Windows can compress its own operating-system files with compact /compactos:always. The command can reduce the space those files occupy, but it is not a guaranteed speed boost or a fixed amount of free storage: compressed files need CPU time to decompress, and the balance depends on your storage device, processor, and workload. To find out whether it helps your PC, check its state and compare the same tasks with CompactOS enabled and disabled.
What CompactOS does—and what the command does not tell you
CompactOS stores Windows operating-system files in compressed form. That can reduce the number of bytes read from storage, but Windows must decompress data as it is used, adding CPU work. Microsoft describes the performance trade-off as dependent on the relative performance of storage and compute; it does not publish a universal speed penalty or gain. Microsoft’s Compact OS guidance recommends measuring the scenarios that matter on the target device.
The command changes CompactOS state; it does not report a benchmark, promise a particular amount of space recovered, or remove a recovery image. Microsoft’s 2015 discussion treated system-file compression and recovery-image changes as separate approaches to reducing a Windows footprint.
Enable, check, or disable CompactOS
Use an elevated Command Prompt or other elevated command window. Microsoft’s runtime how-to is specifically for Windows IoT Enterprise; its Compact command reference lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 among the applicable systems. Check the guidance for your edition and environment before using the command.

- Enable: Run
compact /compactos:always. Windows enables CompactOS. - Check the current state: Run
compact /compactos:query. - Disable: Run
compact /compactos:neverto turn CompactOS off.
These switches control CompactOS. The compact utility also has other file-compression features, including /EXE options; those are not the same operation.
How much space can it free?
There is no dependable savings figure for every current PC. The amount depends on the installation and its existing state. For historical context, Microsoft’s Windows Storage and Deployment Teams reported in 2015 that system-file compression returned approximately 1.5 GB on 32-bit Windows 10 and 2.6 GB on 64-bit Windows 10. Those figures describe Windows 10 at that time, not a forecast or guarantee for a present-day installation. Microsoft’s 2015 Windows 10 footprint article also discussed recovery images separately; it cited a typical image size of 4 GB to 12 GB depending on make and model, not CompactOS savings.

What performance catch should you benchmark?
There are two competing effects: compressed files can mean fewer bytes read from storage, while decompression consumes processor time. A fast CPU paired with slower storage may benefit from reduced reads; a different hardware and workload combination may not. Microsoft says relatively new devices, especially those using solid-state drives, should not observe much performance downside, but that is qualified guidance rather than a guarantee for every PC.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Choose measurements that match your use
- Boot and shutdown: Compare elapsed time under consistent conditions.
- App launch: Measure the applications and launch pattern you care about.
- Disk I/O: Compare throughput for the workload in question.
- CPU use during reads: Watch whether decompression adds meaningful processor load.
- Other tasks: If update installation or another workload matters to you, measure its duration directly rather than assuming CompactOS caused a change.
Microsoft identifies the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit and DiskSpd as tools to consider for evaluating performance. Keep the Windows edition and build, CPU, memory, storage device, test workload, and CompactOS state in your notes. Run repeated comparisons and report variation if you are sharing results; a before-and-after result without those conditions is hard to interpret.

A Reddit commenter has described a comparison between two similar devices, attributing a lengthy cumulative-update installation on one to CompactOS and saying that disabling it changed the outcome. That is an uncontrolled personal account, not evidence that CompactOS generally slows updates or that it caused the reported difference. For your PC, treat update duration as a workload to test under consistent conditions, not as a predictable penalty.
