Nginx connection errors become much easier to fix when you identify the failing hop first: the client to Nginx, Nginx’s local listener, or Nginx to an upstream application. A refused connection usually means no process is listening at the configured upstream address. A 504 means Nginx waited too long between upstream reads. A 502 usually indicates a failed connection or invalid upstream response, while an occasional accept() failed ... Software caused connection abort message can simply mean a client disconnected before Nginx processed the request.
Start every configuration change with nginx -t, test the upstream from the same host or container namespace as Nginx, and correlate the error with timestamps, upstream addresses, status codes, and backend logs. The sections below map each common message to a safe diagnostic path and a justified fix.

Use the error’s timing and location to narrow the problem. An immediate failure during connection setup points to a listener, address, port, protocol, or network-policy issue. A failure after a request has been sent points more often to backend processing, response framing, or an idle timeout.
| Symptom | Likely failing hop | Timing clue | First check |
|---|---|---|---|
accept() failed ... Software caused connection abort |
Client-to-Nginx connection | Client closes before Nginx accepts or processes it | Frequency, client pattern, and correlated latency |
connect() failed ... Connection refused |
Nginx-to-upstream | Immediate refusal during TCP setup | Backend listener, address, port, and network reachability |
| 504 Gateway Timeout | Nginx-to-upstream | No upstream data during the configured read interval | Backend work, queueing, and proxy_read_timeout |
| 502 Bad Gateway | Nginx-to-upstream | Connection or protocol failure while obtaining a valid response | Error-log errno, upstream URL, and response-header state |
| 503 Service Unavailable | Upstream pool or routing | No usable backend is available or a health check failed | Pool state, health-check result, and backend readiness |
| DNS or address-family errors | Nginx-to-upstream name resolution | Failure varies by name, record, or IPv4/IPv6 path | Resolver, records, and direct tests from Nginx’s namespace |
When several upstreams are configured, compare failures by backend address. One failing member suggests a local service or node problem; simultaneous failures suggest shared configuration, DNS, firewall, or application overload.

accept() failed ... Software caused connection abort
Nginx documents this message as a consequence of clients closing connections before Nginx can process them. A user abandoning a page while many assets are loading is a typical example. An occasional event is therefore not evidence that the listening socket or kernel is broken.
When it is harmless
- The message is infrequent and isolated to individual client addresses.
- There is no matching increase in request latency, worker saturation, or failed requests.
- Clients are navigating away, canceling downloads, or losing a mobile connection.
When to investigate further
Measure the rate over time and correlate it with slow responses, a proxy or load balancer idle limit, and a specific client population. Check whether one route produces unusually large or slow responses. Do not change socket settings solely because of a few log entries; first establish that the aborts coincide with a reproducible production failure.

A refusal means Nginx attempted a TCP connection to the configured upstream endpoint and the endpoint rejected it because no listener accepted the connection at that address and port. The failure is normally between Nginx and the backend, not between the browser and Nginx.
Check the backend listener
- Identify the exact upstream address and port in the error log and the active
proxy_pass, FastCGI, gRPC, or other upstream configuration. - From the Nginx host or container, inspect listening sockets with the operating system’s socket tools and verify that the application process is running.
- Perform a direct TCP test using the same hostname, port, and address family. A test from your laptop is insufficient when Nginx runs in a separate network namespace.
- Check service, container, and application logs for a crash, failed startup, exhausted file descriptors, or a bind error.
Verify the configured endpoint
Confirm that the port in proxy_pass matches the service’s actual port and that a container or service name resolves to the intended network. Check firewall rules, security groups, container networks, and local policy controls. If the application listens only on loopback, Nginx in another container or host cannot reach it through that address.

