Using a command line is a choice of interface, not a test of personality, intelligence, or technical worth. A terminal can be useful for repeatable work, automation, and connecting tools—but preferring a graphical interface is no less legitimate. To understand what the command line offers, it helps to separate the terminal window, the shell running inside it, and the programs you launch.
What is the difference between a terminal and a shell?
Many people use the terms command shell, command-line tool, and terminal interchangeably, but they describe different layers. Microsoft Learn defines a terminal as an application that provides a text-based window for hosting command shells. The shell is the interactive command interface; a command-line tool is a program you run from that shell.
- Terminal: The application that displays text input and output and hosts a shell. Features such as tabs, panes, and copy-and-paste depend on the terminal application.
- Shell: The program that interprets commands, manages the interactive session, and can start other programs.
- Command-line tool: A standalone program invoked from a shell to perform a task, such as processing files or displaying information.
For example, a terminal window can host a shell, and that shell can run a separate command-line tool. Knowing which layer you mean makes it easier to diagnose whether an issue concerns the window, command interpretation, or the program itself. Microsoft Learn explains the distinction.

Why use a command line if graphical apps exist?
Repeat a task reliably
A command records the steps you asked a tool to perform. When the same operation comes up again, you can reuse or adapt those steps rather than navigating through the same sequence of screens. Commands can also be placed in scripts for tasks that need to run repeatedly.

Connect programs into a workflow
The command line is both a way to interact with programs and a way to compose them. One tool can send output to another, allowing a sequence of smaller operations to handle a larger task. The Command Line Interface Guidelines recommend designing for people while retaining conventions such as standard input and output, exit codes, and line-based text. Those conventions help tools work together and make patterns easier to learn.
That design principle starts with the person using the software: “The user is conversing with your software, whether you intended to or not.” A command-line tool should therefore communicate clearly, not assume that users already know every convention. The Command Line Interface Guidelines discuss human-friendly interactions alongside composability.

Explore and automate
Commands can make it practical to inspect information, try a small operation, and build up a workflow. The same interface can serve an occasional task or a larger automated process; using it does not require adopting a particular identity or making it the center of every workflow.

Command-line conventions are not perfectly consistent. Similar tools may use different options, output formats, or error messages, and shell behavior can differ across environments. A confusing error or an undocumented assumption can turn a short command into a frustrating debugging exercise.

The Open Group’s Single UNIX Specification provides a standards and portability context for terminal mechanics, shell command language, and 174 utilities supported on certified UNIX systems. That figure applies to certified UNIX systems under the specification; it does not mean every shell or modern operating system behaves identically. The Open Group’s online specifications describe the standards.
Compatibility is one design choice among several. Nushell’s project philosophy emphasizes usability, ergonomics, clear errors, and composable commands, while treating strict POSIX compatibility as a non-goal. That is Nushell’s stated approach, not a rule that every shell should follow. A user choosing tools may need to weigh familiar shell scripts and conventions against other usability or data-handling priorities. Nushell documents its design philosophy.

Can people adapt the command line to fit their habits?
Yes. Users can customize how they work, including defining aliases that shorten or modify commands. A 2020 study, An Empirical Investigation of Command-Line Customization, analyzed more than 2.2 million shell alias definitions found on GitHub and grouped observed uses as shortcuts, modifications, and scripts. This shows examples of customization in that corpus; it does not establish what share of all users customize their shells. The study’s publication page describes the work.

How should you decide whether to use a command line?
Start with the task, not with what a tool seems to say about its user. A graphical interface may be clearer for a visual or one-off operation. A command line may suit work that benefits from repeatable instructions, connecting programs, or scripting. Many people use both.
- Use the interface that makes the current task understandable and manageable.
- If commands are unfamiliar, begin with a narrow task and consult documentation for the shell and tool you are using.
- When choosing a tool, consider how well it explains errors, documents its conventions, handles data, and works with the scripts or programs you already rely on.
- Do not treat comfort with a terminal—or discomfort with one—as a measure of intelligence, competence, or professional potential.
The command line is an interface with useful conventions and real trade-offs. Its value lies in the work it enables, not in the status someone attaches to using it.
