Creating an NFT is more than uploading an image and clicking Mint. The collection type, smart contract, metadata, file format, wallet approval, gas settings, and creator-earnings configuration can all affect what buyers see and what you can change later.

Some mistakes are inconvenient, such as choosing the wrong file format. Others are permanent, including deploying a contract with the wrong name or minting an item into the wrong collection. The following checklist focuses on the errors most likely to cause lost money, broken metadata, failed sales, or avoidable security problems.

1. Choosing the wrong OpenSea creation workflow

OpenSea Studio has separate workflows for different goals:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Create Collection: used when you want to mint NFTs directly to your own wallet.
  • Drop: used when the public or a community should mint NFTs directly into their own wallets.

In the current OpenSea interface, the path for a collection is Studio → Create new → Create Collection. Do not choose a collection simply because it appears to be the quicker option. A drop involves a different distribution model and is more appropriate when you are planning a public mint.

  • Ideal Gift: Nice Collectible for Bitcoin fans, blockchain fans, any Bitcoin miners, cryptocurrency enthusiasts, a must have souvenir gift for them, good for friends, family members, school for coins hunter game!

Decide who will perform the mint before uploading media, configuring supply, or deploying a contract. Changing the intended workflow later can mean rebuilding the project rather than editing a setting.

2. Assuming you can move NFTs to another collection later

OpenSea states that NFTs created in a collection cannot be moved to another collection later. The collection is not merely a folder or category in your profile; it is part of the minting setup.

Before minting, check:

  • the collection name and branding;
  • the blockchain and wallet account;
  • the intended contract type;
  • the media format used by every item; and
  • whether the item belongs in a collection, rather than a public drop.

If you discover an error after minting, creating a second collection may be possible, but the original token will remain associated with the first one.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Treating the contract name and token symbol as temporary

During contract deployment, OpenSea asks for a Contract name and Token symbol. Both are visible on-chain and cannot be changed after deployment. The logo image can be changed later, but that does not make the contract identity editable.

Do not use a placeholder such as TestCollection or an improvised symbol because you expect to fix it before launch. Check capitalization, spelling, abbreviations, and whether the symbol is confusingly similar to an existing project. A short review before deployment is much easier than explaining a permanent mistake to buyers.

4. Confusing ERC-721 and ERC-1155

OpenSea’s current Studio collection workflow creates ERC-1155 NFTs. That matters because ERC-1155 supports multiple copies of a token type. The item’s supply determines how many copies exist:

Supply Result
1 One copy of the item
10 Ten copies of the same token type
0 or an incorrect value May not match your intended minting plan; verify the interface before confirming

A supply of 1 makes the item unique in quantity, but it does not turn the contract into ERC-721. If your application, marketplace integration, or buyer experience depends on ERC-721 behavior, verify the contract standard before using OpenSea Studio.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Mixing incompatible media formats

OpenSea currently requires all NFTs created in the same Studio collection to use the same file type. A collection that starts with PNG images may not accept a later MP4 video in the same workflow.

Choose the collection’s media format before minting the first item. If the project needs still images, animations, audio, or video, plan whether those assets belong in separate collections. Do not assume that a marketplace will automatically normalize different formats for you.

6. Minting without checking supply and the destination wallet

Minting is a blockchain transaction, not just an upload. Confirm the connected wallet and network before approving it. A common failure is preparing the collection in one wallet or browser account and approving the transaction from another.

  1. Open the wallet extension and confirm the active account.
  2. Confirm that the selected network is the one intended for the collection.
  3. Review the collection name, token details, media, and supply.
  4. Click Mint only after checking those values.
  5. Approve the transaction in the wallet when prompted.
  6. Wait for the transaction to complete and verify the resulting token on-chain and in the marketplace.

Closing the wallet prompt does not complete the mint. Conversely, approving an incorrect transaction may create a permanent asset you cannot reorganize into another collection.

7. Uploading media without testing the metadata URI

The image or video is not the entire NFT. Marketplaces read the metadata URI returned by the contract. For ERC-721, the relevant function is tokenURI(uint256 tokenId). For ERC-1155, it is uri(uint256 id).

The metadata controls fields such as the displayed name, description, media reference, and traits. Test the URI directly before launch and confirm that it returns the expected metadata rather than an error page or an HTML upload screen.