Common protocol mistakes
Make sure the scheme matches the service. Sending HTTPS expectations to a plain HTTP listener, or selecting a TCP port that serves a different protocol, can turn a setup problem into a 502 after the TCP connection succeeds. For Unix sockets, verify the socket path and that the Nginx worker user has permission to connect.
504 Gateway Timeout and upstream read intervals
The documented default for proxy_read_timeout is 60 seconds. It is an interval between two successive read operations, not a maximum duration for the complete response. If the upstream sends no data during that interval, Nginx closes the connection and commonly returns 504.
Find the delay before raising a timeout
- Record the request, upstream address, start time, and Nginx error-log line.
- Measure backend queue time, application execution time, database calls, and time to the first byte.
- Check whether the backend is stalled, overloaded, deadlocked, or waiting on a downstream dependency.
- Compare the measured delay with
proxy_connect_timeout,proxy_read_timeout, andproxy_send_timeout.
Raise a timeout only when the longer wait is an intentional service-level expectation, such as a documented report or streaming endpoint. Set it at the narrowest location that needs it rather than globally. A larger value consumes connections and worker resources for longer and can conceal a backend that is not making progress.
Read timeout versus total response time
A response that periodically sends data can remain open beyond 60 seconds because each successful read resets the interval. Conversely, a backend that spends 61 seconds doing work before its first byte can time out even if the eventual response is small. If long-running work is normal, consider an asynchronous job pattern or a streaming design instead of holding a proxy connection indefinitely.

502 Bad Gateway and invalid upstream responses
A 502 indicates that Nginx could not obtain a valid upstream response. The cause may be a failed connection, a reset connection, malformed response headers, a protocol mismatch, or TLS negotiation trouble.
Read the complete error line
Capture the timestamp, request, upstream URL or socket, errno text, and any phrase describing response headers or protocol state. The upstream address in the line identifies which pool member failed. If only one member appears, test that endpoint directly before changing shared proxy settings.
Validate protocol and transport settings
- For HTTP upstreams, confirm that the service actually speaks HTTP on the selected port and that its response headers are valid.
- For HTTPS upstreams, check certificate validation, SNI, supported TLS versions, and the hostname used for verification.
- For HTTP/2, gRPC, or other specialized protocols, use the corresponding Nginx proxy module and upstream settings rather than treating the service as ordinary HTTP.
- For Unix sockets, verify the path exists after deployment and that the worker process can access it.
Use a direct request from the Nginx host or container with the same TLS and hostname expectations. A successful request from a different network or with different protocol options does not prove that Nginx’s path is correct.
503 responses and unhealthy upstreams
In an upstream pool, Nginx health checks fail when communication errors, timeouts, or responses outside the 2xx and 3xx ranges occur. A failed check marks that server unhealthy and removes it from client routing until it passes again according to the configured check behavior.

Make the check represent readiness
Choose a path that verifies the dependencies required to serve real traffic, not merely that a web process is alive. Confirm that the health-check request resolves the same hostname, reaches the same port, and uses the same IPv4 or IPv6 path as client traffic. A check that uses a different address family or bypasses a required dependency can report healthy while requests still fail.
Distinguish pool exhaustion from application rejection
Inspect the active upstream state and determine whether every member is unhealthy, whether a single member is flapping, or whether the application itself intentionally returns 503. Review health-check logs and backend readiness events before changing retry or failure thresholds. Restoring a failed process or correcting its network path is preferable to masking all members as available.
Name resolution and IPv4/IPv6 problems
The core resolver directive selects DNS servers for runtime resolution and supports controls for IPv4 and IPv6 results. Resolution can fail because the resolver is unreachable, records are stale, split-horizon DNS returns different answers, or the service listens on only one address family.
Compare resolution in the correct namespace
- Resolve the upstream name from the Nginx host or container, not only from an administrator workstation.
- Compare the returned addresses with the address Nginx records in its error log.
- Use direct TCP tests against each returned IPv4 and IPv6 address.
- Verify that the backend binds to the family selected by Nginx and that firewall policy permits it.
Commands such as getent hosts and a TCP client can expose differences between system resolution and the resolver used by Nginx. If IPv6 is advertised but not routable, temporarily control address-family selection while you correct routing or service binding; do not permanently disable a family without understanding the deployment’s requirements.

