AI is the umbrella, machine learning is one way to build AI, generative AI describes systems that produce content, and an LLM is a language-focused model. The distinctions matter because training, retrieval, prompting, tool use and autonomous action solve different problems. A fluent answer can still be wrong, and a product marketed as an “agent” may only be a chatbot.
Why these distinctions matter
AI vocabulary often collapses several separate questions into one word. To describe a system accurately, ask:
- Scope: Is it an umbrella field, a particular model type or a complete product?
- What was learned: Were parameters learned during broad pre-training, task-specific fine-tuning or neither?
- When computation happens: Did the system learn during training, or is it generating an answer at runtime?
- Outside information: Does it use only its trained parameters, retrieve documents, browse, or call tools?
- Authority to act: Does it return text, or can it plan and change an external system?
Keeping those axes separate prevents common errors such as calling every AI system machine learning, treating retrieval as retraining, or assuming that confident language proves truth or consciousness.
What is the difference between AI and machine learning?
Artificial intelligence is the broad umbrella
Artificial intelligence (AI) is the broad field of building machine-based systems that perform tasks associated with human-defined objectives. In its glossary, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) describes AI as “a machine-based system that can, for a given set of human-defined objectives, make predictions, recommendations, or decisions influencing real or virtual environments.” NIST also lists formulations involving systems that learn from data.

This definition does not require a system to think, feel, understand itself or imitate a person. A fraud detector, route planner, recommendation engine and language model can all be AI even though they have different inputs, methods and outputs.
Machine learning is a subfield and set of techniques
Machine learning (ML) is one way to build AI. Instead of receiving every rule explicitly, an ML system adjusts parameters to learn patterns from data and then uses those patterns to make predictions or decisions. The training method, data and evaluation target determine what the resulting model can do.
AI and ML therefore are not perfect synonyms. Some AI systems can be built with hand-written rules or search rather than machine learning, while ML is used for tasks that may look unlike human intelligence. Saying “this AI uses machine learning” is more precise than saying the terms mean the same thing.

Where does deep learning fit?
Deep learning is a machine-learning approach based on neural networks with multiple layers. The layers transform input representations so the network can learn complex patterns. Deep learning is widely used in language, vision, speech and other modalities, but it is not a synonym for all AI or all ML.
A deep-learning model also need not be generative. A model that classifies an X-ray or detects objects in a video may use deep learning while producing a label or score rather than new content. “Deep” refers to the model architecture and learned representations, not to consciousness, general intelligence or the ability to create.
What is generative AI?
Generative AI (GenAI) describes models or capabilities that generate content from learned patterns and an input prompt. The output can be text, images, audio, video or code. Generation is the defining behavior; it does not imply human-style creativity, awareness or correctness.

Generative AI is a subset of AI and commonly uses deep learning. A text generator, image generator and music generator can all be generative while using different modalities and model designs. An image or audio generator is not automatically an LLM because an LLM is specifically language-focused.

Is ChatGPT generative AI or an LLM?
A chat product can be both: its underlying language model is an LLM, and producing replies is a generative-AI capability. The interface is a product; the model is a component. Describing the product only as “AI” hides whether it generates language, retrieves information, calls tools or performs other work.
An large language model (LLM) is trained to process and generate text. “Large” generally refers to the scale of training and model capacity, but the term does not by itself specify a product’s interface, accuracy, browsing access or autonomy. An LLM can be used for completion, summarization, translation, classification or conversation.
A foundation model is defined by broad pre-training and adaptability rather than by language alone. NIST describes it as models “trained on broad data using self-supervised learning that can be adapted such as through fine-tuning for a variety of downstream tasks.” Foundation models can cover language, vision, audio or multiple modalities. Many LLMs are foundation models, but not every foundation model is an LLM.
What is a prompt, and what is prompt engineering?
Prompt
A prompt is the input supplied to a generative model. It may be a question, instruction, role, example or other conditioning text. The model’s output is the response. A prompt can also include retrieved passages, structured data or tool results supplied by an application.