A basic metadata response should be valid JSON, for example:

{
  "name": "Example #1",
  "description": "A test NFT",
  "image": "ipfs://...",
  "attributes": [
    {"trait_type": "Color", "value": "Blue"}
  ]
}

The exact fields can vary, but malformed JSON, an unavailable URI, or a URI that resolves to HTML can prevent a marketplace from displaying the NFT correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Using the wrong ERC-1155 URI format

ERC-1155 metadata URIs commonly contain the placeholder {id}. Clients replace it with the token ID written as lowercase hexadecimal, without 0x, and padded to 64 characters.

For token ID 314592, the resolved suffix is:

000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000004cce0

Using decimal digits, uppercase hexadecimal, an unpadded value, or a prefixed 0x can point clients to the wrong metadata file. Test at least one real token ID using the exact URI convention expected by the contract and marketplace.

9. Calling the wrong metadata function in a custom contract

If you are writing a contract instead of using a no-code creator, the metadata interface must match the token standard:

Standard Metadata function Purpose
ERC-721 tokenURI(uint256 tokenId) Returns the metadata URI for an individual token
ERC-1155 uri(uint256 id) Returns the metadata URI for a token type

Also consider the cost of your implementation. OpenZeppelin describes ERC721URIStorage as flexible but more expensive because it stores token-specific URI data. ERC721Enumerable is optional and is often omitted because of its significant gas overhead. Adding every extension by default can make deployment and minting more expensive without improving the buyer’s experience.

10. Changing metadata without signaling the update

If a contract allows metadata to change, marketplaces need to know that an update occurred. OpenSea’s metadata requirements include emitting the relevant metadata-update event. Without the expected signal, a marketplace may continue showing cached information even after the URI or content has changed.

Define your update policy before launch. If metadata is intended to be permanent, use stable storage and avoid adding an unnecessary mutable mechanism. If it is intentionally revealable or updateable, implement the update function and event correctly, then test the refresh behavior.

11. Assuming an on-chain NFT has on-chain artwork

“On-chain NFT” can describe the token and ownership record, not necessarily the artwork. A token may exist on a blockchain while its metadata and media are referenced through HTTP or IPFS. OpenSea supports URI-based metadata as well as metadata embedded directly on-chain.

State clearly what is stored on-chain and what is referenced externally. If long-term availability matters, test the storage provider, pinning arrangement, or hosting plan rather than assuming that the token’s existence guarantees permanent access to its media.

12. Promising royalties as if they were guaranteed

ERC-2981 provides a standard royaltyInfo() method that signals the intended recipient and royalty amount. It does not force every marketplace or buyer to pay that amount. Payment depends on marketplace support and the contract or enforcement mechanism being used.

There is also a terminology difference on OpenSea: the relevant setting is called Creator Earnings, and it may be optional or enforced. Optional earnings are paid only when the seller chooses to pay them. Enforcement uses compatible contract and marketplace mechanisms; it is not a universal guarantee across every trading venue.

If implementing ERC-2981 yourself, calculate the royalty as a percentage of _salePrice. Returning a fixed amount regardless of the sale price is incorrect. The royalty amount and sale price must use the same currency or token unit.

13. Misconfiguring OpenSea creator earnings

The current configuration path is OpenSea Studio → Creator Earnings. Enter the percentage and recipient address, then, where eligible, choose Enforce earnings and approve the wallet signature.

  • Satisfaction Assurance: We take pride in the quality of our novelty cryptocurrency coins. If you are not fully satisfied, we offer a straightforward return and exchange policy.

Important limitations include:

  • OpenSea’s current maximum creator-earnings percentage is 10%.
  • Studio collections launched after 10:00 a.m. PT on April 2, 2024 are listed as enforceable. Earlier Studio contracts have optional earnings only.
  • A custom contract must be compatible with ERC721-C/ERC1155-C or be upgradeable to a compatible standard for OpenSea enforcement.
  • OpenSea’s enforcement method supports OpenSea and marketplaces powered by LimitBreak’s Payment Processor, currently including Magic Eden. Other marketplaces have their own enforcement processes.
  • Enforcement is not necessarily permanent: OpenSea Studio currently provides Creator Earnings → Remove Enforcement, followed by wallet approval.

Explain these limits to collaborators and buyers instead of advertising “guaranteed royalties” without qualification.

14. Budgeting only for the mint

Gas can apply to more than minting. OpenSea lists smart-contract deployment, minting, transfers, purchases, accepting offers, token swaps, and editing NFTs in Studio as actions that may require gas. Editing an item through View/Edit under the Media & Metadata dropdown and then selecting the pencil icon requires a blockchain signature and gas.

Gas is not refundable when a transaction fails. It is paid in the network’s native token, so holding ETH on the wrong network does not solve a shortage of ETH on the required network. OpenSea does not control gas prices or refund them; congestion can also make a transaction’s original fee insufficient for timely processing.

