The Component Object Model (COM) is a Microsoft standard for binary software components to expose functionality through interfaces and work with other components. It is not a programming language: COM defines how compiled components present and call functionality, while developers choose how to implement them.
What COM means
Microsoft Learn defines COM as “a platform-independent, distributed, object-oriented system for creating binary software components that can interact.” In practical terms, COM specifies rules that let one compiled component request functionality from another through a defined interface. The components can be written in different languages if they meet COM’s interface and calling requirements and have suitable runtime or interoperability support.
COM is a standard and object model, not a required application architecture. It does not dictate a component’s internal design or require every program to use components.

An interface is the contract
A COM interface describes a group of related methods that a client may call. It defines the callable contract, not the code that performs the work. A COM object implements the interfaces it supports; clients use an interface pointer to call its methods rather than accessing its internal data directly.

Objects expose capabilities through interfaces
A client asks an object for an interface and then calls methods through the returned pointer. This separates the public contract from its implementation: a component can provide functionality without requiring clients to know how that functionality is built internally.
What IUnknown does
IUnknown is the foundational COM interface mechanism. Its three methods support interface discovery and object lifetime management:

QueryInterfacerequests a pointer to another interface the object supports.AddRefincrements the object’s reference count.Releasedecrements the reference count and allows the object to be destroyed when no references remain.
Reference counting is a convention that components and clients must use correctly; it does not prevent every lifetime or resource-management bug.

Where COM components can interact
COM objects can interact within the same process, between processes, or across computers. Marshaling adapts interface calls and data when they cross thread, process, or network boundaries. That capability does not mean every COM call is remote or that remote use is automatically configured; a particular application and environment must support the relevant boundary-crossing setup.

COM class, object, and component
- COM class: The concrete implementation definition that supplies one or more interfaces.
- COM object: An instance created from a COM class.
- Component: Often the binary unit that creates COM objects.
A COM class is identified by a class identifier, or CLSID, which is a unique 128-bit GUID. On Windows, COM registration maps a CLSID to the location of the server implementation.

How COM differs from related terms
- A programming language: COM is a binary component standard, not a language such as C++ or another language used to implement a component.
- A C++ class: A C++ class is a language-level type; a COM class is an implementation identified for COM use and accessed through its interfaces.
- OLE and ActiveX: These are technologies built on COM, not alternate names for COM itself.