Google for Developers calls prompt engineering “the art of creating prompts that elicit the desired responses from a large language model.” In practical terms, it changes the input at use time. You can improve a result by stating the task, audience, constraints, output format, examples and acceptance criteria, but prompting does not change the model’s learned parameters.

For example, asking for “a concise incident summary in four bullet points, separating confirmed facts from assumptions” gives a clearer target than “summarize this.” The technique can improve consistency, yet it cannot supply facts the model does not know and cannot guarantee that an answer is true.
Training, pre-training, inference and fine-tuning are different
Training and pre-training
Training is the process of adjusting model parameters using data. Pre-training is the broad initial phase, often using large datasets and self-supervised objectives. It gives a model general patterns and representations before it is adapted to a particular task or product.
Inference
Inference is runtime use of a trained model. Given an input prompt, the model computes a response using its existing parameters. Inference is not new learning in the ordinary sense; a chat session can produce a different answer without permanently retraining the model.
Fine-tuning
Fine-tuning is additional training that starts from a pre-trained model and adds task- or domain-specific information. It changes parameters through more training. Fine-tuning is therefore different from prompt wording and different from retrieving documents at runtime.
| Mechanism | When it happens | What changes | Typical purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-training | Initial development | Model parameters learn broad patterns | Create a general-purpose base model |
| Fine-tuning | Additional training after pre-training | Parameters adapt to task- or domain-specific data | Specialize behavior or format |
| Prompting | At inference time | Input context and instructions | Steer a response without retraining |
| Inference | At runtime | No ordinary parameter update | Generate an output from the trained model |
| Retrieval | Before or during inference | Context supplied to the input | Ground an answer in selected records |
What is RAG, and does it stop hallucinations?
Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) is a retrieval-plus-generation pipeline. After a model has been trained, the application searches documents or records, places relevant excerpts into the model’s input, and asks it to generate an answer grounded in that context. RAG can add newer or private information without changing model parameters and can support citations.
RAG is not a database by itself, and it is not fine-tuning. The system still depends on the retrieval method, document quality, ranking, context limits and the model’s ability to use the supplied evidence.

Why RAG cannot guarantee truth
- If the relevant record is not retrieved, the model may answer without it.
- If a source is outdated, incomplete or wrong, grounding reproduces a bad foundation.
- If several passages conflict, the model may select the wrong one or fail to explain the conflict.
- A model can misread, overgeneralize or invent details even when useful passages are present.
RAG can reduce unsupported answers when retrieval and sources are good, but it does not eliminate hallucinations or replace evaluation and human checking.

In practical AI usage, a hallucination is a generated answer that sounds confident or plausible but is false, unsupported or fabricated. It is a model-output failure, not evidence that the system perceived something or experienced a mental state.
Hallucinations can include invented citations, nonexistent events, incorrect calculations, made-up quotations and details that were not present in a supplied document. Fluency is not proof of reasoning, browsing, consciousness or truth. For important work, verify claims against authoritative records, inspect citations and require the system to distinguish evidence from inference.
Are AI agents autonomous?
An AI agent, or agentic AI system, is organized around a goal and can decide on steps or actions, sometimes by calling tools or operating in an environment. A typical action loop may observe information, choose a next step, invoke a tool, inspect the result and continue until a stop condition is reached.
A chatbot that returns one response without planning, tool calls or an external action loop may be useful AI but is not necessarily agentic. “Agent” is not a reliable marketing grade. Describe the actual properties instead:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Goal: What outcome is the system pursuing?
- Autonomy: Does it choose steps, or does a person approve each one?
- Tool access: Can it search, run code, send messages, edit files or call business APIs?
- Memory: Does it retain task state or user information between steps?
- Stop conditions: What limits loops, spending, permissions and retries?
- Action authority: Can it only recommend an action, or can it execute changes in the real or virtual environment?
These details matter more than whether a vendor labels a feature an agent. Tool permissions, approval gates, logging and recovery procedures determine the practical risk.

