drive > Properties | Right-click a file or folder in File Explorer |
Use the first procedure when your local Windows drive is running short of space. Use the second when you need one archive containing particular files. A ZIP archive is not required before enabling drive compression, and drive compression does not create a ZIP file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow to enable compression on the Windows 11 OS drive
These steps use the built-in File Explorer control documented by Microsoft. The OS drive is usually labeled (C:), but confirm the label before applying a drive-wide setting.

- Open File Explorer. Select This PC in the navigation pane so the computer’s drives are visible.
- Open the drive’s properties. Right-click the drive that contains Windows, usually OS (C:), and select Properties.
- Stay on the General tab. In the section containing the drive’s storage details, find Compress this drive to save disk space.
- Turn on the setting. Select that checkbox, then choose Apply.
- Confirm the change. Choose OK when Windows presents the confirmation or completion dialog. Keep the Properties window open until the operation has been accepted.
The setting applies to the drive rather than to one chosen folder. Existing content remains on the drive, and new content stored there is covered by the drive setting as well. Microsoft says the action does not delete the drive’s contents and that users should not experience problems opening and saving files from the compressed drive.
Check that you selected the intended drive
Drive compression is broader than a file-level command. Before selecting the checkbox, read the drive label and capacity shown in This PC. If you meant to package a few documents, cancel the Properties window and use the ZIP procedure instead. Selecting a data drive rather than the Windows drive changes that data drive, not the operating-system drive.
What enabling drive compression does—and does not—promise
Windows stores the drive’s data in compressed form where the setting applies, while you continue to work with the normal files and folders in File Explorer. You do not have to manually unzip each file to open it, and the setting is not the same as moving files to another disk.

There is no universal space-saving percentage for this procedure. Microsoft’s consumer guidance does not publish a typical amount of recovered space or a general performance benchmark for a particular PC. The result depends on the files already on the drive and the computer’s configuration. Text and other data that compresses well may produce a different result from data that is already compressed.
For the same reason, do not treat drive compression as a guaranteed way to create a specific amount of room for an update. It can help gain extra space for important updates, but the available space after the operation is configuration-dependent. Check the free-space indicator in This PC after Windows finishes if you need to decide whether another cleanup action is necessary.
How to turn drive compression off
You can reverse the setting from the same Properties page:

- Open File Explorer > This PC.
- Right-click the compressed OS drive and select Properties.
- On the General tab, clear Compress this drive to save disk space.
- Select Apply, then choose OK to confirm.
This is the inverse of enabling compression. It does not delete your files; it changes the drive setting back. Allow Windows to accept the change before closing the dialog.
How to create a ZIP file from selected files or folders
Choose this method when the goal is a single archive for emailing, uploading, backing up, or moving a defined set of items. It affects only the items you select and leaves the originals in place.
- Open File Explorer and browse to the file or folder you want to package.
- Right-click the item. On the compact Windows 11 context menu, select Show more options.
- Point to or select Send to, then choose Compressed (zipped) folder.
- Find the new zipped folder in the same location as the source item. Rename it if a clearer archive name is needed.
To include several items, select them together before right-clicking. The ZIP is a separate output, so deleting or moving it does not automatically delete or move the original files. Conversely, deleting the originals after creating a ZIP would leave only the archive copy; retain the originals until you have verified that the archive contains what you need.

Drive compression versus ZIP: practical decisions
| If your goal is… | Use… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Recover room across the Windows drive | Compress this drive to save disk space | It is a drive-level storage setting and Microsoft identifies it as a way to gain extra space for important updates. |
| Send a project as one attachment | Compressed (zipped) folder | It produces one archive containing the selected files. |
| Keep a folder’s normal structure while working in it | Drive compression | The files remain in their existing locations instead of being collected into a separate archive. |
| Compress only a few items while leaving the rest unchanged | ZIP creation | The operation is limited to the files or folders selected at the time. |
| Make files available offline later without keeping full local copies | OneDrive Files On-Demand | It can retain a smaller placeholder on the hard drive while the full file remains in OneDrive. |
Other built-in ways to reclaim local storage
Drive compression is only one storage-management choice in Windows 11. Two other built-in features address different causes of a full drive.
OneDrive Files On-Demand
Files On-Demand keeps a smaller placeholder on the hard drive while the complete file remains in OneDrive. This can reduce local usage for files that you do not need stored fully offline. It is not a prerequisite for drive compression and it does not create a ZIP archive. Use it when cloud-held files are the main source of local space usage and an internet connection is acceptable when the full file is needed.
Storage Sense
Storage Sense can automatically remove selected unneeded items, including temporary files. It is a cleanup feature, not a compression setting. Use it when temporary or otherwise selected removable content is consuming space. Review what it is configured to remove before relying on it for a particular file or folder.

Troubleshooting the Windows 11 compression controls
The checkbox is not visible
- Return to This PC and right-click the drive itself, not a file or folder inside it.
- Open Properties and check the General tab; the drive-level option is not the ZIP command in the context menu.
- Confirm that you are looking at the intended OS drive, usually (C:), rather than a folder’s Properties dialog.
If the control still does not appear, do not substitute a ZIP archive for a drive setting. The two commands have different scopes and outcomes.
The drive still does not have enough free space
Microsoft does not state a guaranteed amount of recovered space, so a small or unnoticeable change is possible for a particular collection of files. Check the free-space indicator after the operation, then consider Storage Sense or Files On-Demand if cleanup or cloud placeholders better match what is consuming space. Do not promise yourself a fixed number of gigabytes before checking the result on your own PC.
You only wanted to compress one folder
Cancel the drive Properties dialog and create a ZIP from that folder: right-click it, choose Show more options > Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder. A drive-level checkbox is unnecessarily broad for that task.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
You want to stop using compression later
Open the same drive’s Properties, clear Compress this drive to save disk space, and apply the change. This reverses the drive setting; it is not an instruction to delete any ZIP files you may have created separately.
A safe workflow before and after enabling compression
- Define the objective: freeing space across the Windows drive calls for drive compression; bundling selected items calls for a ZIP.
- Identify the scope: verify the drive label before changing a drive-wide setting.
- Use the exact control: the drive checkbox is on Properties > General; ZIP creation is under Show more options > Send to.
- Set expectations: Microsoft says the drive contents are not deleted, but it does not provide a universal savings figure or performance guarantee.
- Verify the outcome: check available space after drive compression, or check that the new ZIP appears in the source location after archiving.
- Choose a different remedy when appropriate: use Storage Sense for selected temporary cleanup or Files On-Demand when cloud placeholders fit your workflow.
Key points to remember
Windows 11’s drive-compression path is This PC > OS drive Properties > General > Compress this drive to save disk space > Apply > OK. Microsoft says this does not delete the drive’s contents and should not prevent opening or saving files. The amount of space recovered and any performance effect are not quantified in Microsoft’s guidance, so evaluate the result on the specific PC.
For a selected file or folder, use Show more options > Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder. That creates a separate ZIP archive in the same location and is a different operation from compressing the OS drive.
