Companies in technology, finance, manufacturing and other sectors have announced or considered job cuts while expanding AI investment or restructuring operations. But an AI connection is not proof that AI directly caused every cut: some employers explicitly cite AI or automation, while others describe broader efficiency or restructuring goals. The latest Reuters roundup reviewed here, published October 12, 2026, mixes announced reductions with future plans and contemplated cuts, so its figures should not be added into a single AI-layoff total.

Which companies are cutting jobs as investment shifts toward AI?

Reuters’ October 12, 2026 factbox covers reported AI-linked workforce reductions and plans announced from October 2025 onward. The figures below are Reuters-reported, not independently verified here against each employer’s announcement. Status and timing matter: a proposal under consideration is not a completed layoff, and a multi-year plan is not an immediate reduction.

Company Reported reduction and status Stated or reported context
HSBC Holdings Weighing 20,000 cuts, about 10% of its workforce; contemplated, not completed. AI overhaul; Reuters, October 12, 2026.
Standard Chartered More than 7,000 cuts over four years. Reuters describes AI-driven operational streamlining and profitability optimization; October 12, 2026.
HP Inc. 4,000–6,000 global cuts planned by the end of 2028. AI and operational streamlining; Reuters, October 12, 2026.
Microsoft 4,800 cuts announced in July, or 2.1% of its workforce; commercial and Xbox businesses. Reuters, October 12, 2026, links the entry to the AI-shift roundup; the percentage and business scope are Reuters-reported.
Dow 4,500 cuts announced in January. Automation and AI streamlining; Reuters, October 12, 2026.

Atlassian 1,600 cuts announced in March, around 10% of its workforce. AI and enterprise-sales push; Reuters, October 12, 2026.
Meta A March report described possible cuts reaching 20% of the workforce; this was a possibility, not a completed reduction. Reuters also listed more than 1,000 Reality Labs cuts in January and about 600 Superintelligence Labs cuts in October. The March possibility was reported amid an AI focus and planned $600 billion data-center investment by 2028; Reuters, October 12, 2026. The separately dated division cuts should not be merged with that possibility.
WiseTech 2,000 cuts. Reuters, October 12, 2026; see its factbox for the specific entry’s timing and context.
Allianz Up to 1,800 cuts. Reuters, October 12, 2026; see its factbox for the specific entry’s timing and context.

MercadoLibre 119 cuts. Reuters, October 12, 2026; see its factbox for the specific entry’s timing and context.

Reuters also lists cuts in a company AGI group in July without a specified number. It separately lists no-number productivity-program information for British American Tobacco, apart from the June plan shown above. Those entries do not support a numeric comparison.

Do these announcements mean AI directly caused the layoffs?

Not necessarily. The Associated Press reported on May 14, 2026, that employers often give broad explanations for job reductions and that AI is rarely the sole reason they cite. Some announcements explicitly connect restructuring to AI adoption or automation; others pair cuts with AI investment while also citing simplification, profitability or operational efficiency. An AI-focused strategy alongside layoffs does not, by itself, establish that software replaced the people whose jobs were cut.

Block CEO Jack Dorsey said in a shareholder letter, “A significantly smaller team, using the tools we’re building, can do more and do it better.” Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins told employees that “the companies that will win in the AI era will be those with focus, urgency, and the discipline to continuously shift investment”. These are executives’ explanations of strategy, not independent evidence that AI directly caused each position to disappear or that the expected productivity gains have already occurred.

How can you tell an AI-linked cut from a broader restructuring?

Separate what the announcement says from what can reasonably be inferred. The distinction is important because a company may be investing in AI while reducing staff for reasons that include cost control, organizational changes or a shift in business priorities.

Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.
  • Directly linked: the company or report explicitly describes AI adoption or automation as part of the rationale for the cuts.
  • AI investment alongside cuts: the company is expanding AI spending or focus, but the stated rationale also includes broader restructuring, streamlining or profitability. The connection is contextual, not proof of one-for-one job replacement.
  • AI not cited: an efficiency-oriented reduction should not be labelled an AI layoff if the company did not identify AI as its catalyst.

Uber illustrates the last distinction. Axios reported on September 2, 2026, that the company planned cuts equal to 10% of its workforce to simplify operations; it did not cite AI as the catalyst. Axios reported a global employee count of approximately 36,600 as of June 30, 2026, based on a public filing. CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said the changes were intended to “make Uber simpler and faster, and create more capacity to invest in our future.” That is a stated operational rationale, not an AI explanation.

How many jobs are being cut because of AI?

The cited reporting does not establish an authoritative aggregate of jobs lost specifically because of AI, nor does it quantify AI’s net employment effect. Reuters’ factbox combines different time periods and statuses, from announced cuts to reductions still being weighed and plans extending several years. It also includes entries with different degrees of connection to AI. Adding the figures would therefore produce a misleading total, not a verified count of jobs caused by AI.