Keep-alive and send timeouts
The documented default keepalive_timeout is 75 seconds. It controls how long an idle client keep-alive connection remains open. send_timeout defaults to 60 seconds and measures the interval between successive writes to the client, not the total time to send a response.
Slow clients and intermediaries
A slow client, overloaded worker, or load balancer with a shorter idle limit can cause disconnects during response delivery. Compare Nginx values with the client, reverse proxy, CDN, and load-balancer limits. If the client closes first, increasing Nginx’s send timeout will not prevent the disconnect.

Choose values from observed behavior
Use access-log timing and connection metrics to determine whether the delay is idle keep-alive time or blocked response writes. Align values across the path so an intermediary does not terminate an otherwise valid connection earlier than Nginx expects. Avoid globally extending idle periods on a busy server without checking file-descriptor and worker capacity.
A repeatable diagnostic sequence
- Capture context. Save the complete error-log line, timestamp, request, client address, upstream name or address, errno, and response status. Preserve a request identifier when one is available.
- Validate configuration. Run
nginx -t. Correct syntax errors, missing certificate files, unavailable includes, and invalid upstream references before attempting a reload. - Test from Nginx’s network location. Use the configured hostname, port, address family, protocol, and TLS expectations. Test each upstream member when a pool is present.
- Check the backend. Confirm process health, listening sockets, service logs, queue depth, dependency latency, and resource limits.
- Check the path. Review firewall rules, security groups, container networking, DNS reachability, and Unix-socket permissions.
- Compare timing. Relate the observed time to connect, send, and read timeout values. Determine whether the backend produced any bytes before the failure.
- Inspect pool health. For recurring multi-backend failures, review health-check transitions and whether all servers have been removed from routing.
- Increase logging selectively. Raise detail only for the affected server, location, or client while preserving normal production levels elsewhere.
- Reload safely. After validation, reload Nginx and keep the previous configuration available for immediate rollback. Confirm the new worker processes start and that the error rate changes as expected.
Using Nginx logs for difficult cases
Set an appropriate error_log level and include enough context in access logs to correlate requests with upstream timing and status. Debug logging can reveal connection state, resolver activity, and protocol handling, but it is verbose and should be scoped and time-limited.
Verify debug support
Before relying on debug output, inspect the build options with nginx -V and verify that the binary was built with debug support. A configuration that requests debug output cannot provide those details when the installed binary lacks the required build option.
Target a connection
The debug_connection directive can target an individual client address or network so that you can reproduce the failure without flooding logs for every request. Remove or narrow the directive after collecting the needed trace, and protect logs because request headers and connection details may contain sensitive data.
Quick Recap
How to compare possible fixes
| Comparison axis | Question to answer | Why it changes the fix |
|---|---|---|
| Failing hop | Is the problem client-to-Nginx or Nginx-to-upstream? | Listener and client behavior require different remedies from backend connectivity. |
| Error timing | Is it an immediate refusal or an idle timeout? | Refusals point to listeners and routing; timeouts point to progress and timeout policy. |
| Scope | Does one backend fail or the entire pool? | A single node may need service repair; all nodes suggest shared configuration or infrastructure. |
| Protocol | Is the upstream HTTP, HTTPS, FastCGI, gRPC, or a Unix socket? | Each transport has distinct handshake, permissions, and framing requirements. |
| Persistence | Is it one client abort or a reproducible production failure? | Transient client behavior should not trigger risky global tuning. |
Configuration-change checklist
- Record the current configuration and the reason for the change.
- Use the narrowest server, location, or upstream scope that addresses the measured problem.
- Run
nginx -tand confirm every referenced file and certificate exists. - Reload rather than abruptly stopping workers when the configuration is valid.
- Watch error logs, access-log latency, upstream health, and resource use after the reload.
- Roll back if failures spread, connection occupancy rises sharply, or the original error remains unchanged.