Keep a reserve for deployment, minting, corrections, transfers, and listing-related actions. Avoid repeatedly submitting transactions when the first one is merely pending.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

15. Misunderstanding listing and sale-side gas

Do not assume that every sale action has the same cost or that the seller always pays. OpenSea currently states that:

Action Typical party or condition
Fixed-price purchase Buyer pays the purchase gas
Accepting an offer Seller pays the gas
First listing from a particular collection May require a one-time collection approval transaction
Later fixed-price listings in that collection Gas-free under OpenSea’s stated conditions
Canceling a listing Incurs gas
Reducing an ERC-721 listing price Gas-free according to OpenSea’s stated conditions
Reducing an ERC-1155 listing price The price-drop action does not apply

Check the wallet confirmation screen before approving any action. The exact cost can vary with the network and transaction state.

16. Paying a fake buyer or fake support agent

A legitimate buyer can purchase a listed item without you sending additional funds. Treat any message asking you to pay “ERC-20 Token Gas,” activate an account, confirm a transaction, fix a buyer’s error, or send money to unlock a sale as a scam warning.

OpenSea says it will not send unsolicited social-media DMs, ask you to send funds to OpenSea, or require an intermediary, developer, or “deal agent” to complete a sale. It also will not ask you to scan a QR code to resolve an error or enable a sale.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use this safety procedure:

  1. Ignore links and QR codes in unsolicited messages.
  2. Open the marketplace by typing opensea.io yourself or using a trusted bookmark.
  3. Check the item and transaction status in your wallet and the official marketplace account.
  4. Never disclose your seed phrase or private key.
  5. Reject any wallet prompt whose destination, permissions, or amount you do not understand.

Be especially suspicious of search-result domains that imitate OpenSea. OpenSea identifies opensea.io as its official domain; a site claiming to be OpenSea at another URL is not the official site. OpenSea also states that it does not send transaction-failure emails, so do not use such an email as proof that a sale failed or requires payment.

Pre-mint checklist

  1. Choose Create Collection or Drop based on who will mint.
  2. Confirm the collection before minting; items cannot be moved between collections later.
  3. Proofread the contract name and token symbol because they cannot be changed after deployment.
  4. Confirm whether the workflow creates ERC-1155 and set each item’s supply deliberately.
  5. Use one compatible file type throughout an OpenSea Studio collection.
  6. Test the metadata URI, JSON, media link, names, descriptions, and traits.
  7. If using ERC-1155, verify lowercase, 64-character hexadecimal URI substitution.
  8. Decide whether metadata is permanent, updateable, URI-based, or embedded on-chain.
  9. Set creator earnings accurately and explain whether they are optional or enforceable.
  10. Fund the correct wallet and network, leaving room for failed transactions and later edits.
  11. Ignore unsolicited support messages, payment requests, QR codes, and fake domains.

FAQ

Can I move an NFT to another OpenSea collection after minting?

No. OpenSea states that NFTs created in a collection cannot be moved to another collection later. Select and review the collection before minting.

Does OpenSea Studio Create Collection use ERC-721?

OpenSea’s current Studio collection workflow creates ERC-1155 NFTs. The item supply controls the number of copies; a supply of 1 creates one copy of that item.

Are ERC-2981 royalties guaranteed?

No. ERC-2981 standardizes the royaltyInfo() signal but does not enforce payment. Marketplace support and the contract’s enforcement mechanism determine whether earnings are paid.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I get gas back if minting fails?

No. OpenSea states that gas fees are non-refundable even when a transaction fails.

Should I pay a buyer to complete an NFT sale?

No. A legitimate buyer can purchase a listed NFT without the seller sending additional funds. Requests for activation fees, ERC-20 gas, QR-code scans, or payments to fix a buyer’s error are scam indicators.

Can I change my NFT image after minting?

That depends on the contract and metadata design. In OpenSea Studio, saving edits requires a blockchain signature and gas. If metadata changes, the contract should emit the relevant update event so marketplaces can refresh their displays.

The Bottom Line

The safest NFT workflow is deliberate rather than fast: choose the correct minting model, verify the collection and contract identity, test metadata with real token IDs, understand supply and file-format limits, and budget for every blockchain transaction—not just minting. Treat royalties as a marketplace-dependent feature, and never pay an alleged buyer or support agent to unlock a sale.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For implementation details, consult OpenSea’s NFT creation guide, metadata standards, creator-earnings documentation, and gas-fee guidance before deploying or approving a transaction.