Is AGI here yet?
Artificial general intelligence (AGI) is a contested, future-oriented label for broad capability across many tasks. There is no single universally accepted threshold for generality, autonomy, reliability, learning efficiency or physical-world competence.
Do not treat AGI as a synonym for a powerful chatbot. Before making an AGI claim, define the capability standard, test conditions, task range and evidence. The authoritative definitions considered here do not establish that any current system meets a universal AGI standard. A system can be highly capable in selected tasks without satisfying every proposed meaning of “general.”
How bias, fairness, explainability and alignment differ
These terms describe related but distinct properties or goals:
- Bias concerns systematic patterns in data, model behavior or outcomes that can disadvantage groups or distort decisions.
- Fairness concerns whether outcomes and processes meet a chosen standard of equitable treatment. Different fairness definitions can conflict, so the context and metric must be stated.
- Explainability concerns how people can understand, inspect or communicate why a system produced an output. An explanation may describe evidence or model behavior without proving the output is correct.
- Alignment concerns whether system behavior matches intended objectives, instructions, values or constraints.
None of these is interchangeable with accuracy, safety or intelligence. A system can be accurate on an aggregate test yet unfair for a subgroup, explainable yet wrong, or aligned with a narrow instruction while unsafe in a broader setting. NIST’s terminology work emphasizes that these words have context-dependent meanings.
A practical map of the terms
| Term | What it describes | Runtime grounding | Action authority |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI | Broad field of systems making predictions, recommendations or decisions for human-defined objectives | May use none, retrieval or tools | Answer-only through fully automated systems |
| Machine learning | Techniques that learn patterns from data rather than receiving every rule explicitly | Depends on the application | Depends on the application |
| Deep learning | Multi-layer neural-network approach within machine learning | Depends on the application | Depends on the application |
| Generative AI | Models or capabilities that generate text, images, audio, video or code | May generate from parameters alone or use supplied context | Usually answer or content output |
| LLM | Language-focused model trained to process and generate text | None unless an application adds retrieval or tools | Typically response generation |
| Foundation model | Broadly pre-trained, adaptable model usable across downstream tasks | Depends on the deployed application | Depends on the deployed application |
| RAG | Retrieval-plus-generation pipeline that injects selected records into an input | Retrieval provides external context | Usually answer generation; tools can be added separately |
| AI agent | Goal-directed system that selects steps and may call tools in an action loop | Can combine model knowledge, retrieval and tools | Ranges from approval-required recommendations to authorized execution |
How to describe an AI system precisely
- Name the modality: Say whether it handles text, images, audio, video, code or several types.
- Name the model scope: Distinguish a narrow model, an LLM or a broader foundation model.
- State the training stage: Identify whether the system is pre-trained, fine-tuned or simply prompted.
- Explain runtime grounding: Say whether answers use no outside context, retrieved records, browsing or tool results.
- State action authority: Clarify whether it only answers, recommends, requests approval or executes changes.
- Choose the evaluation target: Measure the property that matters—accuracy, factuality, latency, safety or task success—instead of treating “AI quality” as one number.
For example, “a fine-tuned language model with retrieval over our policy documents that drafts answers for human approval” communicates far more than “an autonomous AI.” It tells the reader what was trained, what information is supplied at runtime and who remains responsible for the final action.
The bottom line: use the narrowest accurate term
Use AI for the broad field, ML for systems that learn patterns from data, deep learning for multi-layer neural-network methods, generative AI for content-producing capabilities, and LLM for language-focused models. Treat prompting, fine-tuning and RAG as different mechanisms, and reserve agent for systems with goal-directed steps or actions. Keep AGI claims tied to an explicit definition and evidence. Above all, separate fluent output from verified truth.
