A lived-in 3D environment does not need a prop in every corner. For Outstead, her stylized Viking-house scene, 3D environment artist Tulika Roy made the house the focal point, framed it with open grassland and a few guiding features, and placed story-bearing props where the camera could read them. Her workflow shows how composition, controlled reuse, and selective detail can make a student environment feel like a place with a past.
What gives a stylized environment a lived-in feeling?
Roy imagined Outstead as the home of two old friends who had left adventurous lives for a quieter one. She wanted the environment to suggest their story without making characters the focus. A bench, barrels, a chest, a helmet, and similar objects hint at residents and use; they are not simply decoration distributed evenly across the scene.
The concept came from a Viking-house design by Skylar Zhang. Roy chose it for its strong silhouette and curved roof: distinctive enough to reinterpret, but manageable for her project. She used both real-world and stylized references, including references for individual props, to make decisions about proportions, shapes, materials, and detail more deliberately.

She began with a simple blockout in Unreal Engine to check scale and composition. That early pass established the house as the central focal point before she invested time in fine details.

A path, fences, and low hills frame the building and lead the eye toward it. The surrounding Nordic grassland stays open rather than becoming a dense forest; the hills add background variation without crowding the view. This layout gives the house visual priority while leaving room for the scene to breathe.
Roy used Maya for most asset modeling and ZBrush for some finer details. She treated the house as the hero asset and adapted the original concept rather than reproducing it unchanged. Smaller objects remained relatively simple and were checked against references.
Why model the roof shingles instead of making them procedurally?
Roy considered creating the shingles in Substance 3D Designer, but chose to model them because she wanted direct control over their shape and appearance. She created several shingle variations, then used MASH and a lattice to distribute and shape them across the roof.

This was a project-specific tradeoff, not a general verdict on procedural materials. Modeling suited Roy’s goal of a distinctive roof form; a procedural approach would have been a different route, but the interview does not compare their speed or performance.
How did she keep wooden assets consistent without making them identical?
Roy’s trim-sheet workflow was a substantial learning exercise. She learned the basics from a tutorial and combined them with a stylized wooden-plank treatment that gave the trim more shape and dimension. She also made a second color variation so wooden assets would not all repeat exactly the same colors.
For wooden assets, she built color in layers: base color, shadows and darker regions, highlights, lighter highlights, then small patches of stronger color. The limited local palette with selective stronger color reflects advice she took from an 80 Level article by Alex Iveroth; it is not presented as a formal standard.

In Substance 3D Painter, Roy turned the trim-sheet texture folder into a custom Smart Material. It gave assets such as pillars, doors, and gables a shared starting treatment, so she did not have to repeatedly check the trim sheet for highlight and shadow colors. The Smart Material did not complete the assets automatically: she still painted details specific to each one.

Outside the 3D workflow, Roy used acrylic markers in her free time to explore color layering. She said, “I started noticing how one color changed when I put another color over it, which gave me a better understanding that I could use while texturing.” This was her personal color-study practice, not a required production step or a method for painting the 3D assets.
How did grass and foliage fit into the scene?
Roy used Unreal Engine’s Runtime Virtual Texture (RVT) to let grass read color information painted onto the landscape. Different ground colors could influence the grass color, reducing the need to create a separate grass material for each area. She added simple wind movement, enough to animate the grass without distracting from the rest of the scene.

Foliage was new to Roy. She made flower base-color and alpha maps in Photoshop, then assembled flowers from simple planes in Maya; she used a similar plane-based approach for tree leaves. For the tree canopy, she followed a tutorial by Victoria Zavhorodnia and exposed material-instance parameters to adjust its stylized look. The interview does not identify the tutorial or provide its technical settings.

Roy assembled the large elements first, including the house and fences. She then placed smaller props where they would be visible from the main camera. That decision connected the imagined residents’ story to what the composition actually shows, while avoiding detail in areas that would not contribute to the view.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsShe used Unreal Engine for the final scene and render, and Ultra Dynamic Sky to help set up the sky and overall lighting. She tested lighting arrangements for a peaceful, cozy mood while keeping the house and smaller details readable. Rather than trying to light every part of the environment equally, she judged brightness through the main camera.

How long did the project take, and what did Roy learn?
Two and a half months — Tulika Roy, 2026. Roy described the duration as approximate; she worked on the project while balancing classes, a part-time job, and other commitments. It is a figure for this project, not a general production estimate.
Roy said an unexpected interruption cost her time and confidence. Her takeaway was to begin by making something exist, then improve it gradually, rather than waiting for an immediate perfect result: “One thing I learned from this was that sometimes the hardest part is simply starting.”
Foliage was another unfamiliar task she had postponed, but became one of the most rewarding parts once she began. Roy credited planning, references, a clear blockout, composition, and concentrating effort on important visible areas with making later stages easier. Outstead was her final major project for an MA in Games Art and Design at the University of Hertfordshire; the account is her description of a student project, not a controlled comparison of production methods or a historical guide to Viking homes.
